Sending Progress Report to Colleges

I just found out that DS’s High School will be sending progress report grades to the colleges he is applying to - a senior snapshot. DD went through the application process 3 years ago (different school), and these were NOT sent. Is this normal? Do the colleges really want or need to see them (as the school has implied)? I am a little concerned that this snapshot won’t help him at all - he has 3 B+ (AP Calc AB, AP MicroEconomics, Film Seminar), A- (Engineering) and A+ (AP Psychology). He is not applying to any top 50 schools. It just seems so unfair to send them when kids have been knee deep in applications as well as school work, and his grades always pick up towards the end of the semester. Am I worrying about nothing?

No

Some colleges require Q1 updates. Some colleges request Q1 updates from some applicants. But these are formal updates after the quarter has officially closed. I’m unaware of any college that suggests an informal update with a screenshot of the online gradebook. And let’s be real - if the teachers don’t have a deadline as they do for submitting formal grades, the online gradebook is rarely up-to-date.

Our HS only sends semester transcripts after the initial one that is submitted with the application.

Ok - that confirms my thoughts then. I emailed his counselor, and they insist on sending them, as this is their policy. Do you think his B+'s will hurt him, or are the colleges likely to ignore the progress report?

One B+. God no.

Too much pressure. Don’t do that to the student.

Who knows if they’ll even look - they didn’t request and it’s not a final grade.

If a B+ gets someone rejected, be glad they said no - it’s not the right school anyway.

I agree with @tsbna44

3 B+'s, 1 A-, 1 A+

I have obviously not expressed any of this to my kid. I told him that it was his best progress report yet - which it is!! His grades usually pick up at the end of the semester.

It seems so dumb to send these out to the colleges - I hope they ignore them.
