when i applied ed, i didnt ask for financial aid, because at the time i didnt need it. however, since i was accepted early december, my family’s financial situation has changed, and we really need some FA. is there a point in sending in a css profile at this point (the fa office said we could send one in now…but has anyone ever heard of a person who sent in the css profile late STILL getting any money)? do i have any options??? ):

ogosh :l

are you an international student (for CU this means not american, canadian, mexican or us perm resident)?

if so then you can’t apply now that you’ve been admitted. you were admitted on the condition you believed you would not require aid.

otherwise! yes. you can always change your mind to see if you need aid. so send in the css profile now and other supporting documents; if you feel more comfortable call up finaid just to let them know you will be doing so. in any case all the students who applied early, none of them received a financial aid package, only an estimate. all students don’t get a package until the spring, when they can send in their 2010 taxes.

phew =P im from california.
all right thank you! i’ll send in my profile and hope for the best.

wait a sec
I found this on the facebook columbia undergrad admissions group site:

Columbia University Undergraduate Admissions
Hi Brenda:

Regular Decision applicants may take standardized tests as late as the January test sittings, so January 22 scores would reach us in time.

All admitted students, including international and foreign students, are granted financial …aid based upon the same principles:

Financial aid at Columbia is need-based. There are no academic, athletic or talent or otherwise merit-based institutional scholarships.

Columbia meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need for ALL students, including foreign students. And we continue to meet 100% of your demonstrated financial need for all four years of study.

Best,
Hamilton Hall

smh…

^ i guess that refers to international students who were admitted through the more competitive applicant pool of international students who ALSO seek financial aid. the people who were admitted under the need-aware admissions despite seeking FA, these people are guaranteed FULL need-based aid.

collegeftw - i am very aware of columbia’s FA policies and FA policies in general. if you are an international student admitted a a need aware candidate you can try and apply, but likelihood is that they would not accept your FA application.

this is standard practice across universities, especially those that are not fully need-blind for all students, but even some universities that are need-blind for domestic students will state that unless you apply as a freshman you are not entitled to apply later on if situations change. columbia, for example, for its domestic students is not as rigid.

i mean i think this seems entirely logical. if the goal of being need-sensitive for international students is to be able to predict how much money you need allocated for international financial aid, allowing students to alter their decision mid course would ruin that opportunity. applicants ultimately have other options (full need-blind schools, merit schools, home country scholarships that would allow them to attend Columbia) they could consider.
