Senior Year Schedule & Intro (w/updates)

Oh, I have a follow up!! I didn’t realize you updated your post.
I have an Exit Summary Meeting tmrw about my College Accommodations/Disability/Documentation so I’ll have to ask on those.

Yeah, but I just honestly dislike missing school…(I have 1 absence because of NYU Albany Day, and have left school early 2x but for NYU’s Info Session/Interview)

Is this person the one on my application (there’s a person & a Bitmoji there)

It’s four years of your life, you aren’t skipping school to go shopping with a cousin who is in town! You really, really, really need to experience the campus, the dining hall, the neighborhood around the campus, etc.

Academics are remarkably similar no matter where you go. It’s not as though Buffalo has a secret organic chemistry class that Scranton doesn’t know about.

Please give some thought to visiting-- a real, looking around, wandering, poking, asking hard questions visit. Missing one, two or three day of HS to validate your choice is a very solid investment. Plus- understanding what it takes to get there and back-- also important. My H went to a college which involved two different Greyhound buses-- and a very long layover at a pretty scuzzy bus station. In his case, there was no choice- it was the cheapest and best option, and parents couldn’t take a day off from work to drive him. But if you plan to come home occasionally, practicing what’s involved is probably a good thing to do.

Yeah, it took me a while to find the LLC and housing links…

You wouldn’t be skipping and high schools authorize this for a good reason: it matters.
You’re choosing the college where, if all goes well, you’re going to spend the next 4-5 (* ) years. High school is almost over nwd you need to make sure you truly like SUNY :bison: better than UScranton AND whether you can see yourself there. A university can feel very different in person and on paper - not in a bad way, but because being there will help you project and know what the best choice is. It’s important to go.

Btw I would visit UScranton too.

Okay before I take time to reply to both blossom & MYOS, I have a question that I’ll pin to this reply…sorry in advance…I could’ve made a separate thread, oh well.

:round_pushpin: LIV’S QUESTION OF THE HOUR!!
Tomorrow is my Exit Summary Meeting (more on that here: Student Exit Summary | New York State Education Department) and I have to decide what accommodations I want to go with me to college. However, I don’t really know…for context I know I’ve said it before but I have a speech or language impairment, I don’t know how that gets accommodated in college, so if anyone can help (by asking guiding questions or something??)–I appreciate it!

Alright, onto the real replying now:

This made me laugh. I was in class (we had a sub though) and a big smile was plastered on my face. But yeah- no I wouldn’t skip school for that.

I don’t wanna travel up to Buffalo (sobs in seven hours driving), but the only way I’d do it is to go to the airport. I’m confident in my airport skills (…because, well, I’m quite fond of plane spotting/airlines/airplanes, etc) and plus it’s only 50 mins! And, even another Plus, one of Liv’s Favorite Airlines flies to Buffalo from LGA (Laguardia) AND JFK (John F. Kennedy)!! Talk about convenience!! (Or apparently I could take the greyhound I think, which would make me a Miles in Transit girly!)…please forgive me I watch too many travel videos.

I have this feeling that all my questions are dumb and I can’t get OUT of my head thinking this. But, I could try…? I guess. I’ll see.

True, true. Thank you for the antecedent perspective…I needed an example in my head to illustrate it and I can somewhat picture it now. Thank you!!!

I agree! Thank you :}

Interesting…I thought those links are commonly/easily accessible.

This is a nice TL;DR of Blossom’s post and I’m here for it.

:snowflake: Fun little aside: Since I’m super obsessed with Frozen, I had this thought last night that I should engineer Elsa’s ice castle one day. Ha!

There are no dumb questions when it’s your life for four years.

I’m so sorry because I know you really really really liked them.
Time to plan your visits to UScranton and SUNY Buffalo!

well…not all hope is lost. they said I applied to ONLY tandon, which is not true at all-
but i’m not going into full fledged details yet

most likely committing to Buffalo, i’m not looking into Scranton at all bc the SEAS direct admit > Scranton neuroscience major…

I’m attending UB’s admitted students day in April; visiting the area for 2 days, flying there (7h in a car is brutal).

If UB’s the right school for you, then that’s great. It’s a wonderful school with a terrific engineering program.

I do recommend that you at least reach out to Scranton about the major. In browsing through their website, I didn’t see anything about not being able to switch majors into engineering or having criteria to exclude kids. Here’s the info from Scranton:

How do I change my major or add a minor?

  • Speak first to your academic advisor if you are considering a change of major or minor.
  • Speak to faculty members in other areas of interest to collect more information about another Major or Minor. Sometimes due to the demands of a Major, it is not advisable to add a minor.
  • Visit Career Services and make an appointment to speak with a counselor. This office can assist with career options through individual counseling and workshops.
  • Once a final decision has been made, make an appointment with your Academic Advisor and work with him/her to complete a Change of Curriculum form. Be sure to sign the form and get any additional signatures from Chairpersons and the Dean that houses the new major. (source)

Additionally, nowhere on the departmental page do I see any barriers to having this as a major:

I will note that Scranton is only ABET-accredited for electrical and computer engineering, although they do offer other engineering majors (like Mechanical and engineering management).

So I’m not trying to push Scranton, but I want to make sure you’re making decisions on sound information.

100% this. :grinning_face::grinning_face:

Email UScranton and say you’ve been admitted to Neuroscience but in the meantime decided you’d rather major in Engineering, is your admission still valid, what’s the process to declare an Engineering major, can they put you in touch with current students majoring in Engineering, and with current students using Disability Services? BTW email the same thing to SUNY Buffalo.

Visiting both, taking both into account, filling out a spreadsheet with your own criteria for both, will make it a real decision - if only by contrasting how much better SUNY Buffalo Is for you compared to UScranton.

I’m pretty interested in mechE; which even though I’m direct admit to UB as an engineering major, I think the declaration of that major allows me to freely choose which one I want to pursue. Plus, ABET accreditation looks better than a non- ABET-accredited program.

Screenshot edited out by moderator as it included personal information.

But that’s a lot of work when i have my heart set on one school! Plus, UB is cheaper than Scranton ($34.7k/yr vs. $40.7k/yr[after grants/scholarships])

OH MY GOD SORRY @dramamama2021 I literally didn’t even notice because I was in class replying to this :open_mouth:
Moral of the story: don’t reply to threads while in class. just don’t.

So, I’m torn- should I apply to places w/rolling admissions or keep Buff? I’m curious on some input.

First, you need to visit both places that admitted you.
That’s a priority.
Meaning today you schedule the days with your counselor&parents, have your parents clear that with your school.
You need to complete these visits ASAP.

If visiting UScranton confirms your impression it’s not for you, off you go to SUNY Buff :bison:
where either

  1. it’s what you thought it’d be and you’re done, congratulations, you made an evidence-based choice and can deposit
    or
  2. you’re not so sure, at which point you would apply to a couple more universities after making a deposit at SUNY :bison: just in case.

fun update: I will be visiting UB during the Accepted Students Day on April 26th. My parents have purchased plane tickets, I have already registered, and we are looking for a good hotel.

Since I have school days to burn, as indicated from my 1 absence & 3 early dismissals, I will be checking out UB and the greater Buffalo area from April 24-27! I am super excited :)!!! :blue_heart: :white_heart: :bison: :water_buffalo:

Hey!! Another good update!!
Hunter accepted me (not sure how many days ago lol) but I got an email stating “Here’s your FinAid package” and I was confused why I got a FinAid package prior to even being offered admission. So, logged into CUNYfirst and it says:

:tada:Congratulations :tada:

Are you going to go visit?
Not because you plan to go but because it’ll establish a basis for what to look for when you visit SUNY Buffalo.
