***September 2016 ACT Discussion Thread***

So I got my writing score back and it was super far off from all my other scores. Not that I am going to be the next John Grisham, but I am a decent writer so I am curious what happened. What will colleges think when they see all high scores but a low writing score? HELP!

Which colleges? Check and see if they require ACT with Writing as many don’t look at it.

Still no writing score :frowning:

It’s a delay like last year cuz of the amount of seniors taking it.

Still no scores, and now at the top of my log in page it says “Stand by for October 2016” and under the September 2016 heading it says “make a change to registration.” Does anyone know what this means? Should I be concerned?

@marlorea Sorry i don’t know what it means. No score here either, but mine still says Registered. very, very weird…and beginning to get concerned. I called ACT twice and they say its all fine. Maybe you can call and ask them if you haven’t done that already.

How were the curves for the September ACT? I also haven’t gotten my scores in…

@snowfairy137
Are you serious? A 36 with a writing score 6 and above will be enough for any school in the world. Work on your essays and focus on what you actually like to do instead of worrying about your score. I personally got 34 Composite 9/12 writing.

I got my ACT score back a few weeks ago. Any idea when I should receive my writing score?

@Kramer1 sorry to hear you are still waiting on them. I do not know the answer but you might call ACT monday to ask.

For those who might be reading this for future test info…while it took until Friday for us to receive the MC scores…we also received the writing with them.

So … perhaps waiting on the MC gets you the whole thing at once? No idea…but just a thought to consider.

We are officially done with testing here and could not be happier with the final results. Wishing you all the best as you work on the applications! May everyone get what they desire!

Goodness. My D got a 34 English and 32 Reading but her writing score was only 7. It brought her ELA score down to a 29. Is this something to worry about? I don’t want to pay for a re-score. I think she had a bad reader though. Is the writing score important?

@GMKoon

Son received a very similar score. Like a lazy robot scored it. I can’t believe I paid for this. Abomination.

Yes, My D got 7: 7,7,7,7. It’s very hard to believe she got exactly the same score on every criteria they are looking at. I wasn’t expecting a 12 but this is certainly off. “Lazy robot” is the perfect description for my feelings too!

Scores like 8, 8, 8, 8 and 7, 7, 7, 7 totally reflect lazy readers.

These guys could at least try to hide their laziness by mixing up the numbers a bit: 7, 5, 8, 7.

@redpoodles, re-score isn’t even offered anymore. All they will do is check that the essay was scanned properly and verify that it was read by two readers (oh, and take $40 from you). I share in your frustration with the “lazy robot” scores. My S is not the best writer, but he’s a good writer with a rich vocabulary. If they want to score him lower for Ideas & Analysis and Development & Support that’s one thing, but I would expect a higher score in Language Use & Conventions since he consistently gets 36 for his English score. I doubt if they could point out an error in his spelling, grammar, usage, or mechanics. I wonder what score these essay readers would get themselves on the English section of the ACT.

I should try to be more fair with my “lazy robot” assessment without any real information.

A better description is probably “sweatshop conveyor belt workers” (think Lucy and Ethel) trying to keep up with their quota as the essays continue to roll through. This isn’t fair to anyone, frankly.

By the way, that conveyor belt is running full speed as I write this as many kids are still waiting.

And I still want my money back! :smiley:

I walked out confident that I wrote an excellent essay. I’m shocked I didn’t even exceed an 8 on a single criteria.

@ObitoSigma I’m sure you did write an excellent essay. In my opinion, the graders didn’t read it, they skim it with a checklist at their side. I wouldn’t worry too much about your 8.

@ObitoSigma Same… I got the same scores too…

I looked at their rubric (http://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/documents/Writing-Test-Scoring-Rubric.pdf), which is a mouthful, to reassure myself, although we all know the above posters gave a fair assessment of how ACT essays are graded.
