***September 2016 ACT Discussion Thread***

America: We take your money, and we don’t care about you afterwards.

8-8-8-8 here too. So with my 33 english and 34 reading, I have a 30 ELA score. lol.

got 8 on act writing with 8-8-8-8 like everyone else. is that low?

@bingington I got a score of 11 on all of my sections so I believe that it is out of 12!

This is how I understand it to be. Two readers grade it on scale 1-12. So 11s would mean one grader gave a 6 and the other a 5. If you got 9s which means one grader gave 4 and other 5. If you got 10s - both gave 5s. Understanding this is subjective…so someone could consider a 9 to be a 10 and an 11 to be a 12 since one person graded it higher. Get it?

Writing section only matters to some schools - so look to see if they even require it. If they do, I still do not think it weighs heavily in the overall score. But, ask your college guidance counselors.

Anyone get their MC scores this morning yet? Yes…some of us are still waiting for those results unfortunately :((

I am still waiting as well :frowning:

Still waiting. My print ticket button is gone tho’. Not sure if that means something is getting processed. Still listed as registered. Ugh!!

The ACT Writing scale was revised for ‘transparency’, but it’s worth remembering that the ELA score, on a scale of 36, is calculated using the average of English, Reading, and Writing scores, all scores that MUST be on a scale of 36. That means ACT still converts Writing scores from a 12 point scale to a 36 point scale for the purpose of determining the ELA score.

Same story for my child. English-36 and essay-8

I’ve been following this thread for awhile and just had to comment. Same, same, same for my child. 36 Composite (36E and 36R along with a 34M, 36S) and then an 8 Writing (with an 8/8/8/8). Who knows…maybe she deserved it. But she felt good about the Writing (along with the test). And on top of that - 8/8/8/8?? ALL 8s. Not one thing varied?! Very frustrating. Don’t get me wrong - still thrilled about the 36. But can’t help being a little annoyed about the Writing.

@moncomom You should be annoyed. It seems like we may have exposed something here in this thread. Its all just too coincidental. I’m not upset about the 8, its the all four 8s that really burn me.

I agree. All just too coincidental. We are a small sampling, but still.

I’ll chime in, for the record.
D got 36E, 34R.
Essay 9/9/9/9
She felt REALLY good about her essay, too.

Same here i got 35 comp(36M, 35E, 34S, 33R) and 6/6/6/6 on my essay

@evanb3075 So you are 99.9% percentile on the composite, but below 50% percentile on the essay? That is something that definitely needs to be investigated. Unfortunately, your options are limited.

@STEM2017 what can I do?

@evanb3075 You can request a re-score, but its probably not worth the effort. You pay $40 and they take another look. But from what I’ve read, they don’t really give it the attention that you think they will.

The good news is that your score can only go up. They will never lower your score. And if it does go up, they will refund your $40.

More anecdotal evidence. D got a 36C - 36E, 36R - straight 8’s on the essay.

I started a thread on this topic…

I got 32 Composite, 10/10/10/10 for the essay. Does it prove that the scorers were being lazy? No. there’s a good chance that your sons/daughters scored what they deserved for that essay. Taking their word that they felt great about the writing does not entitle you to receive a higher score. It’s what the prompt asks for, and it’s how well they actually responded to the prompt. I could have written an exemplary essay and felt great, but still miss some central components that the scoring guidelines look for. Stop wasting your breath being upset over the essay. It is writing, not other tangible subjects like Math, Reading, Science, etc. If you’re strung up over the essay, then see if your sons/daughters want to retake the test and focus on the essay more. There’s no use pointing blame at the test administrators or the scorers.
