Serious Scheduling Problem

So, I was checking through SIS today and I’ve been waiting for this poetry class to open up ever since I saw it and now it has. The problem is is that it conflicts with one of my classes, which happens to be an optional discussion section for chemistry. The thing is, I can go to either discussion section, but I can’t exactly switch the chem lectures. I really need this poetry class because I’m doing research now, which means that there has to be a large portion of time which I can dedicate research to and poetry is a class that is held only once a week and is perfect, and I am an Echols Scholar so I have to have at least 15 credits. Does anyone know what I can do in this situation? Should I contact my Echols Scholar Dean to see if he has any recommendations? Will a course action form work?

I don’t think you are required to take 15 credits per semester as an Echols…you should check on that.

http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/echols/faq/index.html:</a> “Echols Scholars are expected to carry 15 credits per semester.” Also, I must have at least 15 credits that are graded in order to be on the Dean’s list, which poses a problem.

Orchidork…I might be wrong, but I believe Echols scholars are expected to carry 15 hours/semester, but I don’t think they’re required; if so, my D might be in the same situation as you this semester unless they consider her current J-Term class as part of this semester. She will be taking very hard science classes and labs for a total of 14 hours this semester. I can’t imagine the school wanting her to find a one hour class to fulfill a 15 hour minimum especially when she already has 100 hours going into her second semester second year. I could be wrong, though. Please post when you find the answer.

I don’t believe that we, as Echols Scholars, are required to carry 15 credits although most of us do.

Also, I’m confused as to if there is another chemistry discussion that does not conflict the poetry class or not.

Well, with completing research, I’ll be taking a total of 17 credits, but the thing is, research is a credit/no credit class 3 credit class. I’m not sure if that counts as legitimate credits because it has seemed to me in the past that CLAS takes into consideration only graded courses (as listed by the requirements for Dean’s List).

10iswarrior, I cannot be in the 9-9:50 lecture for Chemistry, but I can be in its discussion section, whereas I can be in the 12-12:50 lecture for Chemistry, but I cannot be in its discussion section. I just need the discussion sections to be switched in order for my poetry class to fit in my schedule. And the professors for both the chem lectures have made it clear that we can go to either optional discussion sections if we need to, but SIS obviously will not take that into account. I’m not sure what to do…

Is the problem that you need someone to override the computer system so you can enroll? If the chem profs are ok with you switching discussions, I’d talk to my advisor and the registrar.

Both D and S had some classes in other colleges where they had to override the system.

Thank you very much, parentoftwo. Yes, the problem is that I need to override the computer system. I have already emailed the dean of Echols scholars. How would I be able to get in touch with the registrar?

Just fill out a course action form, there is a box for conflicting times as far as I remember. You have both professors (your chem one, and your poetry one) sign it and it’s not a problem. Course action forms solve everything. I had to course action into almost every class I took my last semester. I even had to have my dean override the registrar for me after the course action form didn’t work. Your dean can do magical things. Best of luck.

I have no idea for your school, but this contact info was on the SIS page:

“Help Desk
•By phone: 434-924-HELP (4357) - select option 3
•By email: 4HELP@virginia.edu”

After you register for the poetry class, the cc community will expect your next post to be in verse!

Have a great semester!

Once you fill out the course action forms, bring it to your school’s office (you’re probably CLAS, so that’s in Monroe Hall) and they’ll process it. Print them out from here and bring them in: [Course Action Form: University Registrar at the University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/registrar/courseactionform.html)
