Setting Up An Old iPad For A New User

My old iPad, want to set it up for my 85 year old mom (who has very little computer/tech knowledge) to do a few simple things on.

I was going to reset it but I don’t really know that I need to do that. I will probably just load a few apps/games for her to use on it. So delete my apps on it, add in hers using my Apple account.

I think I’ll need to unlink it to my other Apple devices. Not sure how to do that but can probably Google it.

Do you think this is satisfactory over doing a reset???

If she uses your Apple ID, things can get messy - we shared one ID as a family for a while and contacts were always getting shared by accident. I still have pictures from my son’s ph9ne on my iPad! If you create her own ID and she logs in with it that will solve most of the issues.

I would do a reset. It would be easier, safer, and cleaner. You don’t want someone accidentally have access to your accounts.
My brother gave me his old iPad and I did a reset.

Mom has the capability to “tap” and open an app and to scroll with her fingers but signing in to an account is going to not work with her. She has no email.

I can at least set her up with an email and Apple account if I reset and then just leave that info so that if I’m at her house or my brother or whoever in the family, they can get in and change/add/fix anything for her.

Reset just sounds so severe! It’s a REALLY old iPad. Like the second version to come out. But works fine and I would just like to load a few simple games on it (she likes to play the casino games), maybe get her Facebook to see family photos. I had previously bought her an Amazon Fire and she enjoyed it for awhile but would often get confused on what to do on that and it wasn’t very “touch” friendly - not as responsive as an iPad.

Set her up with an email that you have access and password to; if you start her on FB, she will need an email anyway. While my mother still uses her AOL email address for emailing, I set up a gmail for her and this is used for her Apple ID. I have all her login and passwords for when she has trouble. She uses the iPad mostly for games and looking at the grandchildren’s photo which are on a shared google drive.

I’d be concerned about her using your account directly. A tech-challenged senior citizen can accidentally run up bills with in-game purchases which would hit your credit card. There’s also the risk of your account becoming compromised if the iPad is stolen/lost, as I’m assuming you’re not going to put a password lock on it. I also don’t believe you can unlink an individual device if it’s on your account - that is, if you remove it from “find my iPhone” then I think it deletes your account from the device and resets it.

As you mentioned, the best bet is to just set her up with a basic account and save the info somewhere in case she loses the password. If she needs to make purchases, maybe you can put $50 on a prepaid Visa or something similar, and use that for her account.

I did look and you can set up an Apple account and choose to NOT link a credit card/payment method to it.

Both of my girls and I use itunes gift cards on our accounts for any purchases.

Does the old iPad still get security updates for its operating system?

^^^ I think so! I don’t use it much!

Listen to snowball.

I run our MobileDeviceManagement system at work so we don’t have to deal with these issues. Before we purchased MDM, we did what snowball recommended for a few executives. That works fine for under 5 devices but gets real messy quickly.

As ucbalumnus said, make sure you are getting updates.

I’ve got some old ipads /iphones in my cabinet at work that are painfully slow and I keep them around for when someone breaks/loses their phone and needs a quick replacement. Once they can’t get security updates, they get wiped and recycled, by policy.

Unless your ipad is only a few years old, think about buying a new cheap ipad (~$329). It will make the experience much better for her. I picked one up last year for $250 on black friday for mrs. nokilli and I use her 4 year old hand me down for reading the NY Times and streaming TV so speed is not critical on their apps.
