I LOVED Anna Karenina (far more than Lincoln). It had some problems - Keira Knightley was far too young for the part, and lacked the emotional depth of, say, a young Ann Bancroft (who would have been perfect.) The guy who played Vronsky was a tool, and really a caricature (but the director said that was intended.). Jude Law was fantastic, the newcomers who played Levin and Kitty very, very good, and sets were beautiful.

I just saw Safety not Guaranteed, and thought it was sweet. Confusing trying to figure out where they actually were though.
And Jack Johnsons character was even more annoying than he is in New Girl.

I just watched Doctor Zhivago, 2002 version by Keira Knightley last night.
I am still not sure whether I like this version more than the 1965 version by Julie Christie and Omar Sharif.

H and I just enjoyed Bernie on Netflix. It came out in 2011 so it’s technically not new. A black comedy based on a bizarre true story. Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey are in it.

I really watched “margin call” on blockbuster @home. Best movie I’ve seen regarding the financial collapse, and reviewers said it portrayed finance very well(which interests me). Has Kevin Spacey, and Demi Moore plays a small part.

I’m watching “White Christmas” right now. So much fun!

I love this movie, although it’s a little creepy watching the 50-year-old Crosby hitting on a 25-year-old Rosemary Clooney.

I can’t believe how thin Vera Ellen’s waist is.

I caught some of Margin Call on cable the other day and liked what I saw. Put it to tape so son and I can watch it while he’s home on break.

We saw The Hobbit in IMAX 3D this morning. Absolutely loved it. The previews were worth the price of admission alone.

What is up with the distribution of Anna Karenina? D2 and I wanted to see it a few weeks ago, but it was only playing in ONE independent theater in our fairly large city. I looked again this week – now it is in about half a dozen theaters (out of maybe 40 total). I hear ads for it on the radio and see some in the paper, and have seen the trailer. What is going on? Are they doing a gradual rollout to allow hype to build, then doing a big release at Christmas or something?

Looking forward to the Hobbit. We are huge LOTR fans… D1 saw it already and we discussed it today. She agreed with reviewers that it starts a bit slow (sort of like the Return of the King ended), but she still loved it (and would go again when she is home with us next week).

Yeah, we had the same problem with Anna Karenina. Had to travel 35 miles each way to see it. And our town is the perfect venue for it, too.

“I like this version more than the 1965 version by Julie Christie and Omar Sharif.”

You mean Geraldine Chaplin and Omar Sharif. ;)

madbean – how’d you get to see Zero Dark Thirty before the official release date? So jealous!

I was combing through the selection on Amazon Prime and chose “We need to talk about Kevin”. I guess I was hoping for some insight into why people do these terrible things. The film didn’t provide the why, but many scenes were very chilling. Tilda Swinton was terrific.

Julie Christie & Omar Sharif & Geraldine Chaplin were in Dr Zhivago.
Jacquline Bisset was in a 1985 version of Anna Karenina with Christopher Reeve.

Saw Zero Dark Thirty yesterday.

Sweet lord have MERCY.

Argo has left, and I really wanted to see it with my son. Hoping for a DVD release before Spring Break.

Hitchcock is in limited release at one theater, so I’m going to try to catch it this weekend with son and husband before it leaves. No doubt the Christmas releases will push it out.

excited to see The Impossible

I just saw Jiro dreams of Sushi, which my youngest recommended.
Hope we get a chance to all see a movie together when we visit the oldest for Christmas.
Im downloading The Hobbit now.
( with Orson Bean)

I saw Life of Pi yesterday and thought the film did the book proper justice. But I’m going to suggest people see it in 2D only. The CGI effects are great, but not always perfect, and the 3D element makes them seem less integrated and often kind of cheesy. There’s no reason for the movie to be in 3D (i can’t think of many movies that are improved by 3D, though Avatar was certainly one); there are more than enough visual delights without it, and not having to wear the glasses is an added benefit.

Saw Hitchcock yesterday and enjoyed it. Hopkins as the TV show era Hitchcock was great. Perkins and Leigh casting was perfect. Biel as Vera Miles, not so much.

Cannot wait to finally watch The Girl from HBO, which son refuses to watch until he sees The Birds, which I will never watch, given that I am an avid birdwatcher and animal lover. I won’t even go see Life of Pi because of this. So, I’m going to go ahead and watch The Girl on my own, without seeing The Birds and hope I can follow it.

Doing late night typing the last few days and watching old movies I’ve taped off of cable, including An Officer and a Gentleman, which I’ve never seen. Surprised at how much I liked it. Being set in Washington State didn’t hurt. Never a big Richard Gere fan, took a lot for me to watch this one, but I really liked the film and can see why it had gotten such acclaim.

We (husband, son, daughter and I) just returned from Jack Reacher. My husband and I read the books and had planned not to see the movie. Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher: no way!

But go we did, and all of us liked the movie (though I’m not sure I should post this on the Noteworthy New Movies thread). Still, not sorry we went, for what it’s worth.

DW had never heard of Reacher and had no Cruise/Reacher issue. I’m a big Lee Child fan and and despite the Cruise issues covered in other threads, I wasn’t going to boycott it. Similar sentiments to yours, and for us there was the extra dimension of “hey, that looks like the Liberty Tube… no that’s Fort Pitt … has to be the 7th St bridge etc.” throughout the movie.
