Just watched “Rear Window.” I’m a big Hitchcock fan and that was definitely one of his best films: suspenseful and Grace Kelly is just gorgeous.

Both Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty are still playing in our local mega cineplex. According to Amazon, Zero Dark Thirty will be released on DVD on March 19. I couldn’t find a release date for Lincoln. Did you pay $22.99 at Target for Argo? It’s only $14.96 with free prime shipping on Amazon.

Just saw Amour and it went straight to the top of my Oscar list (not of course that anyone’s asking me). I’ve seen many of the nominated films this year and this one seemed to me to be in a different class from the rest. DH, however, thought it rather slow.
Also recently saw “I Wish” a Japanese movie about 2 brothers surviving their parents divorce. I thought it was delightful and highly recommend it.

My favorite:
*The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance/I

Rear Window is great. I took a film course way back when with a guy who was Hitchcock scholar. We watched a lot of the more obscure ones. My favorite of the bunch was *Shadow of a Doubt *with Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten.

I’ve never enjoyed Westerns unless they also happen to be among the best Westerns ever made. Whereas I’ll happily watch a bad historical film, screwball comedy, or detective story. But, as far as Westerns go, I do like Stagecoach (the 1939 version), 3 Godfathers, Unforgiven, both versions of 3:10 to Yuma, Silverado, and The Searchers. I don’t know why I don’t think of Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Butch Cassidy, or Cat Ballou as Westerns, but I really like them, too.

Cat Ballou was just on TCM yesterday - it’s still a charmer of a movie. I love Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye as commenters on the action. Lee Marvin was wonderful.

My favorite Hitchcock movie is Vertigo. I could watch it 100 times.

I thoght of a few more.
Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford,
Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman
& McCabe & Mrs. Miller, with Warren Beatty & Julie Christie.

I recently watched Perks of Being a Wallflower and absolutely LOVED it! It’s probably my new favorite :). I liked it enough to read the book that night (which is saying something because I never read lol) and I have to say it was one of my favorite movie adaptations of book ever. I’m probably biased for being so in love with the movie (me and Charlie are SCARILY similar) but even without all that it was good and I’d recommend it :)

I also recently watched Beasts of the Southern Wild and thought it was interesting. The little girl was absolutely amazing, but the rest of the movie’s acting and plot development was a little lack luster. It was interesting though and worth being checked out.

So, if we’re talking about Westerns, my favorite is High Plains Drifter - vintage Clint Eastwood - (sorry if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick - I’ve been away for a while and am not utd on this thread and haven’t read back…my bad.)

Not an American Western but Black Robe is a great movie set in Quebec in its earliest days when Champlain still ran the settlement. A young priest is going out to the “mission” to the Hurons tribe and he ends up being escorted by another Frenchman and an Algonquin family. The way the people are presented and some of what happens is more realistic than in nearly any American Western and not as bleak as some of the late Westerns like Ulzana’s Raid that show the destruction of people.

I really like The Assassination of Jesse James with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. Beautifully shot and acted.
