Share TV series you have discovered and love

^British - I used to love Gypsies, I wonder what happened, the American version was not good at all. I want British “My fat wedding” back.
What I really miss though is my Discovery Health. Oprah has bought the channel which made it the most boring thing, I cannot tolerate her channel for 1 min. I was always vey neutral about Oprah, now I hate her. Discovery Health was my default channel, now I have to have it on “Pawn Stars”, but history was never one of my things,…it just there is nothing else and cannot flip channel because my hands are busy and not clean as I mostly just listen and glance once in a while.

Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Storage Wars, Storage Wars Texas, Hardcore Pawn, for our weekly trash wallow.

Decent TV: Boardwalk Empire, American Horror Story, Breaking Bad, Dexter.

The boys are watching Walking Dead, and H just informed me that there will be a marathon on New Years Eve and New Years Day. I know where we’ll be. They are hoping I will finally get on the bandwagon with them. Sorry, love the soap opera, but cannot take the zombies.

My son and I used to watch TV together when he was in high school, and we had some favorite shows I would videotape and save for us to marathon when he was out of school. Medium was my favorite, and I miss it so, so much. I sobbed and sobbed when it ended. We also loved the Grissom CSI’s, and I never could get into it after Gus left.

My mother in law and I used to love the British detective stories some have mentioned above, like Frost, but there was also Prime Suspect (first exposure to the wonderful Helen Mirren), Morse, and I also enjoyed the Midsomer Murders and one or two others whose name escapes me. Glad to hear they are being rerun.

An all time favorite TV series, which I loved the original, and even fell in love with the revival, was Dark Shadows. In fact, I just got the DVD of the Dark Shadow Revival and am going through it during my chores. I loved Johnny Depp’s movie, but nothing beats the series.

The boys also love Iron Chef and Chopped and Top Chef, and will stay up all night when son home from break watching those.

The best sound I ever hear, though, is their big belly laughs while watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I cannot bear the characters, but nothing makes me happier than hearing my two guys screaming with laughter at this crazy show.

LOL Montegut - you might want to reread your first line…

OMG! Thank you for catching that!

I meant Hardcore Pawn!

Thank goodness for that edit button!

Friend from my book group was recently raving about ‘Homeland’, saying it’s the best TV series she’s ever seen. I have somehow missed it. She urged me to start from the beginning, rather than pick it up now. Any suggestions about how to do that? Is Netflix the only way?

Season 1 of Homeland is available on DVD.

Dr. Who. Really like Matt Smith. I’ll miss the Ponds.

^^^

Doctor Who - Ditto.

Really like Matt Smith. - Ditto

I’ll miss the Ponds. - Ditto

Though I have to add that I also really liked David Tennant as Doctor Who.

I watch and like a goodly handful of shows already mentioned. No one has mentioned Arrow though and should have. Everyone in this family likes it: male, female, young, old.

Darn. I just got lifted out of the “infamous” category just as I was beginning to see myself as a bada…

Davis Tennant was great. I had, and still have, difficulty in distinguishing between Tennant and Smith. I think they look alike. Long sideburns on Tennant that’s the only way I can remember which is which.

BTW, some of the story lines make absolutely no sense but the characters are great.

“Basically, run.”

Pretty much the ONLY thing we watch is “Grimm,” which is a police procedural story set in Seattle with a twist on some fairy tales and more. We both find it fascinating.

^^^Oh, I didn’t know it was set in Seattle. Got to watch it then.

Which brings up a series we loved and have heard it is also cancelled, The Killing.

We really enjoyed that one, and we would watch it at home, and son while in college, and would enjoy analyzing it together over the phone. The nature of the show did not lend itself to TiVo and watch later, as there was too much chance of spoilers.

There are rumors of a possible return of The Killing, Montegut. I have a friend involved with the show in Vancouver (where it’s filmed) and they’re hopeful. We enjoyed it, too.

^^^Hooray!

SUITS on usa network.

The Paradise is a new BBC series that just ended its first season recently (8 episodes) and has already been renewed; it should be showing up on PBS in a few months. Nicely acted Victorian era social-class drama about the employees of the world’s first department store. Should appeal to anyone who likes Downton Abbey.

This thread just slays me.

I am a big fan of British comedies, but was barely able to get through two episodes of “The IT Crowd”. Thought it was only slightly better than its American equivalent “Big Bang Theory”, which isn’t saying much.

The recent British comedies I have enjoyed are: “The Inbetweeners”, “Peep Show”, and the Ricky Gervais vehicles “Life’s Too Short”, “An Idiot Abroad” and “Extras”. IMO, the second season of Extras is almost up there with my favorite British sitcom “Fawlty Towers”.

lol, I know – IT Crowd is kind of crudely produced. I think it’s Richard Ayoade as the Maurice character that captures my heart.

^^^Thanks for The Paradise tip. Will look for that.

Oh, yes, Fawlty Towers. Love, love, love that show.

Finishing watching my Dark Shadows Revival DVD. Now anxious to find some of the originals to see how closely it follows it.

I do not remember all the Josette stuff, and definitely don’t remember Barnabas being as sexy as Ben Cross is, though I was a big Jonathan Frid fan. I’m sure, as a preteen girl, the romance stuff would have been beyond me, as my main focus was the vampires and werewolves back then.

^ I got an “Angelique Doll” one Christmas as a kid. Don’t know where my mom found it. Wish I still had it, probably valuable.

When I have more time I’m going to re-visit DS.
