Sheets update

A while ago, justamom and I had a lively thread here about sheets. Well…I’m reporting back my finds. I bought two sets of percale sheets at target, one 275 count and one 350 count. Then I got a great deal on those wamsutta egyptian cotton sheets from BBB. Sets were about $35 each for a full bed.

I have used and washed and used again all three sets, and they are all fine, but the clear winner is those wamsutta sheets. Full price, they are well over $100 for a full set. But, they are soft, cool, and smooth. Second choice is the 350 count sheets from Target. They are smooth and cool but not AS smooth and cool as the wamsutta ones. The 275 count sheets are adequate but not nearly as soft as the others.

I now have three sets of new sheets which will likely last me well over five years…or longer. I would buy the wamsutta ones again…if they are still making them when I need replacements…again.

Then again…I didn’t try those Costco sheets:)

Thanks for the review, thumper. Sheets are annoying – you don’t know how good they are until you live with them for a while, and by then it’s too late to return them!

I use a wamsutta fitted sheet in the warm months. I don’t recall the thread count but it is one of the higher end …love it ! Alongside my LL Bean flannel in the winter, it is my favorite

Thumper:

The key is not in the name brand, but in the fact that they are Egyptian cotton. I have Pima cotton, which is very similar.

Any brand will have either Egyptian or Pima cotton, so in the future, that is the type of sheet to look for. I agree, I love my Pima cotton sheets and will look again for something similar in the future.

My Target sheets (higher thread count ones) are also Egyptian cotton, but they absolutely do not feel as nice to me as those wamsutta ones. Just my opinion and others may not feel the same way.

Thanks for the reviews. We definitely need new sheets and without trying them ourselves there’s no way to know how they’ll feel after a few washings. I’ll look for Egyptian or Pima cotton and check out what’s available at BBB.

I am still on a quest to find good sheets. I spent a fair amount of money on high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets from Macy’s recently, and actually took them back because they started pilling. I’m covering the Macy’s Hotel collection sheets, but I can’t bring myself to pay close to $150 for sheets. Thanks for the tip.
Can you tell us what the name of the Wamsutta sheet is?

1214mom, I am a broken record. I say the same thing every time a sheet thread comes up. I love the Kirkland Sateen Sheets from Costco. They’re under $100, come with four pillowcases, and are a very smooth high-thread-count (600 maybe?) 100 percent cotton. They are not satiny! It’s just a very smooth cotton, both soft and crisp (if that makes any sense). And of course since they’re from Costco, you can try them and return them if you don’t like them or they don’t wear to your satisfaction.

I personally do not like any sateen sheets I’ve ever slept on. I looked for those Costco sheets, however…but didnt see them before christmas when i bought all these sheets. Hmmm the name? They are Wamsutta, and they are NOT sold in sets. You buy a top sheet, fitted sheet, and pillowcases. Hoping Justamom sees this thread at some point. She has the name. The Target ones I got are Thomas Obrien. Highest thread count Target sells.

Unfortunate Costco doesn’t offer bedding for full size beds. Love Ross but it does take A LOT of hunting.

I checked Costco recently, but I didn’t like the feel of what they had. I did purchase a set from Costco years ago, and they were fine. I’ll have to check again.

In the winter we use a bottom sheet and a duvet. I usually sew the duvet cover from two top sheets. Used Costco sateen stripe sheet set last time. (five years ago, they wore very well).
We got a coupon after buying our Sleep Number bed for $100 off bedding. They are Very proud of their linens ($$$) but with a sale we got the duvet cover in their basic line for like$10 after the coupon. It’s only been a few months but I love the silky softness and cool feel. Unfortunately that silky softness means the comforter slithers down away inside the cover. We have to stand up ad shake it back every two or three nights. (this is not a one person job with king size). So now soft but crisp is what I’m looking for.

These Wamsutta sheets are soft, crisp and cool. I really like them but I’m quite happy they only cost me $35 for the set instead of over $100! I got them on the clearance rack as they had been floor samples. Between the reduced prices and the 20% off coupons, I did great with the price!

I just buy sheets on sale at the Ralph Lauren outlet, and they have all worked out well. There are some crazy-expensive sheets for sale in this country.

Out of complete laziness, I just wash, dry and return the same set of sheets to the bed. No need to fold a set of sheets ever. Eventually I notice that a piece is wearing, and it is time to open a replacement. Pillow cases seem to wear faster so I always buy extra of those. Not a very scientific system, but it works in our house.

Dragonmom–I had a duvet made up and had it backed with silk. What a mistake that was. Silk does not wear and the entire duvet slides off the bed during the night. Fortunately, it is only the summer duvet cover so we do not end up freezing. Had the winter duvet made from upholstery weight fabric. Another not-so-brilliant choice as it requires two hands to shift the thing at all.

While some may find this talk of bedding silly, I have been a sucker ever since I read a sheet ad 25 or 30 years ago with the tag line: “After all, it’s a third of your life”. Of course, this assumes we sleep eight hours/night.

I bought 2 sets of Ralph Lauren sheets years ago during a Macy’s white sale. Not the cheapest, but they are awesome and still in good shape.

CT, how do you wash that upholstery weight one every week?
Maybe we’re talking apples and oranges…we don’t use a top sheet, just a Euro-style sheet-weight duvet cover over the down comforter. (In the summer its a bottom sheet and a cotton blanket.)
Everything gets washed weekly and re-stuffed. Our upholstery “comforter” and pillow shams and 6 throw pillows mostly live on the love seat unless company is coming.
I know, I’m a housekeeping heathen…

Dragon–I used to do as you did, and use a light duvet cover and not use a top sheet, but I changed to using a top sheet and sending the duvet cover out to the dry cleaner. And, yes, husband banished the throw pillows. Four pillows and two shams was his limit.

Quite the undertaking to get the duvet back in its cover. I give you credit for persevering!

I like the t-shirt knit cotton sheets. The first set was from Land’s End and I spent too much on them, I am sure. The set we use now is from BBB.

After years of fighting over bedding (DH pulls all the covers off me, then throws them off because he is hot), I finally revolted. I use a fitted bottom sheet, then two twin flat sheets and two twin electric blankets. Life is good.

Almost forgot about the dual-control, heated mattress pad. Once I realized how excellent that was, I had to buy them for the boys also. Convinced my mother to use one. I keep the upstairs at 60 degrees so it is nice to pre-heat the bed! Can’t sleep with the heater on as it is way too hot.

Heated mattress pad sounds even better.
