Should aspiring directors get a performance degree?

I’m beginning to be interested in pursuing a career in directing. Since it is more artistic than other production jobs, would it be smarter to get a degree in performance instead of production or design/tech?

My son is interested in directing. He has a BFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University. My impression is that most directors start their training in performance programs. They really need to be able to understand the work of actors.

My son says that the best directors are also good, well-trained actors.

Perhaps you should look at programs that have good performance training but also familiarize students with production skills and provide students with opportunities to direct.

Take a look at the curriculum offered by the schools you are interested in. My D’s Acting BFA has several directing classes, assistant director assignments for upperclassmen, plus the opportunity to direct a senior project, for example. Some schools she looked provided very little directing experience. You can usually get a really good idea of the 4-year layout of available classes, productions and projects for any school you look at.

I would identify some real-world directors who are currently doing the sort of work you want to be doing in the future. Then find out what they did to get where they are. What sort of degree, etc. You may be surprised.

But also be aware that there are now more and more undergraduate theatre programs specifically in “directing” or offering an emphasis or concentration in directing.
