So Im an international student on my leave of absence right now. I attended only one year at USC because I couldnt pay for my tuition. I mean, 60k is too much.
I am waiting for the green card to get approved, and if I become lucky then I will be getting a green card next year. But I cannot guarantee that.
Do you think it is better to drop out and apply to a community college and return to usc after I get my green card? Or should I just take another year of leave of absence and apply to Ivy leagues that give financial aid to international students (although I know I have a low chance of getting in)? I don’t want to waste time for two years doing nothing, but it looks like if I dont drop out, then I’ll have to take a two-year break.
I’m just hopping that if I get a green card then I’ll be eligible for generous financial aid.
Someone plzzzz give me some good advice… I really have no idea what to do.
Even if you get your green card, there is no guarantee that you will get FAid --at USC or anywhere. Sorry. When you choose a U, you have to think of funding for all the years through getting a degree. Very few Us will provide such funding and taking out huge loans is NOT a good choice. Time to rethink your plans and work things out with your family.
There is very little FA for transfer students - even at the Ivies. Speak with a FA person at USC to explore your options at your current school. If it looks like they won’t grant you more aid - with or witout a green card – I would recommend continuing at the community college, then a transfer to a cheaper state university. Lucky for you, being in California, there are many good options.
He sounds like a really diligent student, considering he got into USC as an international student.
I’m sure America has programs or opportunities for hard-working students with financial difficulties such as him, not restricting mires such as community colleges.
You’re “sure” America has programs for students with financial difficulties? Maybe American students (and even that’s arguable.) Not international students, sorry. And millions of Americans study in community colleges for no other reason than their inability to pay for schools such as USC, so that’s kind of a silly comment to make, lol.
He is just an American prospective college freshmen, so no wonder he is oblivious, lol.
Anyway…if you can’t afford, go to CC. If your green card comes out, apply for transfer to which will give you financial aid. International transfer students can get little to no FA/scholarships, but domestic students definitely can.
However, you should have done researches about USC FA policies in first place…
USC accepts many transfers from California CCs, so if you leave in good standing (preferably with a good GPA), attend a CC for 1 or 2 semesters with good grades, and transfer back in once you have a green card and are no longer in the International pool, you should be fine. Of course, apply to several "deep pocket"colleges plus your in-state flagships (UCs? Cal Poly?)
