Dont worry about changing your mind or anything, the only thing you should care about right now is what you think and where you would be happiest, that is it. The place where you think you will be your best self matters most. I would have gotten into Wharton whether I went to Hotchkiss or a public school, now that i am in the ivy league i think choosing a prep school based on that is ridiculous. Ivy league schools pick individuals it is incorrect to assume that correlation is causation. If you are good enough to get in you will, not because other kids from your school got in. But the real value of a prep school is the experience itself, not the school you end up at. Hotchkiss means infinitely more to me than this place does and taught me much more, most importantly it gave me character and taught me the value of humility.

Hotchkiss will make you happiest it seems, from playing in the sand on the beach next to the lake, to being part of our legendary debate team, or helping lead a production. Hotchkiss will change you. Nobody knows who is rich and who is not at Hotchkiss. I mentioned this on my other thread, but I thought one of my friends - who was a descendant of Henry Ford - was a poor farmer boy from Idaho on full financial aid just because he seemed so humble everyone here is like that. It is the Hotchkiss way.

Any school will change you. Kafka is poetic as he is loyal to Hotchkiss.

Can you please answer the question that everyone else who is waitlisted wants to know – are you sure they said you can be off the waitlist and accepted on March 17???

Other 3rd school is Peddie, my parents don’t think it is ‘prestigious’ enough… and for Choate, my mom thinks that they have a big drug issue and she’s worried about sending me there. I’m not sure about how bad the drug issue is, and I personally don’t think it would be a big problem, but it’ll be hard to convince my mom…

“are you sure they said you can be off the waitlist and accepted on March 17???”

I contacted them, and they reviewed my file again, and I got a call from them saying that they would like me to go to Hotchkiss, and they are prepared to take me off the waitlist if I am committed to go to Hotchkiss.

So yeah, right now I am in the process of choosing between Hotchkiss and Lawrenceville.

It seems very very odd and mickey mouse of Hotchkiss to do that when they have know idea what their yield will be given the acceptances that are out there.

I think you should be very careful that you understood that they will definitely give you a place. And every other kid who would go there should get on the phone ASAP.

and yes this is DRAMA. I think she just wants to get in to the one place that didn’t take her. She has 3 acceptances from schools many kids were rejected from, but all of a sudden they are not good enough for her.

“I think she just wants to get in to the one place that didn’t take her. She has 3 acceptances from schools many kids were rejected from, but all of a sudden they are not good enough for her.”

I have to disagree with this statement. First of all, if I really wanted to ‘get into the place I didn’t get accept me’, then why am I still trying to figure about if I want to go to Hotchkiss or not? And when did I say that the other schools are not good enough for me? I love all the other schools! But I can only choose one, so of course I need to narrow it down. Sorry but I really don’t want to argue… this isn’t the ‘I want to go to Hotchkiss because I don’t like the other schools’ thread, I am actually trying to make an important decision about my future here… just trying to make that clear.

**Anyways, does anyone know anything about visual arts programs at these schools? **

I would like to know about some specific stuff, like, what kind of cool projects you’ve done, what special piece of equipment they have, etc, not just the general ‘very strong’, ‘lots of opportunities’ etc. I know I should directly ask the art teachers, but I want to hear from students’ experiences =)

That’s not what I said. I didn’t say you didn’t like the other 3 schools. You shouldn’t be figuring out if you still want to go to hotchkiss, you actually did not get in!

You have THREE acceptances and (at least 1) waitlist. Why are you considering a school that did not accept you originally?

If you did not like the other 3 why apply? Why would Hotchkiss take you off the waitlist NOW? I just don’t buy it. They didn’t even go to the waitlist at all last year.

One person on the phone isn’t going to let you know that unless it was the Director of Admission and I find it hard to believe you could get them on the phone (see other threads where the AO is hardly calling anyone back, plus it is spring break) and they could 'review your file" and say oh sure, we must have wiatlisted you by accident and we will ignore everyone else waitlisted to allow you to move into an accepted slot without having any clue yet as to whether all the kids we actually accepted are coming or not.

Unless you are a TOP athletic recruit this story seems very unbelievable.

And Choate probably has the strongest arts program of the schools but you won’t get comments on peddie or Choate ona thread asking about Hotchkiss and Lawrenceville.

^^bspreppie - there are many types of WL and one of them is a result of a school not wanting to give full admission because they are not exactly sure if a kid goes if accepted and only just wants a guarantee of enrollment check before they take you, so what OP is saying is completely possibly.

Vivsters - even though your mother’s friend may live close to Lville, to my view of your mom gleamed through your posts, she will not be extremely happy with it. I live in NY - very often one hears of another Lville party that went out of hand in NY. Kids come here on a regular basis and very often Lville is empty on weekends. Hotchkiss is certainly not. Also if you just take the conversation on a very basic level – Hotchkiss is the Maybach to Lawrenceville’s Audi. Difference is slight but to those that know, huge. That may convince your mom.
Anyway a choice between top schools is always a nice dilemma, this agida is from a good thing, not bad. Good luck to you in your decision.

Close friends of ours had a son at Hotchkiss who travelled every weekend for some national hockey team, no problem, there are friendly and efficient private taxi services who survive there by driving students to the airport. This is a common request at Hotchkiss. The student did not feel it was a hassle in the least. There are also transport buses to the airport for the holidays, which will be less expensive if you are not on a tight schedule.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’ve just been accepted at Hotchkiss. They told me that they had made an ‘admission error’, and that I should not have been waitlisted. If you still don’t ‘buy it’, then I’m sorry, I can’t give any further information due to certain personal privacy issues on the internet. Feel free to PM me though.

And to answer your question about Peddie and Choate… I have considered those schools, you might want to look at some previous threads that I’ve created. For Peddie, when we visited, we felt like the school could not compare to other campuses like Choate and Hotchkiss. And from the start it was sort of my ‘safety’ option. For Choate… that’s harder to explain, but the main reason (if you read my earlier post) is that my mom is concerned about Choate’s drug issue, that she has heard of.

So, I’ve accepted at Hotchkiss and Lawrenceville, which school should I go to?

I think u sound pretty immature, pretty indecisive (I think I’d feel more comfortable at Lville, I was all set and changed my mind, my mom tells me I can’t do this, she doesn’t want me going away, I might not go this year, now I like Hotchkiss, etc etc etc) and wish you the best.

an admission error? Bull crap. schools check everything before letters go out. but u can believe whatever u want. I’m still not sure why a school like that with that kind of demand would take u in the middle of the acceptance season. u must know someone, u must be a full pay, u must have some great hook.

tell ur mom that hotchkiss and lawrenceville have drug problems too. all high schools do.

Oh and I hope Neato or someone else sees this thread and learns how to work the waitlist

My son goes to Hotchkiss. My brother graduated from Lawrenceville. Both great schools, but I think that THS offers more. It has a greater endowment, more courses per student and more amazing facilities, especially its music and athletic venues. That said, the L’ville housing system is wonderful.

Be humble. You have great opportunities but your posts are causing great distress among families who are still waiting for a spot to open. As an Adcom I can say your attitude in general comes off as immature and unappealing.

Ultimately you’ll have to decide and we’ve already told you what we think based on your own posts.

If you can’t make this decision - and if you’ve called Hotchkiss, gotten a spot, and are now wavering, you really hurt the chances of the other students who are sincerely calling schools because it IS their first choice.

Make the decision - both are good - you can’t go wrong. But based on your attitude, maybe THS isn’t the right place for you after all.

So fine - go to Lawrenceville. Based on my interactions with them I think you’re a good fit.

she got a place at hotchkiss (supposedly) after initially NOT getting one, and she still can’t decide. older posts say her parents think she is not ready to go this year and she still claims she doesn’t know which school to go to. No one is asking her to act like Exie but she could have a little more sense than to act like a spoiled brat who has 3 pairs of nice shoes but really wants the 4th pair too.
