Should i pick up a new instrument.

Next year i will be a junior, and my local public school is going to start a jazz ensemble next year. Is it practical to starting practice saxophone like an hour a day and than perform next spring? I really want to pick up an instrument now, but don’t know if the time is appropriate. Should i learn to play the saxophone in the up coming school year?

Why do you want to start playing now?

i think it all depends on how you feel about playing. why do you want to learn this instrument? why do you want to play music at all? i didn’t grow up in a very musical environment, and didn’t have amazing experiences with them, so i don’t really play an instrument. i don’t have a passion for music as a result. other people naturally play music or have been forced (not quite the right word, but in some cases yes) to learn an instrument. that being said, you have to decide where you stand. music, along with many aspects of life, require passion and dedication. if you can’t see yourself playing the saxophone an hour a day (no strong motivation), you might not succeed (i measure success as a lasting positive, enjoyable experience). one thing that i have realized, and you’ll hear it ALOT on CC: DO NOT DO SOMETHING FOR THE SAKE OF IT LOOKING GOOD ON YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS! i have no sound basis for judgment, but if this is at all part of your thought process, music will not be a fun experience for you. do what you love and most of all explore your interests. if music is not one of them, it is not the end of the world by any means. if it is, however, you have a lot of work to do  i hope this helped!

That’s really a decision for you to make. Don’t be optimistic and expect yourself to be at your best and practice every day. Evaluate your current situation and predict your future based on the number of classes you have along with school activities. Don’t bite off more than you can chew is all I have to say.

You might want to take lessons. I can guarantee that you’ll be very frustrated trying to play sax, it’s not very easy.

Some instruments such as guitar or drums, you can do all the basics learning by yourself. Others such as violin or saxophone, you have to be very technical. Piano is somewhere in the middle (easy to play basics, you need lessons to play some Chopin).
