Should you apply for a major that matches your current EI or one with a lower EI at Fresno

My D wants to go into Pre-Vet at CSU Fresno for Fall 2020 and currently has an EI of about 4000. The EI for “Animal Sciences - Pre-Vet” is 4000 for Fall 2019. A somewhat related major, “Animal Sciences - Basic Animal Science”, currently has a lower EI of 3800. http://www.fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/are/impaction.html

I’m concerned that the EI for both of these majors may increase for Fall 2020, since the EI for Animal Sciences - Pre-Vet increased 200 points between Fall 2018 and Fall 2019.

  • If she lists "Animal Sciences - Pre-Vet" as her 1st choice, and the EI increases above 4000, will they consider her for her 2nd choice, "Animal Sciences - Basic Animal Science" provided that she meets the EI for Fall 2020?
  • If so, does it make more sense to just apply for "Animal Sciences - Basic Animal Science", which currently has a lower EI to assure that she'll at least get accepted to Fresno?

I should also mention that the “Out of Area Minimum Eligibility Index” is higher at 4200 for undeclared majors.

She should expect that changing into a major with a higher eligibility index after enrolling will require another admission process.

EI’s do fluctuate from year to year based on the stats of each incoming Freshman class. Since Fresno state does consider alternate majors, I would have her apply to her 1st choice major and her 2nd choice alternate major. Either major will fulfill the Vet school pre-req’s needed for her to apply.
