Should you put the fact that you're a "rat"?

One of my friends is a Senior and all 4 years of high school he’s gotten more than 30 people expelled for various reasons by way of video/recorded evidence. Most of the people he got expelled people who held parking lot fight matches, cheaters, people who stole/ vandalized school property and your good ol “playground extortionists”. He’s not doing this for glory or anything, he’s a kind, shy person who just wants to make the school better (and he has). Should he put this on his application/essay or should he keep quiet? He has great ECs and GPA aside from this.

EDIT: Of course I don’t consider this guy a “rat” of any kind, he’s told people off because it’s the right thing to do and he’s helping keep the school safe when teachers have their eyes closed

what the hell, how does he do that? Does he creep around with a video camera? Can you give us more context?

Does he know that it’s illegal to record audio without letting the people being recorded aware?

Whoa, creeper alert.
But if I were head of a college, I wouldn’t want that guy within ten miles of my campus. Not only is that illegal, as rhyn0 said, but he’s damaging peoples’ educations because of minor things in comparison. Should you really be expelled for cheating? Is it worth it?
But, to answer your question non-biasedly, unless he can find a nice way to work that into an essay without sounding obsessive and creepy, I’d leave it out. I don’t think it’s filed under extracurriculars…

Weird stuff. Personally, I would not mention that…

Im am very suprised he hasnt been sued. That is a blatant violation of civil rights if he is stalking with that intention of getting students expelled. I wouldnt weant him on my campus.

Haha, the usual “friend did it” story.

But really, no, I wouldn’t put in on YOUR application.

What a perv

As far as I know, video taping/recording audio is perfectly legal on your own property and in public, though it might vary by the state (not entirely sure)…

Also, does this guy snoop around with the express intent to get people expelled, or does he just carry a video camera around in case he witnesses something like what you mentioned (parking lot fights, cheating, etc.)?

If his actions were illegal than I doubt that anyone would have been expelled because the “evidence” would have been inadmissable. Therefore I assume his action are legal. As for the comment about whether a student really should be expelled for cheating, the answer is “yes” if that is the school policies. Any student who cheats is taking a chance that they may get caught and if they are, they should have the appropriate actions taken.

back to OP - personally I would not put it on the application. As you can see from this thread, there are some very passionate negative feelings about this topic. i would not risk bringing it up.

I’m surprised “he”'s still breathing in oxygen without assistance. I truly hope thirty people are an exaggeration. If I was expelled because some snitch decided to play Robocop, I’d be angry. (Actually more than angry… really angry)

Many offenses schools decide to expel people for are uncalled for. Expulsion is the cheapest way to deal with a problem they can’t handle… Expulsion for vandalism? One teenage mistake? It’s really going overboard…

You’re from Arcadia. I know that town… and the school. Pretty top notch eh? I personally hate US suburbia… overpriced food and complacent upper middle class kids with a fake valley girl like attitude…

As such… I’m surprised he’s even considering mentioning this, let alone that he’s still alive, not receiving death threats, and not being harassed to death. (Oh yeah… if he got harassed even a little, then he would expel them eh?)

Personally, I think he is a “rat” and if your school relies on someone like that to throw out students, the administration should personally return the school’s accreditation. For many do gooders, justice is a flimsy cover for the desire to see someone suffer…

'Haha, the usual “friend did it” story.

But really, no, I wouldn’t put in on YOUR application.'

LOLOLOL

I just think thats sad on his part, lol.

Wouldnt even think of mentioning it…to be honest.

Is he going to get pictures of all the underage drinking going on on campus in college too, lol.

so are you going to add this at the end of your app?

“oh, and also, my hobby is getting people expelled, i’m trying to aim for 30+ this year, but we’ll see how the crop is this year.”

Somebody like this would bring nothing but trouble to a college

I’d love to see the interview…

Interviewer: Hi, how are you doing???

Kid: You are currently being recorded by electronic means and by participating in this interview, you agree to being recorded by such devices and waive your rights in the use of said material. You furthermore agree that such material will be presented to the local authorities on suspection of any illegal activities covered under municipal, state, and federal laws.

Interviewer: Um… (runs out the door)

^ HAHAHA
yeah, if you or this friend of your ever wants to get into college, don’t mention it AT all. It just sounds insane/illegal/soooo creepy.

I think most of the people are exaggerating the problem. People who (stupidly) have fighting matches in the school parking lot, thieves and anyone who chronically vandalizes and extortionists SHOULD be expelled from a school district.

I’m sure the people so far would have a far different opinion if your friend had somehow prevented a tragedy. Of course, while it’s not necessarily a bad thing, I wouldn’t exactly put it on an application either.

This is by far the strangest question I’ve ever seen on this website.

But…umm…I’d recommend he avoid this subject unless he did something really heroic, like save another kid from a beating. Otherwise he kinda sounds like Randall from that cartoon I used to watch…Recess.
