Wow…I don’t know how you guys do it. I have read a bit here and there on the weather threads and I just don’t know if I could cope with all that snow. We live in south central Texas and it was 80 on Sunday and 77 on Monday but today it will be a high of 60 ish (which was at midnight and low of 22) Right now it is in the low 30’s and the wind is being a beast. I think snow is really beautiful, but that much seems really overwhelming to me, as I am sure it is to most of you. Stay strong Midwest & Northern peeps!!

We live in WNY. It’s not the snow, really, that’s hard to deal with, but the dreary, gloomy days. Most of the time in late January and February as well as November it is heavily overcast. Myself, I find that depressing. That and I hate being cold, so I don’t personally go outdoors in this weather unless I need to. It’s just scooting to the car and getting it warmed up as quickly as possible (heated seats!
), then slogging in and out of places with muck and slush all over your boots. Ugh!

I’d like to join with collegeshopping and say that I have been paying attention to the weather and thinking about all of you who are getting slammed this week with snow & ice. I’m in NC and we shut down with 3 inches of snow. Stay warm and be safe!

I loathe the heat, so I am happy as can be in the midwest this time of year! I don’t mind the snow, the more the better, as long as the roof doesn’t cave in. In my hometown it’s honestly easier if we get a huge snow rather than a lighter one because it takes several inches of accumulation to get the plows and salt trucks out, they don’t go out for just any snow on the road, so at least with a heavy snow the roads DO get treated.

Thanks collegeshopping and everyone else. We are in New England and have the brunt of the storms. YUCCH. Today & tomorrow are snow days from school, numbers 5 & 6. Looks like my S will be going to school right through the end of June! :(

We are having a bit of cabin fever up here! The snow & ice on the houses is very worrisome. Right now we have several feet of snow on the ground with at least another foot coming down today & tomorrow.

I also heard that the stormy weather pattern is supposed to continue into the Springtime in the form of heavy rain showers, so fun! (Not)

Thanks for all the good wishes. Our school let out early today, no word yet on tomorrow, but I’m not going regardless. It took me more than 2x the norm to get home, and the storm has only really just begun.

D new exactly what she was doing when she decided to leave the Midwest to go to school in SC TX.

I too have been thinking about all of that shoveling! We have a mountain home in the Sierra’s of CA that I shovel out…but if it becomes to much we just head back down the hill to the Bay Area.

I refer to you as hearty souls. Be careful out there!

It is beautiful weather in Northern California this week…but if it makes you feel better, I was awoken by 2 rather strong earthquakes centered under my bedroom a few days ago! And we have 12% unemployment. So know that spring will come!

Thanks for the good thoughts. Here is central OH we’re dealing with ice, with more ice predicted for tonight (could have a total of a half inch), followed by snow and wind. We too are getting near the limit on snow days, but since D (HS’12) lives in the here and now, she loves the days off (complete with 6AM fist pump when the announcement comes) and doesn’t worry about an extended school year ;)

I’m with sylvan8798 - it’s the gloom and gray that gets to me. D wants to go to college where the weather is warm and we just may follow her!

We are in MN, so just got swiped a bit by this storm. I was out at 5:30 am in subzero temps today with the snowblower clearing the plow crud from the base of the driveway before it hardened into a pile of ice. Last time it snowed they plowed our street 3 times – so I had to go clear the crud 3 times in less than 24 hours.

The biggest issue for us is that none of it is melting! We have had about 60 inches of snow, and something like 3 hours over 32 degrees since Dec. 1. No place left to put it in the city. The drifts and plowed piles are spectacular, especially on street corners.

The most dismaying statistic (in D2’s opinion) is that they have not had one snow day from her K-12 school yet this year.

“it’s the gloom and gray that gets to me. D wants to go to college where the weather is warm and we just may follow her!”

we should start a CC poll to see how many of us agree with you…I’ll start: we are right there…

not sure my daughter would be too happy about it though (the following part)…

I am watching a live emergency press conference by the biggies in Chicago. Only 3 international flights are being allowed to land at O’Hare, no flights at Midway, both airports are staying open, but no flights operating likely until tomorrow afternoon, excepte for those I referenced above.

We know what that means!

ETA: CPS closed tomorrow!

S (HS Senior) is actually tired of snow days. Today is #5 which is the last one that can be tacked on to the end of the school year. Tomorrow (no doubt it will be #6) will be made up in May on what was supposed to be a PD day for the teachers…then after that they will take off of April vacation. (Our February break is only Mon/Tues as it is.). And, it’s only ithe beginning of FEBRUARY…

S doesn’t care about April, he’ll be in France anyway (assuming no volcanoes blow this year).

Collegeshopping, thanks for the well-wishes. I will try and live vicariously through you.

We’re ready here in Toronto for this “monster storm”. It’s supposed to hit here around midnight and there are various predictions for the amount of snow. We’ve had a small amount of lake effect bands today but minimal accumulation. Snow days are a rarity here. I was out doing a few errands this afternoon and noticed signs in a few small businesses/stores that they were going to be closed tomorrow. No word yet from the school boards or the universities. I won’t be surprised if they remain open.

California is a big state
So is Florida.

SIL in Chicago is reporting they’ve closed Franklin St. (don’t know where that is, assume in the loop?) because of blown out windows.

We’re in Southern California so no weather issues here, however my son is a freshman in a Pennsylvania school so we have been following the weather reports. I imagine it’s easier for him since he lives on campus and doesn’t have to deal with a commute.

^^Really?! My mom used to work on Franklin (it is in the Loop, by the way).

Snow day tomorrow. Yeah! (It’s our first in many years).

Thanks. Worst blizzard since the 80’s. Whiteout. Big sections of I-70 (in MO) are closed. Tomorrow will be our 5th snow day since the new year.
Why do I live here (KS)? Anchorage has better/warmer weather this time of year.
My mom & sis are stranded in MN trying to get back to OH. . .

I feel really bad for those stranded in an airport…It will be DAYS before the schedules are back on track

I keep wondering about students who had to fly back from Egypt to the U.S. unexpectedly this week, and then press on further into the American heartland today or tomorrow with this weather. Talk about extreme change!

Plus, it really unnerved me to see Al Roker lose balance sideways in the wind, just now on national news, streamed in from Chicago. I count on Al! I just sit here in upstate NY looking due west to see what life will be like tomorrow.

A emailed a late-20’s musician niece who’s never lived through a winter storm in her life, as she grew up around the globe, but now resides in Boston in her own apartment. She was truly appreciative. Simple things, such as making sure she has a battery/flashlight, candles and dry matches, were new ideas for her. I also suggested she print out hardcopies of any computer work she expected to do in the next two days, in case she loses power.
