Got 12+ inches here in Northern Michigan. My H is taking his first snow day in well ever! Snow doesn’t usually slow us down here but they didn’t plow our street yet so we’re not going anywhere. They say we might get 6" more but I doubt it. Unless the lake effect kicks up
His employees got in though, they have trucks!

Missypie…you live “north” of me so Dallas counts too! They are actually saying South Central Texas has a pretty good chance of snow Thursday night. If that happens, we will shut down until it melts. Snow Plow? What’s that…

Year of the Rabbit.

I don’t have a car, so I love the snow! But the wind by the lake last night was scary. I had to stop walking and hold on to a light pole a couple of times! At least the traction was good because the wind had blown the sidewalks clean. Just a couple of blocks inland, the wind was manageable – a normal winter wind rather than a freakish once-a-decade gale.

My whole university has a snow day today! I’m loving watching the storm from my living room. I have a corner apartment on the 21st floor with glass walls, so I have an amazing view of the updrafts and little cyclones that blow around the building.

I could never ever return to IL…can’t stand the cold. Our rolling blackout lasted only about 45 minutes. Painless. Yes, D has been keeping track of the status of her next year’s school. She’s excited!

Ottawa Ontario Canada is doing just fine, a bit slower than normal but not a big deal, we are used to it. The Irony is that my D is in college state side and the college shut down completely today and our schools are all open. At least this storm cant be blamed on us Canadians as it is coming up from Texas of all places. I hope everyone stays safe and warm today. Happy Winter, hey the ground hog did not see his shadow (surprise, surprise) so it is supposed to be an early spring.

18 inches of snow here. I’m close enough to my office to walk to work–only problem is that I can’t open the door to leave the house because of the drifts!

Mary, that sounds so “Little House on the Prarie” to me.

Received less than anticipated here in Toronto but the school boards all announced closings for the day. It’s the first snow day here in 12 years, and in reality, they could have opened. When the decision had to be made early this morning, though, it still looked like we’d be getting more than the 8-10 inches that we now have. Many people have stayed home from work as a result and the downtown area is much quieter than normal. The downtown universities are open, much to the chagrin, I’m sure, of my Ds who attend. I hope the groundhogs are right this year, I’m ready for spring! My dogs, on the other hand, are loving all this snow.

Shoveling and shoveling here in Wisconsin. Bright and sunny, my neighborhood feels like a big party, as we’re all outside working on sidewalks and driveways, chatting, kids playing. Most of us love the drama and pause in busy lives, with most educational institutions and offices closed. My hospital offered free overnight accommodation to employees, but luckily I didn’t have to work this AM.

My poor sick D, a little south of here, has to go to class, as her intrepid LAC is still open!

The sunshine makes the shoveling a lot easier to take. We also got 18 inches here, west of Chicago. DH in PA had an inch of ice to deal with. I think I got the better deal.

Here in Houston, it is cold, cold, cold for us. Low was 20 degrees. They are predicting snow on Thursday/Friday. Very unusual for this area. We have had rolling blackouts all day due to broken water pipes at a power plant in Austin.

pipmom,

Will Houston shut down with that snow? D is in SA and the same is expected there. According to the NWS, some parts could get 3 in.

gloworm, We totally shutdown in snow. You’d think the blizzard of the century is on the way listening to the local news.

Dallas normally gets the more extreme highs & low temps. They should be better by the weekend for the SuperBowl though.

We’ll be staying inside. The college kids will be out building snowmen I am sure (snow is a big deal here :-).

I always think its interesting how different areas respond differently to snow. Last week between my work shift ending one day and my work shift starting the next day we got 12 inches of snow overnight. The roads were cleared by the morning and we opened a tiny bit late. My dad was on a business trip in NC when I was a kid and they got 3 inches of snow and the businesses shut down for four days!

I know we’re more used to it up here, but four days for three inches seems a bit extreme!

^^fendergirl: I have been told by people who have transplanted from NE/midwest to NC that the NC local governments do not have salt/sand, nor plows…but 4 days sounds excessive

NC resident here - It would make no sense for us to have any snow removal equipment. I’ve lived here over 20 years and can count maybe 10-12 times it has snowed enough to shut things down. We get way more ice than snow and there’s is nothing to do about ice no matter where you are. There have been years when we have has no snow at all.

I know you guys don’t get snow very often, but what I mean is up here 3 unplowed inches isn’t even enough to delay work yet alone close it for four days. I guess it’s just lack of snow and lack of learning to drive in snow and what to do in that situation. I don’t mean to single out NC, but there are a lot of states like that.

Yep, I’ve noticed the same thing happens in Tennessee as well. 3" wouldn’t even phase us up here. Why plow the drive when one can make tracks with the 4WD pickup?

Yeah, I don’t shovel 3 inches. I don’t have 4WD either… I just drive on it and put down some salt and it takes care of itself in a day or so. 4 inches and up, that I’ll shovel. My car is pretty small to go through 6 inches of snow!
