Yeah, I’m just hoping it is a sign of a UF acceptance.

My school does not rank, so that luckily isn’t a factor for me. I go to a competitive private school, so if they did rank, it would have effectively killed my application to almost everywhere I applied. Also, the requirement for the UM scholarship was to be in the top 10%. My school has the record, but they don’t release it to colleges. They told me once though earlier this year that I was in the top 40% with a 4.2 Weighted. Yikes. (Just shows how competitive it is.) I love my school’s policies. :)

Also, because it is private, many more students eventually choose to go out of state instead of remain in Florida. This opens up the race for admission a bit within the school, if UF actually pays close attention to the stats of individual schools. I think only the ultra-selective private schools monitor admission rates from individual high schools though.

Probably. I also heard that UM only accepted around 10% this year. Some of my friends with really good stats didn’t get in. Do you think getting into UM is any type of indication of getting into UF?

There’s no way they only accepted 10%. Maybe they’re using the number of students who eventually matriculate instead of the total number of applicants.

Well on the acceptance letter it said that they accpeted 2,000 out of 20,000 applicants. You may be right, but that still means they accepted a pretty low percentage.

I doubt it. UM accepted some pretty poor students at my school. Students with <1300 SAT scores, and they truly weren’t making any significant impact at the school either. And I’m sure there essays were sub par.

Getting into UM is by no means some stellar achievement, and I am sure there is an explanation to there “10% acceptance rate”. Perhaps 90% of the applicants had an SAT score of a 700 (M + CR combined).

According to these, UM has both a lower acceptance rate and higher SAT/ACT averages than UF. In fact, it’s 38% acceptance rate is close to that of UF’s this year.

Also, because UM is a private school, they tend to weigh non-academic factors of applications more heavily than public schools. What would you call “significant impact?” An officership? Class president? From my experience, there are always things that I don’t know about my own classmates that are amazing and perhaps get them into the colleges of their choice.

Also, I have UM’s acceptance letter in front of me. It says they went through 20,000 applications for 2,000 spots in the freshman class. They accepted more than 2,000, because not everyone accepted actually matriculates.

I agree that in technically UF is more selective than UM, but you can’t argue with statistics. Even then, it is only by a small margin. The only reason I brought UM was was because I was hoping the scholarship actually meant something to anyone in terms of my chances at UF.
