Silver Sneakers

I’ve been told
my YMCA gets $4/visit (not per class) up to 10 visits per month. I think the monthly cost for a single to join is about $50, maybe more for a non-senior. There are a lot of seniors there in the mornings taking Silver sneakers classes and aqua fitness, some yoga, just swimming laps so seniors are a big part of the Y’s budget. Silver Sneakers classes have 50 max and are almost always full, so that’s $ 4x 50 or $200 just for that 1 hour class. Some seniors also buy a band for the exercise machines (it remembers your workouts and sets the machines for you) that are about $15/mo, pay for pilates, pay for training session so the Y makes a little more off of them.

Silver Sneakers is great for people who already work out – we save money. But I don’t know if it incentivizes someone who’s not active to become active.

Correct. But you can use Silver Sneakers (and Renew Active) at more than a few gyms. IOW you can join several gyms.

At one point, DH did indoor cycling at one place and swimming at another. And when we go on vacation, he uses gyms local to the vacation spot.

That’s what I meant.

We didn’t have that luck in CA. Only one gym let us use it day by day. Another wouldn’t take it unless we applied it to a recurring monthly membership.

I have memberships at Anytime Fitness and Planet Fitness through Silver Sneakers. I’ve used both outside my local area without issue.

They have an app with some things intended to motivate.

That wouldn’t motivate me.

:woman_shrugging: it sends out emails also, and once logged into the app, there are lots of choices. I don’t personally do it, but I think there are lots of options in the app. That may encourage users . What kind of things would you find motivating?

Sounds like you may have UHC ? Whatever theirs is called? Our experience was different unfortunately

For me, what turned out to be most motivating was to use a trainer. Once I made the commitment (and was spending the money), it was a lot harder to blow off the appointment. Eventually, I figured out that I could do the workouts on my own, made friends at the gym, and enjoyed it. I also do pilates and yoga and if I buy a pass (most places will sell 5 or 10 class packages) I will use it. I’m not perfect but I hate to waste money so that usually gets me going.

There is nothing in the world that would motivate me to intentionally produce a bead of sweat. How unladylike.

Well, I already exercise seven days a week, so I’m not sure I need motivation!

Horses sweat. Men perspire. Women glow.

Was just showing that for some who need motivation, SS seems to have options.

There is nothing in the world that could induce me to “glow” (shudder).

Yes, we have Silver Sneakers through our United Health supplement plan. Someone at the YMCA told me that Silver Sneakers benefits can vary depending on which insurance provider you’re with.

I believe UHC has a different plan now- its no longer silver sneakers

My mistake. I have Humana.

I have Humana too, and had trouble using the silver sneakers in some CA gyms that accept silver sneakers.

We used to have Renew Active, and now have Silver Sneakers. DH had no difficulty using either when we have visited family who don’t live here. But it might be that he just picked the right places that allowed him to do so.
