My insurance used to have Silver Sneakers, and the gym I’ve been going to forever accepted that. This past January, my insurance changed to something called Silver & Fit – same idea, but different. I lobbied my gym to accept that, and as of May, they did. I had to pay a whopping $25 per month from February through May, but it’s back to being free again. I’m a happy camper.
My Humana SS worked for Planet Fitness in California.
My Silver Sneakers plan (through Anthem), works well in any Midwest home area Y’s but none of the Seattle area Y’s will accept. Disappointing.
My Humana (I think it is Silver Sneakers) gets me a membership at the Y, and then I can use that membership to use any Y in the US. At least that’s what they told me. I have a YMCA membership number.
My SIL was able to work out at our Y’s with his military ID. Not sure if it was limited to a certain number of visits. I can take a guest to my Y for free up to 3 times, but they have to give info like email and phone number as I’m sure they’ll be contacted to join up.
I’m sure the gyms decide what they will accept…everywhere. My DH is a member of two gyms…a private one and the Y. And he has used the local Y in Phoenix (which is very nice) when we have been there.
An upcoming class reunion
At one of my reunions, I quipped…”if you think any of the women look plump, think about what we all looked like three months ago, because none of us came here without being on a diet”.
The women looked fabulous!
I hope this doesn’t offend anyone!
I don’t think I can lose 30 pounds by Aug 7th.
As long as people are happy with their bodies, they should be glad they’re still up to going to the reunions! My H’s buddies and classmates really enjoy their reunions and some fly in to attend. I didn’t attend my 50th reunion because I didn’t know anyone attending that I cared to see or reconnect with. I actually have friends from JR high I am still close to and travel with, but no one from HS or even college or law school. It’s strange how life is and where we meet and keep friends.
I went to my 50th college reunion (wouldn’t have gone if my husband hadn’t agreed to come too) and I ended up getting to know several classmates I really did not know in college. If I had gone only to see friends I knew, it would have been a big mistake.
Hear, hear!!
I went to silver sneakers class. Just too slow, Zumba is my favorite.
I’m going to have to check my supplemental plan more closely(Medical Mutual) to see if I have any options. A gym is something I might add in to my exercise routine when I fully retire.
I have a monthly yoga membership at a local studio. I discovered that my BCBS Medicare Supplement plan will reimburse up to $150 per calendar year. You just need to submit a form. I plan on doing that this year (my first year on Medicare.)
My Regence supplement plan’s program is called Silver and Fit. I think it operates like silver sneakers, there are a number of close places it covers, including my Y. There are “premium” facilities where I get a discount.
I’ll change my membership at the Y in August.
A tidbit we learned on a rec center tour for Silver Sneakers (and Renew Active etc) classes is that there are always chair in the classroom. Per google verification - “SilverSneakers offers a wide variety of fully seated, chair-based workouts that provide low-impact cardio, strength training, and flexibility without joint strain”.
Not everybody in Silver Sneaker classes is over 65. Some are paying for class while recovering from injury or not quiet old enough.
We have several younger ones. Not the majority, but say 5 out of 50.
I’m not sure how the Silver Sneakers works at my Y. I just assumed they covered the membership fee. I know I can use my Y membership at out of town locations. Nowhere on the membership card does it say Silver Sneakers. They do have a class three days a week that is called Silver Sneakers. Any member can go to any group classes.
I’ve never inquired out of town as I’m not usually looking for a gym when I’m on vacation.
Silver Sneakers is handled by your medical insurance company. SS has some sort of relationship with the Y or the gym where the Y or the gym gets paid somehow by SS. Your gym membership card wouldn’t say SS on it. To the gym, you’re just another member – albeit one for whom they get paid differently.
Yes, I scan in and the computer records my usage and gets paid (I’m told) $4 per visit up to 10 per month. But my scan in is no different than any other Y member’s, so I’m told I can use it at any Y in the USA.
