Sing-off

Somehow I missed this show the first season, but it is amazing! It’s a vocal competition and all the acts are a capella. Amazing.

Anyone else loving it?

I watched it last year and did not think it was that good. Saw the adds for it this year and decided to give it another chance as I had seen On the Rocks on youtube. Thoroughly enjoyed it this time round.

Enjoyed the show. Will be interested to see how they develop in a short time.

I love this show!!! A cappella music of any kind just amazes me. My favorites so far: the wiffenpoofs and Ben Folds’ critiques, which are so intelligent and spot-on!

My son (who normally has no interest in music) found this show last night and started watching. I really enjoyed it.

churchmusicmom, I agree, Ben Folds is wonderful. He’s honest and knowledgable and expresses himself very well. It’s unfortunate that we need to listen to Nicole Scherzinger on the same panel. I watched last year and remember having to mute the tv when it was her turn to speak!

I think there were fairly obvious differences in a few of the groups last night and wasn’t too surprised with who they sent home. The kids from Cherry Hill were cute and enthusiastic but not up to the same standard as most of the others. What did surprise me was that the group from Berklee wasn’t better. I think the high school group may be the next to go. Does anyone know if the elimination will work the same way as last year, with voting only starting when they get down to the final three?

This was a good show last season, and it looks to be even better this year with a huge boost in the quality of the groups. The group from Berklee that got booted last night could have won last season. It was great to see the Whiffs on TV (including the oldest son of a close friend from college). But many of the groups seemed to have ringers, I fear this season is going to belong to the pros. I mean, come on, how were Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman even going to consider voting against an actual Persuasion in the first round?

Ben Folds is great – the best reality-show judge around. I think Shawn Stockman does a great job, too. And they both have been-there, done-that credibility. As for the Paula-Mini-Me Pussycat Doll . . . she is very easy on the eyes, and not yet the caricature of herself Ms. Abdul turned into.

I was surprised by the Berklee group as well. With them all being music majors and hyping their music expertise so much my expectations were perhaps too high. I was also surprised, but in a good way, by the Whiffenpoofs. Very entertaining. I kind of feel Jerry Lawson and the Talk of the Town maybe don’t belong in this competition, wonderful though they are. Aren’t they already professionals?

I actually liked Nicole as a judge.

I am absolutely furious with myself! I forgot it was on and was on the road last night, of all places, driving 700 miles to D2’s school to see her a cappella concert tonight! A cappella is huge on her campus; I think there are five groups on a campus of 2300 students.

I’m sure I can find last night’s show online somewhere and will be tuned in next week for sure.

I loved last season! Oh, and D2’s group has done a Ben Folds song (retired it a year ago, but it was great).

This show makes ds and I wish we knew more about music. He’s long been a Ben Folds fan (and now, I am, too, but in a cougarish kind of way). His critiques are so fabulous, but we just don’t have the technical knowledge to “hear” the groups like Folds does. I know what I like, and I didn’t love the Beyonce song like the judges did, though the lead singer was fabulous. And I liked the Berklee kids more than the judges. Jerry Lawson seems like he shouldn’t be on. Don’t have a problem with the Nashville guy because no one has heard of him.

Very entertaining show that I’ll have to miss Wednesday. :(

teriwtt, set your DVR now because the next show is tomorrow night, not next week. They are doing 2 a week.

I watched last night and loved the show. I am also one of those that can’t believe I missed the first season last spring. Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman are giving great critiques to the groups. I think Nicole Scherzinger is the “Paula Abdul” of the panel just saying something nice about everyone.

I also thought the kids from Berklee would fair better than they did. I set the DVR last night just in case I forget it is on again tomorrow.

I rarely watch TV and didn’t realize this was back on again for this year this week. I did watch it last year due to my interest in a capella. Last year actually, my D’s a capella group (brand new alums from her award winning collegiate a capella group) were finalists for being selected for The Sing Off. They had to sign contracts for it and everything, as I guess the show selected a few more than the 8 final groups in case not all the contracts went through. They did not end up on the show. I followed the show out of interest and knew two of the groups. Also, I am an alum of Tufts and the Beezelbubs were in it and I thought they would win (they came in second).

I just looked at the website for the show and see that this year they have 11 groups (I guess if that was the case last year, my D’s group would have been it it). I know Berklee’s group called Pitch Slapped. My D’s group has competed against them. My D’s group was third in the International Finals for collegiate a capella in my D’s junior year. In her senior year, Pitch Slapped beat out her group to go to International Finals. Based on what you guys are saying, they were eliminated in the first round on The Sing Off though.

I might have to tune in again!

I’m rooting for “The Backbeats”, the group from USC. Their lead singer has an amazing voice and it will be interesting to see who else steps up and stands out within their group, if they’re still around, as the show progresses. I found the group from Berklee and their name in particular (“Pitch Slapped”) to be slightly offensive, and it takes a lot to offend me. I’ve never liked the expression that the group named itself after. I guess I won’t have to worry about it any longer after last night…

Loved the Whiffenpoofs last night. Very clean, very tight, very funny.

I was also surprised that the group from Berklee wasn’t better. Sounded to me like they just hadn’t put the time in and worked together enough.

OK, experts – what was wrong with Berklee? Sounded great to me.

I love the clever names of the a cappella groups. At my daughter’s school, they have one named the Clef Hangers.

Agreed! The university Comedy Improv groups often have clever names, too.

Oops, i managed to cut off the end of my “critique” post #15!

Committed was fantastic!!! Cannot wait to hear more.

I missed it!! My D is excited to see that one of her favorite (not famous) Nashville singers is in it … Jeremy Lister. I will have to tune in next time.
