Singaporean connection

CR7 : Modesty is a quality that only people who dont have other qualities possess ! I am special and i can behave like I want to !
I am from Bulgaria btw ,and last year I was to Singapore. It is great country ,really peaceful and safe .

ahh ok ,just wanted some rough numbers

I went to Mcgill University for my undergraduate. I spent approx S$100,000 includ. living expenses. I’m not much of a saver, but I lived in a dump sh ithole apartment.

My sis went to UMich (Bachelor and Masters) spent approx. US$300,000 includ. living expense. She’s a mini diva… so it might be on the high side. Some more rough numbers for you.

I’m in China now. If I buy a mobile phone over here, can I use it over at the states?

^ You will need a phone that supports Quad-band GSM basically. GSM850, 900, 1800, 1900-compatible.

I wish all those who got into the college of their dreams good luck!

I got into my first, second and fourth choice college. And I will be heading to NUS due to unforseen financial cirumstances. I’m definitely going to the US for graduate school, so I’ll be coming back to collegediscussion in 4 years time!

nelle: That’s really tough. I hope my financial circumstances won’t hold me back - I’ll be really ****ed if they end up doing so. But I don’t think they will.

NUS is pretty good, btw. Not a bad deal.

Regarding phones, I’m guessing most of you will be suspending your SG mobile contracts while you’re away in the US? Does anyone know if an iPhone bought locally can be used there directly, without any incompatibility issues?

i think its best to but it there, firstly its MUCH cheaper, and you get a contract with AT&T …

^ Or T-Mobile, which is what i planned on getting myself.

I want the rest of my decisions now…

Join the ****ed-off-anxious-for-decisions club, girl.

i got into carnegie mellon! anyone else?

Hi people, its amazing to see such a thread on CC that has so many Singaporean voices. You can’t imagine how bored one gets even in SoCal. Seriously, its interesting to read all these posts and imagine all of us, being Singaporeans, griping about these issues. Some things I’d like to point out, as a current student in the states is how often one romanticizes the idea of an overseas education. Its true, that its a huge breakaway from standard NUS/NTU/SMU educational system, in fact, its probably one of the greatest things to happen to an individual, especially if one is interested in the field of liberal, fine, performance arts or the humanities. But seriously, when time comes when you’re alone and craving for that bowl of singaporean laksa when you’re having a bout of fever, like what happened to me a couple months ago, that is a feeling that is indescribable. And by that last term, its used in a negative not positive sense. LOL.

Its scary too, remembering my time as a student in Singapore, I am turning 24 now and studied at Chinese High and HCJC , how we were all so obsessed with getting into US schools like HYP and even places like Uchicago, Umich, Cornell, Penn. I have two personal advice for all you aspiring US-system hopefuls. Firstly, like one of the previous poster said, all of you are amazing people and please do not allow any college application decision define you. Secondly, if you are really bent on coming to the states for your BA studies, know the real reason why. For me, its because of my interest in philosophy and economics and how the two subjects can be combined into the study of rational/decision theory. Having a passion for what you’re studying will be what differentiates you from the average student here in the States. Nearly every subject and professor I have studied under here loves to see a passion and how every subject can be viewed upon not solely on itself but from a multi-disciplinary view. After all, thats the advantage and the whole idea of being in a liberal education and not just “mugging” for a subject.

I have just returned to pursue my Bachelors at the age of 23. Working for my dad after I passed out from the SAF. It took me a couple of years to finally decide what I want to study and where my passion for academia lies. I am thankful that I am privileged enough to pursue this non-traditional route and I am not suggesting at all that this is a better way. However, I hope that my story gives a little hope to all those out there who are struggling with the system back in Singapore. I did not do well for my A levels due to medical conditions, came to a community college here and am excelling in my classes and applied for Columbia after my first semester. I got accepted two weeks ago.

All in all, lets keep this thread going for as long as we can. Personally, its good reading material when I am not bothered by essays on Wittgenstein or Kant, especially when its bedtime and there’s a cup of Milo in hand. And I think many of the posters here dispense good information. If there is anything that I can serve of help let me know, I’ll be checking the updates to this thread often. And by the way, if you guys are intending to get iPhones from Apple or ATT here, take note that they will only do so if you place a security deposit of around 1000 or is it 500 USD? I’m not too sure, but thats the way America works. Remember, we are no longer citizens but “foreign aliens”.

Cheers! I hope everyone who has applied for US colleges get a favorable decision since it is decision time soon here! :)

^ thanks for the advice :D

by the way, does anyone know here how to apply for universities in Singapore as my third choice universities? I am a Hongkonger and am currently doing the IB diploma.

Thanks for some advice.

oh. just wondering. anyone is interested to go for the admitted weekends for the US schools?

Yes, I’m interested in attending one of NYU’s admitted student programs. Dang pity they’re in NYC, London, Paris and Florence :p

oh. ticket to NYC cost about S$1100 now. quite a good deal i guess if u are interested.

SERIOUS! I wish I could lock that price - I’m budgeting ~S$2500 for flights to NYC, but I suspect that won’t be enough when the time comes.

But nope, I won’t be going for the admitted students thing. Have to settle $$ and scholarship issues here first.
