You could also apply during NS, so that’s three times total. End of J2, end of 1st year in NS, end of 2nd year in NS.

I have two offers from two mid-tier universities with essentially full-ride. Disregarding the ethics of the act, what would be the likely outcome if I placed deposit for both places and then applied to other colleges for the next application cycle?

Your high school would be blacklisted, and if the schools found you, your offers would be rescinded right away.

that’s damn unethical. i hope you’re not from bishan jc.

ferret: care to share which universities and how much fin aid you were given and your grades? “essentially full-ride” sounds like a good deal.

wah ferret, you don’t know how lucky you are -_- mid-tier universities as they may be, but you got a full ride. you don’t need to fight for scholarships, and you don’t need to worry about not getting one. it’s completely bond-free and you can pick from any career you want. if you’re worried about prestige, then just do well in your mid-tier university (should be no problem for you) and go to HYPSM for grad school (should be no problem since you didn’t pay a single cent for undergrad), and the world will be at your feet. don’t be so name-conscious and maybe you’ll realise how fortunate you are.

funny since rs_ong is matriculating into NTU this year

actually many of the people here are well-qualified to get scholarships at mid-tier colleges. its just a pity that I don’t see many people here applying for mid-tier colleges.

Hi, I got an conditional offer of AAA (A for Physics) from Electrical Imperial. However, my A-Level results are AAAB (B for Physics). Is there any chance for me to appeal against the decision? I sent them an awarded research project I did in NUS (SRP). But I don’t want to wait in vain… Anyone please help!

My experiences should be a caveat against the mentality that there are effectively 3 windows to apply to universities for guys who will serve N.S… If affording the education is an issue and you intend to pursue financial aid (need or merit), you have to consider the fact that universities in general do not defer financial aid packages. If you end up rejecting the university because of this, you might find it difficult to receive the same offer if you choose to apply to the same university during your last window.

If I could do the college application process again, I would have chosen to apply during the last window of my N.S. cycle and to many many more universities.

@preciouspurple11: SAT 1: 2300+; SAT 2: 800 for Chem and Maths 2; AAAB. Both universities (probably rank 40-50 in the U.S.) offered me full-tuition and benefits, which is more than full-ride actually, and I am incredibly grateful.

Ferret: If you deposit at both places and are discovered (quite likely as adcoms often travel together, especially those in similar rankings, and they talk with one another a lot) you will be rescinded, your school blacklisted, I think yourself blacklisted too in the adcom circles so you can’t “try for” places anymore. I’d definitely take (one of) the free ride and enjoy myself there, and if you really want to, transfer during your degree.

FreedayFF: Email Imperial to see if they’ll take you with AAAB? They may make you wait until UK A Levels R-Day though, but worth a shot. Good luck (:

Yes, they indeed made me wait ):
Was there anyone who faced the same situation like me here?

hi, how recognised is georgetown school of foreign service in singapore?

are you on scholarship? if you are, then no need to worry about such a thing.

Quick question about NUS. How good is their physics program? Its ranked at 70-100 in the world by that Shanghai university ranking (not sure about the exact name) and people say this is a very objective ranking unlike the Times rankings. Still thought I’d get input from you guys. Any personal experiences would be welcome.

Also, I plan on majoring in physics and am really into theoretical physics than industry based physics. What employment options (to fulfill my bond) am I looking at? Thanks everyone :D

Oh my other option is a near full ride at a university ranked just inside the top 100 colleges in the US

I snooped around your posts for a bit, you’re an ASEAN/Indian scholar coming to Singapore on scholarship with six-year bond, right? As a theoretical physicist, finding a job related to your subject area might be difficult Singapore simply doesn’t have the critical mass to have any significant theoretical physics research. :|

You certainly enjoy your fizix, now, don’t you? Amazingg :)

I can’t imagine an employer -in the field- not recognising the worth of a SFS degree. But that’s just me. If you have a scholarship then don’t worry about it; it’s free schooling in a lovely city with great internship opportunities (and 90-degree days in April - grr). For reference my parents had heard of Georgetown before we moved here and they’re the type of people who could barely name the Ivies, so…(:

phyz: if you have a six-year bond doesn’t it mean that the government has to give you a job after graduation? (I could be wrong, but if not then you wouldn’t have to worry about it)

Well no, but something like teaching which keeps you closer than most other jobs? I’m thinking of a compromise, not looking for the perfect deal. Only thing is most places need you to be trained by NIE before they give you a teaching post. Is this the case for jobs in NUS and NTU’s phy depts?
