^ Well I got waitlisted by Cornell and got into Stanford - so not much of a safety school there either.

Haha I got rejected by Cornell. I think my application was rather half-hearted, but I also get the feeling that Cornell values academic achievements more than Stanford, which is why a lot of Rafflesians find it easier to get into.

How do I sign up for SAT subject tests? Is it online?

I apologise if the answer is really obvious!

^ go to collegeboard dot com, the same place where you signed up for SAT reasoning test.

JCX: just curious why did you apply to Cornell? You got into Stanford SCEA right?

I submitted my applications to Stanford, Cornell, Caltech and CMU at the same time last October out of convenience. I would be in Japan for a month in December and wasn’t all that hopeful about getting into Stanford anyway. I received my admission notice via email while I was in Osaka. :)

Hey guys, sorry I’m back again hahaha! Just wondering: did you all attach a resume of sorts? What about all the CCA and CIP certificates?
I thought a resume or something like that would be a nice way to round up all the things I’ve done from grade 9 to 12, but I was just wondering whether I need to submit all the CCA and CIP certificates that I’ve received from school as well because I’m afraid that would be flooding them with too many attachments, especially since my sec sch CCA cert is like 3 pages long and not entirely relevant since it contains a lot of Sec 1 and 2 stuff.
Or do i usually just attach my grades transcript + resume and that’s it?
Also, I believe I never opted for the hardcopy of my SAT grades so I never got them in the mail. As long Collegeboard sends the SAT scores, I don’t need to send a hardcopy over, right?
Okay sorry for rambling on and on hahaha (: Thanks for all your help so far!

I attached a CV. If they want to see proof, they will ask you for it.

Yep, so long as the collegeboard sends your scores and the schools receive them - you’ve got no problems.

wait so where do you take the SATs from ?? do they have a place ? or do you just need a computer connected to the internet ?? i’m confused lol

^ It’s a paper-based test. You register and pay the fee at collegeboard.com, then go to a test centre on a Saturday morning to sit for your test.

another question if you don’t mind ?? can you sit for this test anytime during the year or are there specific dates like the GCE-O/A levels ?? i’ll probably be sitting for it twice to get a good score so i’d like to know if i’ll be having to wait 6 months or sth for another sitting, after my first.

thanks

Here are the 2009-10 Test Dates. You can actually go to the College Board website to find out the dates and when you need to register for them.

I attached my official school CCA record. You can technically throw whatever supporting documents you want into the envelope. It’s all rather flexible.

Of course it’s not a good thing to include too much stuff because it will annoy the person reading your application, so it’s up to your own discretion to decide which is important.

Certificates other than your school reports are definitely NOT necessary though. You can just write your achievements in the relevant places on the application form. The school will ask you for proof if they require it, which they seldom do.

hi, i have a question
some schools, instead of asking for the supplemental essay, just require us to submit a graded paper. So is it a good idea if we submit a GP Essay… (like lets say I once got 38/50 :stuck_out_tongue: )

^ Well why not?

Hi guys, I just got back from a Penn admissions talk. The rep from Penn, who’s the Associate Dean of International Admissions there, said that Singaporean males in the 1st year of NS are discouraged from applying for admission (with intent to defer matriculation for a year), and was seriously hinting that there’s a good chance they wouldn’t even be given fair consideration by the admissions committee if they did so. Her reason was that “there’s no way to compare you with the applicant pool we’d be receiving in a year’s time.” According to her, Penn only grants 2-year deferrals or no deferral at all, and the 2-year deferral is only given if the applicant had also applied for a PSC scholarship in the same year, but wasn’t awarded one to disrupt NS early.

Do you guys know if the other Ivies or top-tier schools practice this policy?

^ Huh? Really? Maybe that’s the reason I was summarily rejected by Penn - wanted to defer for 2 years and didn’t bother to apply for a PSC scholarship. But then again it doesn’t make sense, unless Penn doesn’t grant any deferrals to US students at all.

As far as I know, Stanford doesn’t seem to care whether you go immediately, defer for a year, or defer for two years. I don’t think the rest (HYPMCC) care either.

some of my friends told me that to submit a gp essay was a stupid idea
they said the type of essay was totally different in US and in Singapore.
like here, whatever the question might be ‘discuss/do you agree/ how far do you…’, we always have to provide 2 sides of the argument. and must have counter argument, rebuttal blah blah…
but in US they don’t do so, they just answer what the question asks or smt like that.

so i’m kinda confused whether to submit the gp essay or not…:?

^ Well, if I were you I would submit it. I assume the admissions officers over there are familiar enough with the education system over here to know what GP requires of students.

J2 guy here, applying this year to a few colleges, most prolly not applying for psc… Well from what I know, HYPSM can defer for 2 years for NS… But do u think fair consideration will be given? Cuz they have to like commit for 2 years which is really troublesome…

Anyway, taking SAT this sat, anyone else taking? Heh…

Ehhhh, kind of stupid question here, but should I feel inadequate that I am unable to fill up all 7 spaces of the Common App extracurriculars form? I honestly have nothing to fill it up with except for CCA and some long-term CIP projects I’ve had, because honors/scholarships don’t go there…but it feels so damn empty compared to all the other ‘chances’ threads I’ve seen where people have a trillion long-term projects hahaha
Also, if I did a MOE H3 paper, it goes onto the listing of subjects I’ve taken, right?
