i think some US universities allow for deferment, but not sure which. i don’t know much about business courses so i cant help you there, sorry.

i would recommend you retake your SAT, with your score it will not be easy to get into any of the schools you mentioned as these are all top, top schools for business and competition for places is very competitive. if you look through this thread you’ll see what i mean(i think look around page ~295? someone posted a profile there IIRC.)

and try to down pes if you get one of those chiong vocations(i.e rifleman), you will probably find it difficult to get time to complete your application. even preparing to go over there will be difficult.

some people think it is. then again i wasn’t specifically referring to clerk. there are plenty of appointments in various vocations that afford one more free time even as pes AB. down pesing just gives a better chance of getting one of those appointments.

off the top of my head, service medic is one. signals instructor too. either way i dont think being a clerk is meaningless, its somewhat like working in a proper office: office politics, unreasonable bosses, etc. ofc its the SAF so…

btw, trivolve your location is making me jealous ):

I was a service medic in the airforce. To be honest, I had a stay out vocation and I even “moonlight” by working in a tuition center. I made about 1k a month. Add that to my 500 bucks from mindef n i’ll take back like 1.5k. Thank goodness i had a good mdm that allowed me to moonlight. During my medic course, i learnt useful skills such as IV, CPR, first aid and lots of other useful things.

You also cannot imagine the amount of recognition i get. Partially because i was fortunate to get such a lucky posting. My unit had lots of 3 craps , its a interesting perspective tt u get… if u r a men in a chiong sua unit. U only get to see their cream and proper side of things. But when u are working with them in the unit for like a year. U can see them behave in ways which u could never imagine n besides its always good to have a perspective of how LTCs and colonels interact with one another in the office… like office politics and stuff.

Oops, didn’t look at this thread for a long time.

OSU Columbus accepted me. IUB accepted me, too. Goucher may not be a super awesome LAC like Reed, but given my circumstances (Asperger’s & somewhat tight finances) and the statistics where around 75% of graduates eventually head on to graduate school (which is what I’m aiming for), I’m perfectly happy with what I have. The school has already agreed to offer counselling services for at least the first year and that’s more than what I can ask of for many crowded Tier 1 & public schools.

I would say that CAE is a choice for Singaporeans who majorly ****ed up their academics like me and need a second chance. I dropped out of JC & Poly because of the inability to cope due to Asperger’s that I didn’t discover until I was diagnosed during NS. To me, CAE was a pretty amazing second chance for folks like me, without which I’d be leading quite the hopeless existence.

But then again, I also see quite a few 16 year-old Singaporeans whose parents decided to give the finger to the A-Levels, and the girls managed to go off to Purdue or IUB while the guys get their AA and enlist after that.

It’s not an option for people who’re talking about Stanford, but then again not everybody can afford Stanford, Harvard or Yale.

Hi, I was just wondering what my chances to Georgetown MSB cornell Nyu stern USC Umich and Uva?

SAT I (breakdown): 2160 (730 R, 790 M, 640 W)
SAT II: Math 2 (780) Chem : 800 Phy : 800
A Levels (place score in parenthesis): A B B / B

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Track and Field 7th to 12th grade( sec 1 to JC 1) Placed 2nd and 3rd for a national event. Won several relays in several competitions. Vice captain of team in 9th and 10th grade.
President of environmental club, hosted several projects and did some community service here and there.
Served the army after junior college ( part of national service). Was an officer cadet and now a commissioned officer serving in a unit. ( don’t know if that’s applicable in a college application).
A lot of other random cca’s but didnt bother to put them down yet. yup

And i dont need financial aid. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i’d say you have a chance, but your a levels are gonna hurt you i think. your ECs are pretty impressive though. i can’t really comment though, im also finding out myself, plus i lean more towards engineering :P

you guys made it sound so easy to study abroad in US. I’m going to a community college next year alone to do my studies! Feeling quite excited and nervous at the same time. Can anybody advise what should I expect? And is there any community or groups where I can join? Or even better, any fellow Singaporeans going to NYC next year?

Hahah it easy if you have the necessarily grade

U Mich would be fairly easy if you have grades that fits their entry profile , that being said you also have to make sure not to screw up your essay

The fact is that it is not easy , but singaporean are fairly overachieving in terms of Grades. Beside those that are interested in the states tends to lean toward the upper percentile

Did anyone know, or actually did, got into Wharton this year? Im so in love with Wharton but not even sure whether there are that many kids from Singapore going there…

Btw, for my SAT I I got Maths (800), Writing (700) and CR(630)<– this kills me so bad. I was scolded for 1,5 hours by my teacher–in-charged for getting back late (which was due to traffic jamTT) and couldnt sleep for the whole night, so my brain jammed right thereTT SHould I take SAT again in October?

Luckily I got all 800 for Maths 2 Chem Phy so shouldnt be that that bad:( Of course there are other things but yeah, for the time being I more concerned of this…

UMich isn’t thaat easy to get in. I have a friend who scored well in JC (but messed up SATs/ACTs) and was rejected from UMich. UVA doesn’t seem thaat easy to get into either, I may put it as a slight reach for you ben267.

@coffeeaddict92, I know of two people who got into Wharton from Singapore this year, although I’m sure there are more. One was a friend from school/CCA. PM me if you really want to know more.

Hi, I’m a student from the Other Bukit Timah JC.I did my A levels in 2009 and tried applying to various US colleges last year. I overestimated myself and got rejected by every one of them (darn). Furthermore, I think my essays were not nearly as good as they could have been.

I intend to study physics, given my profile (below), which colleges do you think I should apply for?

O level results: 7A1s 1A2 (Chinese)
A level results: PCMK (AAAA), H3 Physics Research and H3 Essentials of Modern Physics (dist dist), PW (B) and chinese (D)
SAT I: 670 (W), 770 (M), 780 (CR)
Achievements: SSEF gold, A*TS commendation, co-published a paper in the Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, SChO silver, LKY Math and Science Award, participated in the International Summer School for Young Physicists, Mathsoc vice-chairman
Misc: I did a research attachment at IMRE as a H3 subject. Continued the attachment on and off until I enlisted. Am now in a RSAF detachment in Texas, hoping to enter some good university next year.
