Question: Are my hopes too high? Am I a hopeful candidate for these school? Also, how generous are American schools with Financial Aid.

Thanks a million folks!

For your reach school, are you referring to Washington University in St. Louis or University of Washington (Seattle)? The latter is ranked better globally by the top few surveyors (Worldwide: ARWU 16th, QS 59th, Times 25th, URAP 8th, In 2012, SmartMoney named the University of Washington as 6th best salary returns on tuition.) It has a very nice campus and with a good essay and cca/leadership achievement, you are most likely in. It is a ‘safe’ school that is in your reach. Btw, I’m studying in University of Washington. FOR YOUR INTENDED MAJOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, its ranking is also MUCH better than Washington University in St. Louis in ALL surveys published in 2013. Not saying that UW is the best school for you, but i can say that it is the best SAFETY choice if you can’t enter your high reaches. Lastly, if you are into passion and not prestige, surrounding UW is a big vast of green, with the Cascades and Olympic Mountains/Mt. St. Helens/Rainier within the State with lots of environmentalists and campaigns. and for the aspect of research, it is ranked (from multiple survey sites: a range of 1st-11th in the World and USA). hahaha, i’m not pushing it, just feeling proud that I am a husky! of cos, I wish you all the best and hope that you can get into the Ivies.

As to your 2nd question about Financial Aid, very few (almost none) offer Financial Aid to international students, and you’re paying more than in-state students (assuming that you are not a US citizen). If you’re planning to get a job, you can only work on campus with the student visa issued to you by the school, and on campus jobs don’t pay much… unless you can get an alternative visa or a green card which I highly doubt so… I would suggest that you get a scholarship from Singapore, that will be your only choice to finance this great expense. Just getting to US and settling down will cost you alot not mentioning the monthly expenses, eg. airfares from 1100 USD onwards for one way (if you’re travelling with family, it’ll be more), getting an accomodation/deposits, etc. My budget for the first year is USD$60,000 for everything, considering a 4 quarter (including summer) school year. I studied Alevels, so I got my first year exempted from UW, but for poly i’m not sure… if no exemption would mean 4 years to complete your education (do the math for the sum you need). Ivies definitely cost more than the school I’m in! So do look into scholarships! Most likely you’ll be bonded though!

For those of you ppl who are studying in US universities right now, do you generally experience difficulty in integration into the student community and make American friends at all? I am thinking about this because I think Asians are sometimes unfairly stereotyped on the campus. So how hard do you find it to make American friends and how exactly can we make them befriend us? Thanks for your comments folks!

Hey guys! Was just wondering if a degree in engineering from purdue or Georgia tech is recognized by SG employers
Which of the two is more recognized in SG?

Any SGreans in Pomona / CMC / Mudd now?

I’m at one of the Claremont Colleges. There are some - I wouldn’t say many - Singaporeans here. They’re all great schools.

Hi all,

I am an asian male applying from Singapore. Due to the fact that I really have no strong preferences aspects in university but a strong intellectual climate that encourages undergrad research and intellectual growth, I (funnily) applied to 20 schools (yeah I have had a lot of time).

Would really appreciate if you could help me evaluate my odds in the b/m schools! I really have no idea how much of a long shot my schools are. I thought either go big or go home, because I have a place @ GEP in NUS, which is pretty decent. I am coming from a viewpoint where I will just see which schools accept me and then make decisions from there.

In no particular order: UChicago, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, UCBerkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Northwestern, Harvey Mudd, Claremont Mckenna, Pomona, Williams, , Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Vassar, Tufts, Washington U in St Louis.

My Academics:
SAT1: 1820 (2011) - tried out for fun and totally regret it now
2040 (2013) - 720M, 700CR, 620W
Both times my writing was crap so I guess that’s probably why I cannot get >2100 as most Singaporeans would.

SAT subject: Math II 800 (2013), Physics 740 (2013)

GCE A levels: B General Paper, A for H2 Physics, H2 Math, H2 Economics, H2 Chemistry, Project Work, Higher Chinese.
Alma mater: HCJC (with Hwa Chong Diploma with Merit)

Grades in Sec 3 and 4 were quite good (top 10% of Hwachong cohort). In J1, I was too involved in canoeing and it was really bad. In J2, my prelims were decent.

ECAs:
Sec 3 & 4
-ANU research attachment & personally attached to post-doctorate fellow (represented school)
-Beijing Satellite Campus attachment
-Competitive Badminton player

J1
-Competitive Canoeist
-Went to Gia Bac village to teach impoverished children and build classrooms
-Organizer of Service learning project to help underprivileged children from dysfunctional families & conduct weekly classes

J2
-Competitive Taekwondo Competitor (won 1st place Nationally)
-Organizer of Service learning project to help underprivileged children from dysfunctional families & conduct weekly classes

Post-J2
-Studying @ intermediate level French
-Practice MMA, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wing Chun
-Head Researcher and Staff Writer in Unit
-Commander operations assistant

Essays: In general, I am not a talented writer but I did put in months of effort. I would consider them decent, not spectacular, but not crappy.

Financial Aid: No.

Letters of Recommendations: I always annoyed my form teacher but it should be ok. My subject tutors are very nice and I was alright with them. For UChicago, I got a very strong alumnus to submit a strong letter of recommendation for me.

What do you guys think?
Please dont flame me for applying to 20 schools… Just broadening my options

OK this is just weird. Can someone tell me whether this is weird or not?

Northwestern: accept
Rice: accept
Dartmouth: accept (with substantial finaid)
Amherst: accept (with substantial finaid)

Hey guys! I’m seeeriously in need of some opinions. I got accepted into the archi faculty for NUS and the University of Cincinnati. I was accepted into the University Honors Program at UCinn, and they’ve awarded a yearly grant scholarship that will really help financially.

UCinn is top 10 in US for their graduate archi program, but their world ranking is horrible, and nobody (at least in Singapore) has heard of it. I’ve heard that they have one of the best coop program in the states (sth like attachment program), but if I don’t get a job in the states after I graduate, I think my prospects in Singapore would be super bleak.

NUS is still much cheaper and it’s overall ranking is better, but what about it’s archi ranking? I’d really love to go to the states to study (my dream since forever really), but I don’t wanna spend a bomb and not be able to find a job next time… I need your opinion guys! Has anyone heard of ucinn? It’s reputation?

How is gpa calculated? Will our JCs calculate a GPA for us?
