Singaporean connection

What’s CMI?

screwitlah: If we’re talking about the obsession with practical subjects, thus leading to a lack of appreciation of education and academics in general, then I agree, there is such a tendency. However, I think such a tendency is global in nature. Our national obsession is no more than what I’ve seen here in California, where almost every other student wants to be a pre-med or pre-law or asks what’s the most lucrative major.

What do you guys think of my situation? Other than doing well for A Levels, do you think its a good idea to resit O Levels(not sure if i can do that?) or maybe take AP? Anyway, any idea where i can take AP in Singapore?

limnieng: Cannot Make It lah. You dunno wad CMI is and still call yourself Singaporean? Terrible lah. You den CMI lorzz.

Valour: Don’t retake O’s. You’d have to do it as a private candidate and spend 200+ per exam. Are you female or male?

To take AP you need to contact your school AP administrator/another school’s administrator if your school doesn’t have. What subjects are you looking to take? Not all test centers offer all the exams (for ex, my school offers Studio Art but not Macroecon) It’s like 300 bucks each. Be forewarned.

Don’t try too hard. Concentrate on your ECs rather than grades. It’s too late for the latter now.

“It’s just not a very intellectual forum. Hardwarezone is worst- People discuss about ivy, duke, chicago in CC forum, they discuss about NUS/NTU/SMU and SIM external degrees.”

The last I checked, ivy, duke, chicago doesn’t breed such snobs. I must have been mistaken. I guess the people on Hardwarezone weren’t that wrong when they said this thread was suffocatingly filled with the stench of elitism.

If there is anything my education has taught me, it is to treat all other human beings with due respect. I’ve seen no sour grapes at Hardwarezone specifically towards ivy, duke, chicago graduates, and warnings on that forum towards certain overseas universities are most of the time valid in the context of the question (often asked with respect to singaporean employers).

Yes, your station in life might have afforded you the luxury of not having to think about jobs and salaries, but there are people out there who have responsibilities to bear.

You talk about nus/ntu/smu being vocational schools, and yet your education seems to have not done any better in terms of instilling humility and character building.

Hah ha…CMI-Cannot make it…I know the expression and the Singlish nuances and colloquailism implicated by it. I just didn’t realize it has been elevated to the level that it merits an acronym.

However, I would refrain from using the term to categorize a group of pple as ‘CMI pple’. Not only does it sound derogatory and reeks of bigotry, it also portrays the user as an ‘elitist’ for formulating the dichotomy of citizens into ‘can make it’ vs. ‘cannot make it’, maliciously segregating and devaluing fellow Singaporean, and easily leading to an adversarial situation which is neither productive nor warranted. Case in point? Read previous post on

“Interesting” thread on STOMP regarding overseas universities vs NUS/NTU/SMU: NUS/NTU/SMU > foreign U??? - Talkback

Well said! preciouspurple11!

I would have liked to word it as strongly as you did, but being in CC long enough has taught me that it’s sometimes more productive to save ‘face’ for others, lest they break from a bruised ego.

haha. how ironic coming from you.

Screwitlah: Please explain your sarcasm/antagonism, if you have valid justification. If not…it is not appreciated.

“Please explain your sarcasm/antagonism, if you have valid justification. If not…it is not appreciated.”

I think you have just proven the point you were trying to attack.

fiona: any other way i can cover up my O levels? Another other form of tests i can take? Im really thinking of either O levels or AP :D

???

How does my request/statement prove anything!!! Really…I’m very confused by this line of reasoning. I’m not attacking anything, I’m just pointing out that screwitlah’s unprovoked sarcasm/antagonism was uncalled for. If he could explicate his reaction justifiably, it would be understood and accepted.

There is a big difference between rationally arguing your point of view versus ad hominem attacks! If asking for justification against an ad hominem attack is negatively portrayed as a knee-jerk reaction of a bruised ego, then there would only be 2 viable recourse:

1) weather the invalid insult like lambs to the slaughter; or
2) respond with a corresponding ad hominem attack.

Option 1 would be my recourse if I think the antagonist is beyond reasoning and beneath my attention (which I don’t think is the case here); Option 2 just degenerates into name-calling.

No, this has nothing to do with ego, it’s simply asking why an ad hominem attack is thrown in my direction.

PLEASEEEEE for the love of God do not take O levels. Thankyew.

AP…Well, depends on what subjects you want to take. AP Bio, for example, is fully covered in the A level Bio syllabus, while AP Physics C is calculus-based and thus A levels does not cover it. So you might have to self-study more depending on the APs you want to take. My RJC friend took a whole bunch of APs (like MacEcon and MicEcon and History) so if you’ve questions about self-study I can direct you to him.

It’s worthwhile to take APs because colleges do grant credit for APs, while getting credit for A levels is more difficult.

However… I’m not sure how colleges will consider APs for admission in the context of an A level candidate. Probably it gives a boost, but few people in Singapore take APs, although many people can score well. So it’s difficult to compare among Singapore AP takers and Singapore non-AP takers, you know what I mean?

If you need more help on APs, add me on MSN: eternalised AT hotmail DOT com

Thanks fiona! :)

Well I’ve always thought AP were easy but after you told me how AP is similar to A Levels in terms of the amount of content, Im shockeeeeed :o

I think I’ll just focus on my A Levels. Btw, how is NUSHSM&S? :)

Hmm im just curious why u think taking Os is not a good idea? Surely my results prevent me from getting into good US uni?

Possible not to include O level results in common app?

fiona_: if i am not mistaken, most colleges grant more credits for Alevel than AP

Valour: I don’t think so. They would want to see some hard scores.

Does anyone have a list of top US colleges which accept O level? I dont wanna sit for A level exams…T_T

As far as I know, only Purdue accepts O-levels.

The top universities (Ivies+2 and equivalents like Chicago, Berkeley, etc…) basically require A-levels or equivalent (like IB or sufficient AP exams) from Singapore I believe. Only in the rarest of cases, like someone with an International Olympiad or ISEF medal, would the top universities even consider accepting you with A-levels.

frankchn: Im quite curious since many J1/J2s managed to get into their uni way before the A Levels results… How can it be ? :o
