I am afraid that they will reject my application as I might not meet their english language requirement. Although I am taught in schools with english as medium of instructions

Thank you Fiona! so usually what is the benchmark to exempt TOEFL using SAT scores? I am still hoping to take SAT instead of TOEFL

Reject your application-which schools are you applying to? In any case, your SAT score is quite lousy for top schools. So I’d really think submitting TOEFL would be better (for ex, MIT will consider the better score, for which TOEFL would be better for you) So if you’re applying to competitive schools, I’d advise you to submit TOEFL as you can definitely get a good score.

Benchmark varies from school to school. Reed College, to which I’m applying, has a benchmark of 600 CR/W. What schools are you applying to? Usually it will be stated somewhere on the website.

Well, good performance on AP English courses (which seem to be fairly common in Singapore now) earn exemption too yes?

Umich, I guess i really have to take SAT1 and TOEFL again. From what i heard is >=650 in CR will allow me to be exempted from TOEFL.

Depends on schools. Most (U of Richmond, Reed) require minimum 600 (i’d put UMichigan in this group). Some 650. I know Amherst requires minimum 700. The harder the college, the higher the benchmark imo. But seriously with that score you need to take TOEFL or retake SAT.

Some schools, like Dartmouth, insists on “recommending” TOEFL, which I think is quite ridiculous and not to mention a tremendous waste of money. Wtv, i’m not sending we’ll see how it goes.

thank you confused_vnese! have to buy the blue book to practice again. any tips or guidance to up my SAT scores?

No, you fruitcake. You are wrong on so many counts. Go away.

I seem to recall UMich being rather stubborn on TOEFL requirements. In fact, I think TOEFL is mandatory for international students. It is waived only for high CR/W scores. Here, look at this site: [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Exams](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/intl/exams.php)

i gt admission into Purdue n UIUC. YEAH!!!

dartmouth DOESN’T need toefl

It’s not a requirement, but it’s recommended. I emailed the admission office asking under which circumstances, if any, can it be waived, and received a two-line response that D “recommends” TOEFL. But then again i’m a Vietnamese so my 1st language is not English

But if you have a 500-something CR/WR score you might as well take TOEFL.

What would be a good SAT Score for NUS?

nope, only for SMU.

I mean that NUS does not accept SAT, it’s only useful for SMU application

So,they don’t even consider it??So,how would they choose candidates from countries who write only SATS?

^ International applicants come under a different set of standards. You can check out the NUS admissions website for more details.

btw, for those of you who have been admitted, how did you write your “why XXX” essays? it seems that most americans write about their campus visits or family members who attended those schs?

i talked about Alice and how my learning started with that software which was developed in CMU

hi guys newbie here just wanna get some opinions of where to apply to, considering my very average grades.
