I’ll take “Oxymorons” for $800, Ken.
If only we could define one.
Oh never mind😀
Here’s a tip: set aside all your cardboard-based prejudices and head to the boxed-wine aisle of your local bottle or grocery store. What was once home to shelves of homogenous, lackluster plonk is now a globetrotting category, full of thoughtfully made options that rival their bottled counterparts from southwestern France, Sicily, California, and beyond.
So, some boxes may be worth breaking into. “Once you lose the negative connotation of wine that comes out of a box, you can just get to the juice inside—and usually it’s pretty good,” says Tilden. “Give it a taste before you start knocking what’s inside.”
I stand corrected of my pre-conceived notions… at least until I explore these options. Thank you!!!
(I’ll also give feedback.)
PS: I may use this as an excuse for a party… boxed wine tasting with a poll. I used to do blind tastings and polls in my 30s (long, long ago) and it was fun to have the reveal where a $20 bottle was ranked as high as a $100 bottle. Great fun and ways to identify hidden gems.
It could be fun coming out of dry-January. Haha
In the past I have bought a box of wine at our co-op. Natural Origins Domaine Bousquet. It wasn’t bad. 3 liters a bit under $30.
I finished my last sip of bourbon from a 60+ year old Jefferson Cup 30 seconds before the clock struck midnight 2025. Let dry January commence.
Current situation…
How did you feel about those? We bought some to try and let’s just say they weren’t my favorite.
I’m not a stout fan, but liked Guinness Zero.
I think they are very close to the canned version of Guinness, but nothing like a Guinness on draft. I’m a Guinness snob, but these will get me through January. I don’t think there is another non-alc beer that comes as close to the original as Guinness 0 does.
Blanton’s Gold is a nice pour to ring in the New Year with!
It’s quiet in here. Dry January or the surgeon general’s new warning?
Too busy drinking…
See Trump 2.0 thread for additional explanation of increased drinking
We opened this bottle on Friday and are slowly working through it. I had a small splash today. Forget Trump 2.0, I had to babysit a toddler today!!
Not bad for a WA zin.
I have already reserved a table at a nice restaurant for February 1st, to celebrate the demise of Dry January.
Ketel One Gimlet up
Local oysters & calamari
A nice glass of Barolo
Slow cooked wild boar bolognese
Espresso Martini
I’ll nibble at my wife’s warm flourless chocolate cake with mint chocolate chip gelato, chocolate sauce and mint sauce
We’re on to St. Patrick’s Day, and there’s nothing the Surgeon General can do about it.
I had an awesome Mezcal cocktail Saturday night for the start of restaurant week. Mezcal, ginger beer, ginger bitters, peach puree and lemon juice. Sooo good! Sorry I don’t have a photo. I had oysters, a shaved Brussels sprouts salad, grilled octopus and key lime pie. And an excellent glass of white Bordeaux with my meal.
All of DH’s immediate family is staying at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA this weekend to celebrate his parent’s 70th anniversary. It will be anything but dry. My FIL is the one who taught me how to order and drink a martini (always gin, artic cold with a twist and an olive) in my early 20s. I guess I’ve shortened my life but am looking forward to the bar in heaven where they keep the good stuff.
