Sister is already in Berkeley, but got her application canceled.

Two weeks into Berkeley, my sister was regularly attending classes. But just today, I found out that her application was canceled and she can’t attend her classes! This has already happened for a week!

She called me about this problem. She has until the end of the week to exit her dorm. She says that she can’t re-enter UC Berkeley, but she can at least return to UCSC, her original school.

As her brother, I can really use some advice here. I have no way of picking her up and my parents just left on a business trip for two weeks.

Was she a transfer student? Why was her application cancelled all of a sudden…? I don’t know how/when the fee due dates are, but maybe it was because of that. Or she didn’t fulfill some major part of her “Berkeley contract” that she probably forgot about, like documents or records she needed to send in…?

Is the question you have about what to do in the week when she is out of the dorms but can’t get back to home because your parents are away? Have friends who will let her crash on the floor in their dorm room or apartment for the week? Your roommates okay with that in your room? That solves the place to live issue.

Possessions can be put into one of the storage businesses in Berkeley for a fee, just as one idea.

A couple thoughts. First, your parents should know about the situation so they can evaluate if maybe one of them should cut their business trip short to come home now (your sister should tell them NOW). Second, I’m not sure what the issue is … storing the stuff? getting the stuff to UCSD? getting your sister to UCSD? A bus could get your sister and some vital stuff (cloths & computer) from UCB to UCSD … the rest of the stuff could probably stay with friends until a plan is set up … frankly it would probably be cheaper to ship the extra stuff home than someone traveling up and back to pick it up? Where do you guys live and how did your sister get to school?

Parents are a no go. I can’t reach them as they’re on the other side of the world in Asia. I can drive to Berkeley as an emergency though. So I should be able to pick her up. We live in Santa Clara.

My sister informed me that she can live in her roommate’s dorm.

But I find it more convenient if she could just STAY there. Is there anyway to get her back in?

well you have to explain (to us, among other people) why her application got canceled in the first place. If you don’t know the answer to that question, she should be trying to find out herself.

Right; if you can find out where the problem is, you can see if you can correct it. That way, if it’s easily correctible or a misunderstanding, you won’t even have to worry That’s scary, if they can cancel your entire application because of some small thing…

It seems like the OP isn’t trying to solve the problem of cancellation. And from the sister’s actions, it seems like she has something to hide (not contacting family for a week). So I’m assuming it’s some kind of dishonesty in the app etc.

If she can go back to UCSC, I suggest that she take a semester off, go home/travel a bit. And then enroll back in UCSC in the spring

As for picking her up, I suggest that you just rent a zipcar for a day or something and have her stuff put into storage until your parents get back.

There are three options on why her admission was cancelled:

 1. She gave false information on her application
 2. She did not pay registration fees, and thus classes were dropped.
 3. She made a serious violation of school policy on campus.

So, which one is it 1, 2, or 3?

the comment early on in the thread that she would not be able to come back to Cal impllies it is not alternative #2, but some kind of an ethics or policy issue. This early on, even blatant plagarism in a class would result only in F in that class, not ejection, so my bets would be on #1 but we don’t know, of course.

There are several options for 3:
3a) Vandalizing or stealing school property.
3b) Drug trafficking
3c) Rape/sexual assault/prostitution
3d) Defecating off the balcony of a high-rise building
3e) Possession of firearms
3f) When you get back your exam with a C+ grade you slap the professor in the face and say **** you, what the **** is this?
3g) Post hate speech on YouTube toward Asians.

So, which one was it?

I bet it was (3d)

Option #2 seems like the easiest problem to fix…

The other ones though… lol

3g won’t get you expelled.

3g won’t get you expelled, but LOL at that
Nah, that doesn’t happen at Cal…just at LA ;)

All joking aside, though, 3d) looks like a very strong contender

lol
EDIT: I just really don’t wanna start my homework

Jokes aside, my sister is still attending the same classes throughout the week while I try and figure out a solution.

So, why are you afraid to tell us why the application was canceled? That is the only way we can help you. Otherwise, this thread is useless.

^ … I disagree … there is no need for you to divulge why your sister’s classes were cancelled unless you want advice about trying to ger her reinstated. Your initial post was asking for advice about getting her home and to UCSD and neither of those questions have anything to do with the reasons her schedule was cancelled.

I do have one more (I think) relevant question. Is she planning on attending UCSD this semester? Or starting in the spring or next fall? If it is this semester things need to happen VERY quickly.

Read his second post. He’s asking how to get her admission reinstated. Therefore, we need to know what happened in order to provide advice.

I agree, we have no clue what your sister’s problem really is and can’t offer much advice. Has she told you everything? Honestly, it is her problem and not yours. She should focus on it while also going to class.
