What about Strasberg? I know they just brought it back, but I was just accepted to Strasberg and I’d love to know how many kids I’ll be in studio with.

My S top choice is Chapman Univ and then others in California. But I’m finding a lot of schools (Chapman being one) don’t let you audition until your Sophmore year. Is this common?

Northwestern U holds auditions for private voice lessons during the first part of the year, but delays auditions for their MT program (all Theatre and VP students can audition) until late in the freshman year – though I hear they may move MT auditions to earlier this coming year – and Theatre students don’t “choose” their acting professor (who they have for 3 years with a small cohort) until the end of freshman year.

Attrition happens in a lot of schools. I got my BFA in 92 at the University of Victoria. My class started out with 95 first years total in the department, with 60 enrolled in acting classes. Only 20 or so successfully auditioned into second year. Many changed their focus into design, education, directing, etc. only 35 graduated with a BFA when we were done, although the theatre historians got a BA and had a separate ceremony.

Ascharlau: That’s technically correct-- students can only audition into one of the two BFA programs (Theater Performance or Screen Acting) their sophomore year, but all theater majors start out on the BA track and are given the option to continue with this throughout all four years of their degree. It’s also worth pointing out that as a BA Theater student, you can declare an emphasis in Performance or Technical Theater-- so one still has options even if they don’t go for the BFA.

(Another point: Freshmen aren’t allowed to audition for the fall season-- which majorly bums me out, as the fall musical at Chapman will be Company, which is one of my favorites EVER-- but are more than welcome to crew shows, and are able to start auditioning in the spring. Just an FYI!)
