At audition today an Emerson faculty member said, at the parents info session, that they audition 400 for Acting BFA, amit 65, to yield a class of 23-24…

does anyone know how many people are accepted into the penn state BA Theater performance concentration? thanks

does anyone know what the acceptance rate is at Shenandoah Conservatory?

Here’s what I’ve been able to dig up, and am citing my sources. Of course, I’d expect some fluctuation in these numbers, but they are pretty consistent with my own observations at Tisch. YMMV! ;):

Jbehlend…you rock! I have never seen real numbers like this-- thank you!

When I auditioned last year in Chicago, my adjudicator told me that ETW and Meisner have increased their numbers a little (not by a lot, probably only 10-15 more people in each)

What I am still trying to figure out is at my D audition at Rutgers the weekend of Feb 18-19. The young lady conducting the audition process - a first yr freshmen with the initials “MMJ” said that she came in with 21 but only 18 are still with the program. She never explained what happened to the other 3. I thought this was strange and was very concerned after hearing that. I would understand 1 who might have left for various reasons - health, home sick, finances…etc…but 3. I also do not agree with the way they are operating their “so called call back/no call back policy”. Maybe they will get it together next year.

Ready4March - when my son and I visited Mason Gross last summer, we were told that the typical entering class is 16-18, but that there is some attrition, and they usually graduate 10-12 B.F.A. Acting students. I wonder if the figure of 20-21 included design/tech or other students, because I’ve always heard figures of less than 20 for entering students there.

They said they (Mason Gross) just had a large class this year.

Thanks stagemum for explaining.

R4M - Attrition in common in BFA acting programs. At Emerson a week ago, they said they expect about 10% to leave the program each year in the first two years - which gets them from about 25 to 20. Purchase is known for attrition, too. I suspect this is the case everywhere: 18 year-olds start out totally committed and then some of them… change their minds. New interests emerge, old commitments fade, life happens…

northdad Thanks. I am starting to understand this whole audition process. My D was not called back for Rutgers but they keep tellling her that she is still being considered (SO NOT TRUE). Thankfully she received a call back at her DePaul audition and we know for sure she is being considered for their program (hopefully she will receive good news next month). Also I love that they no longer have a cut program and will work with the 32 actors that they have chosen for their program. Fingers Crossed!

I agree with Northdad about attrition, but if three freshman really did leave the Rutgers/Mason Gross program before the end of the first year, that seems like a lot.

I agree that so many kids leaving BEFORE the end of the year, especially mid-semester, is alarming. But I wonder if the student meant 3 kids out of 21 didn’t come back for sophomore year. That seems kind of normal to me.

I’ve started a thread about this subject in particular - I think it’s worth discussing.

My sentiments exactly Njtheatremom and Emmybet. The young lady is still a freshman and for 3 freshman to leave so soon by early Feb. I thought - something is wrong here. I should have questioned her more on that but I didn’t.

The student who I talked to said that three students left either during or after the first semester freshman year (at Rutgers).

I just auditioned at UMich for Theatre Performance and they said they audition approximately 400 (on- and off-campus, including Unifieds), accept 45 with a wait list beneath that and expect a yield of 16-22 (16 being the professors’ ideal and 22 being the students’ reality), thought they said they would only accept 14, if they had their druthers.

does anyone know the numbers for Roosevelt, Hartt, or Shenandoah for fall 2012?

When my S received his BFA Acting offer from OU it stated “Each year the School of Drama auditions and interviews over 2600 students at approximately 17 conferences and national audition events.” Hard to believe unless they did a lot of mass auditions–my S’s was at Unifieds in Chicago.

johnsuz88 - OU DOES do lots of the large regional auditions. So they probably are “seeing” that many auditions. And they call people back to talk to them at those events. From those interviews students may receive an on campus callback. I believe during my D’s audition cycle they called back 125 to the on campus callbacks.
