Does anyone know if EI does not reach for CS, will the alternative choice be considered at SJSU?
@xiaobaomama2020
From the SJSU website:
** You must enter an alternate major on your application to SJSU. We will consider the alternate major for those applicants who did not meet the impaction threshold to their first choice major. We will only admit to alternate majors if there is additional capacity for new student enrollment in that major. For Fall 2020, the evaluation process to determine which majors have the capacity to admit applicants to alternate majors will continue through the beginning of March.
My son got accepted 2/28
Major: CS
SAT: 1530
CSU GPA: 4.36(?)
In State, not local
EI: 5018
Hello,
I had a question. My SJSU portal says “conditional admit self report” which was updated 2/28 (I applied for CS), but I didn’t get a formal message of acceptance. Is this something I should contact them about, or what until they send an email/message?
Also, how do I know if I was accepted for CS or my alternate major?
My son got accepted 2/28 (“Conditional (provisional) Admit – Self Report”)
Major: CS
SAT: 1470 (750 math, 720 English)
CSU GPA: 4.15
In State, not local
Both parents college grads
Like HighSChoolKid123, there was no message of acceptance in the SJSU portal and my son did not receive an email. I am also wondering if he was accepted for CS or his alternate major.
The portal looks like it is going to be down until later today.
@HighSchoolKid123 @sammy776
You have been accepted.
From the SJSU website;
** You have been conditionally admitted based on the self-reported information that you provided in your application. Conditional admission is subject to final verification of final transcripts. You must also complete all of the Terms and Conditions of your admission by meeting the intent to enroll deadline, submitting documents and meeting final admission and impaction requirements.
Thanks for the answer, but is this for our intended major? How do we know that versus it being our alternate major?
@HighSchoolKid123: If you did not get into your 1st choice major, then your acceptance would still be pending and your application would be on hold to determine if there is room for you in your 2nd choice major.
Does your EI meet the CS threshold of 4825? If so, then you are admitted to your 1st choice major.
To confirm, just call SJSU admissions.
From SJSU website: **The capacity to admit applicants to their alternate major is still being evaluated.
SJSU admits applicants to their alternate major only if there is additional capacity beyond those admitted as a primary major. This means that you might meet the threshold for your alternate major, but because there is no additional enrollment capacity to admit applicants to alternate majors, your application was withdrawn as unaccommodated.
I don’t think I met the EI for Computer Science (was 100-200 pts off). However, I chose Computer Science as my first major and I was admitted as of 2/28. Does this mean I was admitted to CS, or my alternate? Sorry if this is redundant.
@HighSchoolKid123: What was your alternate major? Did you meet the EI threshold for that major? If you know for sure you did not meet the CS EI threshold, then most likely you have been accepted into your alternate major. Your student portal should indicate which major but like I stated above, if there is any question then contact SJSU for clarification.
Thanks for the help Gumbymom. I will contact SJSU admissions for an official answer, since my portal doesn’t mention my major.
One last question, is there still a chance I could be accepted into CS if I don’t meet the EI?
@HighSchoolKid123: If you do not meet the EI now as a Freshman admit then you could try to change your major as a SJSU student. Not easy but possible. First confirm your major acceptance.

If CS is your definite major choice and you have a direct admit at another school, I would lean towards the direct admit school.
CS is a highly marketable major so although SJSU has a great program, there are many other schools where you can attend and be successful.
Decision is still pending for CS major. Anyone in the same boat? CA local with 1570 SAT and 4.0 CSU GPA.
I still haven’t found out. I’m not a California resident, maybe that has a role in it? Can someone explain when I will find out because I am getting stressed
D status is still Decision Pending. She applied for animation but 22 points off from the EI threshold. What are the chances she will get in to her first choice of major?
Accepted at CSUF and CSULB
@orugallu Decision still pending also. CS major. In state, but not local. EI is 4684.
When does SJSU typically send out rejection notices?
@HighSchoolKid123 @sammy776 and anyone concerned that they didn’t receive a formal admit notice check your “view my messages” in SJSU student center and there should be an admitted email there. My son was accepted in the morning and the email showed up later that day. As others have said it does not state which degree you were admitted to. Thank you @Gumbymom for the info regarding second choices. When my older son applied last year I remember reading a warning to choose your degree carefully because it is unlikely you would receive your second choice and it’s since intrigued me as to why they would offer a second choice if it’s unlikely you will get it and how do they handle the selection process especially for those who could end up below the EI for their first choice but above the EI for their second choice. Publishing the EI is very useful but many EI numbers flip flop each year high one year then low the next but I suppose this is only an issue for those close to the EI. Having read what Gumbymom posted those who still have an application pending are still being considered so hang in there and the very best of luck.
S got denied by SJSU (CS) this morning. The end!
My son got denied by SJSU for CS this morning. His stats are high and meet the EI, so we are a little confused about the decision. Has anyone with high stats that meet the EI been rejected with the “Application Withdrawn F20” message.
The message states: “Specifically, the combination of your official test scores and self-reported grade point average (GPA) did not meet the minimum eligibility index (EI) required for the intended major you selected on your application. Therefore, we must deny your admission to San José State University for the Fall 2020 semester”.
His stats:
SAT: 1490
Cal State GPA: 4.31
EI = (4.31 * 800) + 1490 = 4938.
Instate - not local
Minimum EI for CS is 4825
I’d appreciate some advice for our situation.
Thanks!
@clof2024 Log into your son’s Cal Apply and go to “My App” then “Academic History” then “A-G matching” to check his CSU GPA that was reported then go to “Status” and then “standardised tests received” to check which SAT scores were received by CSU. If these don’t match your data log into your son’s College Board account and look and see which SAT scores were sent and where. They don’t send all scores automatically you have to send each one. If everything matches up and was reported correctly then there’s been a failure somewhere. I’d suspect he did not correctly self report but if I’m wrong please let me know. I think you will be looking at an appeal. After you find out what happened I’d contact SJSU admissions ASAP for advice. Good luck.
