Does anyone have experience with this department? I tried researching the professors on Rate My Professors, but it did not yield many reviews (only 2).

Once you get a UVa email, you can look up courses and professors on www. thecourseforum. com It has tons of reviews by students.

Here’s what is on courseforum. Not nearly as many posts as other departments, of course. Ratings are from students and are out of 5.0

SLAV2360 - Dracula - one prof 5, one prof 4, another 3.3
SLFK2120 - Ritual and Family Life - 3.4
SLFK2140 - Ritual and Demonology - averages out to about 3.5
SLTR2000 - Eastern Europe through Literature and Film -3.7

Thank you charlieschm - that’s exactly what I was looking for!

I was a Russian Language and Literature Grad “back in the day”! Take any course taught by Julian Connelly. He is a fantastic lecturer/teacher in my view. His Nabokov class completely changed the way I interpret literature…

Thanks tennisq, will keep that in mind! What did you end up doing career wise.

Funny you should ask… I “talked” my way into a a two year management training program at a commercial bank. Ended up working M&A on Wall Street which just goes to show, one does not always need the Comm school to pursue finance! That said, I did take some business courses at Wharton undergrad after graduation to show that I was quantitative as some employers have their prejudices.

Very happy I had a great liberal arts education but also glad I pursued business/banking after undergrad.

I had a great experience with the Russian Language and Lit program at UVA. As a teacher, Connelly is top notch. Note: My son, a second year, is taking his Dostoyevsky course at the moment and is very pleased he took it!

thanks for sharing, tennisq! Sounds very interesting, and I will not miss Connelly.
