My no shoes house is in direct contrast to the way I grew up. We didn’t have that policy when I was a kid. However, my kids have retained the practice thus far for their dorm rooms and apartments.
I don’t take my shoes off till I take my bath. I am not a fan of walking around barefoot. My shoes are usually either athletic shoes or a pair of Toms. After my bath or in the morning I’ll wear ugg slippers. Once I get dressed my shoes go on right away.
I don’t wear traditional pajamas but a oversized v neck t shirt and sleeping shorts or pants. I don’t care for wearing a robe but I recently picked up a light weight waffle fabric robe from the Ugg sample sale. (A good deal of under $20) I bought it for when my D and her fiancé are visiting.
@abasket - I didn’t grow up taking off my shoes before going in the house. I didn’t raise my kids that way either and all my kids wear shoes inside. My siblings also wear shoes inside. My brother who is married to an Asian even converted his wife to a inside shoe wearer.
I don’t even like to be barefoot in the sand. I will sometimes leave my Teva sandals on at the beach. When H and I go sailing I leave my sandals on the whole day. I even swim with them on. My H on the other hand never wears sandals on the beach or on a boat.
A new adjustment for me is I’ve been taking three different exercise classes that the instructors prefer you be barefoot. It’s taken me time to adjust but I do take my shoes off for Pilates, Nia dance and for the stretching portion of my strength training class. 2 of the instructors feel that as we age our ankles are stronger if we don’t wear shoes all the time.
I’ve never walked around barefoot inside the house, always wearing slippers. However, my children grew up walking barefoot because they were too lazy to put on their slippers. In their homes now, my daughter and SIL go barefoot in the house, children barefoot as well though they wear socks with treads in the winter. My son and DIL either go barefoot in their house or with slippers though my DIL didn’t grow up this way as her parents wear shoes inside their house.
My H needs to have orthotic inserts on at all times so he wears running shoes reserved for indoors only when he’s home.
We have all hardwoods. Yes - definitely hard sole slippers! Sometimes I just use flip flops as slippers.
Bathrobe - I have one but rarely use it.
My dad forbade anyone to wear outdoor shoes in the house, including guests. We also had a clear, plastic runner down our main carpeted hallway, so I guess I just inherited that (not the runner). I’ve been mostly barefoot for the last 18 years. Thank you, Arizona.
Flipflops in the summer, UGG slippers in the winter. I never wore slippers until 5 years ago when my at-the-time fiance bought me a pair for Christmas. I didn’t think I’d ever wear them, now I’m not sure what I’d do without them
They sit by my bed and its the last thing I take off at night and first thing I put on in the mornings.
We don’t wear outdoor shoes inside, nor does anyone else I know. I didn’t as a kid either and I remember taking shoes off at lots of friends’ houses, too. So, if it’s the influence of mothers, then mothers in south Jersey were the same as mothers in Toronto!
Wearing outdoor shoes inside feels disrespectful to the inside floors (and the work it takes to keep them washed and polished) - I’ve got hardwood and sorta flagstone floors, so, slippers.
Didn’t like the wicked good slippers but found my favorites while in France, small manufacture, cool designs and styles (I use the “charentaise” style), keeps feet warm but not sweaty, not too expensive, and pretty unique. Honestly a great winter/holiday gift.

Mostly wore socks on carpeted floors, but socks get dirty in a millisecond on hardwood or stone.
^^^If you are washing and polishing your floors AND not wearing outside shoes in the house, how are your socks getting dirty in a millisecond on hardwood/stone???
Those are nice looking slippers on Rondinaud.
We have all hardwood floors. I take care of them but honestly not excessively…and when cleaning them they don’t seem overly “dirty”.
@abasket: this is a great mystery. Even the slippers’ soled slowly change colors.
… Well, an explanation may also be the fact the floors aren’t washed/polished every day…
I get it if the weather is wet, snowy or muddy, but, floors are floors. We wear shoes at work, in all other public places like stores, restaurants etc and don’t worry about disrespecting that flooring or carpeting. I have animals and always have, and they don’t take off their shoes to come into the house.
^This. Common sense says take off your wet snow boots at the door but sneakers, flipflops and other daily shoes are welcome at my house. I have both hardwood and (cold in the winter) tile. I wish I could say I"m good about cleaning and vacuuming floors but I’m not, lucky if it happens weekly and then its because of the cat hair. That being said, I don’t like a cold, sterile house and prefer feet on the coffee table-type socializing lol.
I can’t wait to take off my shoes. It doesn’t matter what the season. I love to go barefoot. I probably have about three different styles of slippers that people keep buying for me but I rarely wear them. I love a soft robe though.
What do you people who have the “no shoes indoors” rule do when you entertain? Don’t you ever have large parties? Do you make everyone take off their shoes for those?
Honestly, we always wore shoes inside and I had never even heard of the practice of no shoes indoors until I came to CC. Is it a northern thing? Since we don’t have snow and ice here in south Florida, maybe that’s why it’s so foreign to me.
I went barefoot indoors my whole life until I started experiencing plantar fasciitis about 15 years ago. Now it’s too painful!
I grew up in the Philadelphia area and never heard of this growing up. We did have mud rooms for kids to take off snow boots and wet jackets. I lived in Dallas for almost 30 years and never experienced a “no shoes” house, but I did experience some “no red wine” parties because of white carpeting. Priorities…
We never wore shoes on carpet. We kept slides (the plastic, slip-on type soccer players keep in their bag) next to the door. The children were young at that time, and I always worried about what germs I would be tracking in. Now, we have wood floors, and I’m older. My feet cannot handle walking on hard floors without shoes. The kids are adults, and I do wear athletic shoes in the house. I have an extra pair just inside the door, but I don’t always bother changing into them.
EDIT: We still use plastic slides when staying in a hotel. We even use them in the shower!
My feet are just weird. They’re short and wide, always cold, and need lots of support. Most shoes are uncomfortable. I usually wear my LL Bean Wicked Good slippers. I have the heavy duty sole and I’ve been known to wear them outside as well. In the summer, I usually wear an old pair of running shoes. I’d love to be barefoot, but my feet won’t let me.
I, too, have never asked anyone to remove their shoes in my house. If they’d like to, I’m okay with that as well. Its just not done around here (a snowy, rainy, muddy area at times). That’s what those heavy duty mats from LL Bean are for. I have hardwood floors throughout my first floor.I don’t wash them daily (who does that??) or even weekly and they look just fine.
I business travel a lot and don’t pack slippers. I walk on the carpets and bathroom floors. I have survived. I try not to think about it.
We don’t ask guests to remove shoes when we entertain, but we steam clean our tile floors weekly (no carpet).
Slippers(Uggs) in the winter, barefoot in the summer. Love my Uggs!! Robe, sometimes.
Growing up we wore our shoes in the house. I lived in Japan for 2 years when my children were toddlers and adopted the practice of not wearing shoes in the house while living there. It has definitely helped keep my carpet looking cleaner. I have never made my guests take off their shoes, however when my kiddos were younger they would point out that our guests were wearing their shoes in the house
We have hosted parties at our house. When my 2 oldest were in HS, we would have the swim team dinner at our house…approx. 45 teenagers. They would all leave their shoes in my foyer without me asking. Talk about a sea of shoes! Most of my kiddos friends just automatically take off their shoes.
I was invited to a Christmas party a few years ago. The hostess did not want her guests wearing shoes in the house so she had a holiday sock contest. Best socks won a prize. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
