I’m interested in both music performance( on bassoon) and linguistics( potentially business as well, probably a minor if at all,if only to be able to make a living depending on the future I’m still deciding). Ive looked for small liberal arts colleges that offer both but I haven’t been able to find one that matches my desires. I’m flexible on size but its preferably small.
Oberlin has a music conservatory … but it may be more intense (and selective) than you want.
It also offers a Linguistics concentration (not a major) … but the course coverage may be less broad/deep than you want. There don’t seem to be any courses dedicated solely to core subjects such as phonetics, phonology, syntax, or semantics (although these topics and related methodologies may be embedded in other courses).
You may face a similar lack of breadth/depth at some other LACs (even if they do offer Linguistics majors).
You’re likely to find more strong programs among selective/elite research universities such as Berkeley, Michigan, the Ivies, UChicago, and NYU.
If you do want a LAC, check out Pomona, Reed, Carleton, and Swarthmore.
Reed’s course listings seem to be much richer than Oberlin’s.
Lawrence University also has a music conservatory and its linguistics course catalog seems to be a little more extensive than Oberlin’s (although that doesn’t necessarily mean they offer all listed courses every year).
Rice is arguably your best bet for a small college (~4000 undergrads) with strong music offerings and a good linguistics program. It also offers a minor in business.
Hamilton certainly would be strong for progressive study of the bassoon and for economics. Their linguistics program (minor only) isn’t bad in topics such as phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax:
