SMU EA/ED Class of 2024 discussion

For everyone here that got in to Cox or had a child that got in:

Where does Cox stand in the list of business schools applied/admitted to?

Do y’all know what the requirements are for the discovery scholarship? I haven’t received an email so I’m assuming I’m not considered for it.

@nishnidh my D received the discovery scholarship. She had a 35 ACT(SS), 3.95 (UW) 9 AP and is a BIOL major

Congratulations to all who have been accepted and have received scholarships.

Just wanted to ask everyone, is SMU your first choice?

Just curious to see what percentage of students who applied EA and received acceptances and scholarships are likely to attend SMU versus go elsewhere.

My daughter would most likely choose UT Austin and definitely would choose Rice over SMU if she were to get in.

My DD also got the PS invite email yesterday.

To the parent that asked, in order to be considered for the Discovery Scholarship the applicant must be a prospective STEM major.

Regarding where SMU ranks in terms of choice, I think if my DD were fortunate enough to get a President’s Scholar invitation, SMU would be her first choice.

I like SMU, but am also applying to other good undergraduate business programs - so will see. Got the Cox BBA Scholar and Provost and the email for the Presidential - suppose that would be a game changer potentially. It sounds like Cox has become fairly popular and the new admit policy is interesting.

I dont know if i am a great fit though as I am unsure on the fraternity thing - i think wealth is a big deal there too - my family is wealthy also but I am not entitled to anything and they didn’t like that feel of the campus, although they also said it was the nicest campus they’ve ever been on.

Thanks for the reply. My daughter is very similar and even though she comes from wealth she is not entitled and is leery of the culture at SMU. I went there back in the 90s and never really fit in either and don’t want her to go through a similar experience.

That being said I have heard that SMU has become much more diverse and it’s hard to beat Cox as far as business schools go especially when you’re getting scholarships

@drjay - I think SMU has used heavy scholarship dollars to significantly upgrade the quality of students they are getting, and as a result, the student body is probably more diverse in recent years, so I am going to give it some serious consideration. Their curriculum looks pretty compelling, and its small enough that you can develop relationships with other professors etc.

I am also considering IU Kelley, Michigan Ross (deferred), Ohio State, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Florida. Was denied at Notre Dame.

SMU has the potential to become a top tier university, its already very good, but over time I think you’ll see them continue to move up the rankings - for example Cox made the top 20 in the Poets and Quants 2020 undergrad business programs for the first time.

DD accepted at Distinguished Scholar now received Meadows Scholar more money plus additional for travel or art endeavor. Does this mean she is not considered for Presidential Scholarship ?

Good question, yesterday my son received COX BBA scholarship in one email and last night received a separate email Inviting him to apply for Presidential. He also received Provost scholarship 120k over 4 yrs in initial acceptance. Good luck!

Congrats! It’s so cool when your child sees themselves as part of a school. My DD still has more auditions, but we are hoping she will choose SMU in the end.

Everyone I talk to about SMU Meadows School of the Arts says it’s a great place for artists and scholars. Lots of opportunity and faculty is very good.

Best wishes in the New Year !

denied, not deferred? sorry we were deferred, just trying to gauge. thanks

@CollegeMom70 denied, not deferred? sorry we were deferred, just trying to gauge. thanks

Did anyone get the email about applying for Hunt? I just got it, and already did the essays for Presidential etc…I don’t feel like doing any more essays lol…curious if that means no PS interview…

I also got an email about applying for Hunt. However, I never got the email about writing essays for the Presidential Scholarship so I’m certain that I’m not being considered for PS. I wonder if it was a general email or if it was sent to certain students? Not sure if it indicates an interview or not

Also received email about Hunt, but was never invited to apply for PS. Makes me think the Hunt email was sent to everyone who was accepted.

Interesting…i guess will see…

also rec’d hunt email today…i fall in the academic range they mentioned to qualify, but imagine most admits do. didn’t get presidential email.

DD received portal acceptance along with everyone else. Very surprised at the time that no mention of any University (merit) aid. Thought she was a strong candidate. Then got emails for Discovery Scholarship and email that I assume is what everyone is referring to as the Presidential Scholarship ā€œessayā€ email - to write 2 x 150 word answers for 2 classes? Also got the Hunt email.

So emailed Counselor who resent the big red packet and in there was the Provost. Tonight got an email cc’d to parents that she has been accepted into University Honors Program. Will finish up Hunt application this week.

Received invite to apply for further scholarships and the hunt leadership program. Provost scholar.
