SMU EA/ED Class of 2024 discussion

Did everyone already receive the red packet? My son received notification for EA almost a month ago and the Second Century Scholarship, then later in week was admitted as Business Direct but still no packet?

Is SMU worth 40k a year after scholarships? I’m surprised the BBA Scholars only get 5k…Is that the maximum awarded?

BBA Scholars is only $5k/year. What are the other options? What are your in-state options? Remember to add about 3% increase per year for the next 4 years too. That said, I imagine that SMU treats the BBA Scholars very well. Looks like a lot of perks.

There’s still Hunt Scholars and maybe President’s Scholars awards to be passed out but I’m assuming they’re very competitive.

@zipdog - that’s what I’m trying to figure out - other good undergrad b schools with scholarship can easily be under 30k. SMU smaller campus though i suppose.

I have twin sons who both got provost & bba scholar at smu. We are native texans but have lived in philly for the last 4 years. One of the boys applied to hunts & both were invited to write a couple of extra essays for presidential I assume. We are waiting to hear from UT… we are thinking to try for tx residency after the first year at UT by buying an apt. in their name etc. One of the boys got into pepperdine with 36k scholarship… also applied to usc & vandy

$40k/yr COA for SMU for business is a good value if you can afford it.

I did, on 12/23 in Florida…red packet.

It’s really hard to afford all of this… have the twins starting college next year & a daughter in her first year at uva law! We want to get biggest bang for our buck for sure!

@zipdog9 You still could try Pitt, Penn State, or Temple. In-state is about $35k. You still might be able to get merit. All three have excellent business schools. Pitt and Temple have business honors programs which offer nice perks. Your entire list of schools are OOS or private which is pricey. Not sure why you didn’t consider cheaper options?

I wouldn’t bank on Texas residency. It sounds nice but there’s a lot of ā€œwhat ifsā€ and moving parts. If that’s an option I would research thoroughly and put a plan in-place as soon as you hear from UT.

Maybe a GAP year for both?

@chmcnm Thank you so much! Excellent advice… the boys are both adamant about going back to Texas though! I have researched the UT residency, & I agree it’s not a guarantee…it’s too bad I lived there for 47 years, and the boys weren’t too interested in UT until we moved to the East Coast! Again, great advice, I appreciate it!

My USPS Informed Delivery shows a white business sized envelope with the return address of SMU Office of the President. Anyone know what this could be? Postmarked January 7th.

Receiving a letter dated 1/8/2020 will check later

What was it?

what was it?

What was letter from President office?

Does anyone know when ED2 decisions are going to be released? Or when they have usually been released in years past?

I got the letter from the Presidents Office. It was just saying what SMU offered and hoped I would choose them.

Same re president letter…

I got Provost, Discovery, and the Presidential Invitiation.

@h8annah my son received the Provost and Discovery scholarships and would be in the engineering program too. He was asked to apply for Presidential and turned in the requested essays. Can I please ask when did you receive the invitation to interview for the Presidential Scholarship via email or mail? Not sure how and when exactly they notify who they are going to interview. We have a lot of problems with our mail. I am hoping if he was invited to interview that there would be an electronic notice as well on the final decisions.

I can say for people that are wondering about SMU, our daughter graduated from SMU a few years ago but she was not in engineering. She had a wonderful experience at SMU and found her professors engaging and caring. It is a wonderful school from our previous experience.
