SMU EA/ED Class of 2024 discussion

My guess is that “Presidential invitation” means an invitation to write the essays, not an interview invitation. I’ve looked at older threads and it seems as if the interview invitations come out around Valentine’s Day, interviews are in March, and final decisions are made in April.

@jmdpdheieio @“Texasparent1720!” it was the invitation for the additional essays, which was due by the 10th!

@jmdpdheieio and @h8annah thank you for the information.

@zipdog SMU is definitely worth $40k total COA. Room and board is top notch. My wife is a professor and regularly does undergrad research and projects with undergrads. She also writes lots of rec letters for grad school.

I recruit at Cox and Cox Scholars are like BHP at UT except small classes throughout the university.

@tristatecoog Thank you! I have twins so it will be like 80-90k a year at SMU!!! Plus we have a daughter in her first year at uva law… We are very grateful for scholarships they have gotten, but a Hunts or President’s would be optimal. Our other options are UT, A &M & one received a nice scholarship to pepperdine which would be a good fit for him. One of the boys is waiting to hear from USC & Vandy also… all very expensive indeed and probably not as much in scholarships! I went to Highland Park High School & love the area around SMU though!

Are students who applied regular decision considered for the top level scholarship opportunities (ie. Presidential)? The website says all merit opportunities are possible, but reading through this thread it appears that invitations to apply and even deadlines to submit essays have already happened?

I believe it’s EA only.

Does anyone know the chances of getting into Cox after being deferred? I was admitted into SMU EA with the second century scholarship ($20k) and have a 33 ACT, student body vice president, as well as junior class president last year, IB diploma candidate

Can anyone give an idea as to how big Greek Life is down at SMU? Am BBA Scholar/Provost scholarship and a girl from my high school is leaving (along with other girls apparently) this week because they didn’t get into a sorority or the sorority of their choice? Is too bad if that is such a huge deal down there because the academics look pretty solid. Not sure that would be my cup of tea given all the wealth and privilege that’s on the campus already.

Must apply by Jan 15 to be considered for Presidential and probably Hunt too.

To get Hunt, you really need to have shown significant leadership and not just great academics. @Zipdog9 I know a former HPHS student body president and blanket award winner who got a Hunt. He’s now the president of his Christian frat and very involved otherwise.

@maileb01 I would say you have a solid chance. I believe Cox deferred quite a few this year because it’s the first year of direct admission. Show your interest to commit! Too late for ED2?

@DG I know someone that left Arkansas and transferred to TCU because they didn’t get into a preferred Greek organization. The decision to transfer is likely multifaceted and not solely due to getting into the preferred sorority. Cox is overrepresents Greek and Lyle is much less so. A minority of SMU students go Greek. If one isn’t inclined to pledge, there are plenty of “my people” on campus.

@tristatecoog would applying EDII guarantee that I am admitted to Cox though? I have already been accepted to SMU, so would applying EDII even be an option? I would definitely go to SMU if accepted to Cox, so I would have no problem agreeing to the Early Decision policy.

@maileb01 sorry I was confused was university deferral at somewhere like Tulane. Just show the admissions rep that you’re committed. However the school knows there’s high demand for Cox. You may have to wait a bit for them to sort out the yield.

Can someone please help me with some guidance on when ED2 Decisions will be released? I’m dying to know what it was in past years but can’t find the information anywhere!!!

@tristatecoog - likely to decline Cox, hopefully opens up a spot for you…

@DG good thing you had a chance to visit to inform your decision. I went to a public U for undergrad and NE private for MBA. DD has accepted SMU ED offer for liberal arts and I recruit at Cox. Best wishes!

For ED2, looks like no later than March 1 decision since it’s due Jan 15.

Congrats @tristatecoog - the connections will help down there!

@tristatecoog Is there a good placement on Wall street or nyc generally for smu bba scholars? Are there many attending Wharton & the like for MBA’s? I’m from Texas, but we live near philly now. My husband leans toward MCCombs, but I think the smaller size of bba scholar program is better. UT has a strong reputation up here, but the size is troubling for me. I went to UT law & the partying is super serious in Austin. I found it way worse than SMU honestly!

Look at the Alternative Assets program. It is the elite Finance Honors program.

Did everyone who was accepted get an email to apply for the Hunt Scholarship? Did not get Presidential email ( wasn’t expecting it as we know several previous Presidential Scholars and what that takes)

Hey guys! I was wondering if any of you guys who also got the presidential email for the additional essays would be willing to drop some stats!
