They also got an email to apply for additional scholarships, including Presidential… One got an invite to univ honors program & the other got an invite to hilltop scholars… both are bba scholars & provost @kaisky their scores/ grades are very close to yours… Y’all are all very smart! Good luck

the other has 34 act, 4.0 umweighted, nat merit commeded, 10 plus AP’s, all 4’s… Lacrosse captain & ecommerce business owner ( their school doesn’t rank but both should be in top 10; it’s a small school)

@Zipdog9 - i’m going to McCombs OOS over Cox, i suppose would reconsider if i got presidential - McCombs placement seems better and a ton of resources there. Hook em.

@DG Congratulations on UT McCombs! That is so exciting!

Does anyone know when FA packages will come out? I am a bit concerned about the ambiguous language on my son’s scholarship (“up to $25,000 per year”) because this doesn’t automatically mean $25,000/year, although he seems to think that it does. All other schools have given him a concrete scholarship number, so this language concerns me, as SMU will not be doable without that full $25k scholarship.

@Zipdog9 You’ve probably already seen the Alt Assets placement link but here it is anyway:

Directly out of SMU, the majority of positions are in Texas but there are quite a few in NYC and other money centers like Chicago and San Fran. Those aren’t all of the IB placements by any means and there are quite a few strategy consulting, marketing and big 4 acctg jobs too. Lots of entrepreneurial stuff too.

You asked about Wharton. I went to Columbia MBA and there were more SMU and UT grads from Texas than any other school. 1-2 Rice maybe. 125 undergrad schools in a class of 650.

SMU has ~300 Cox BBAs. Does McCombs BBA have 1000 or more? I believe the same firms that recruit at UT also recruit at SMU. When I worked in invt banking and at a Fortune 50 company, that was the case. Rice is a bit more elite per capita. I believe the difference is that over half of SMU’s students come from out of state. That combined with a higher average family incomes and similar incoming stats, they likely go to top ranked grad schools in the Northeast ($$) at a higher rate than a highly regarded public U with 90% Texans. Maybe like Emory vs. Georgia?

My experience is with a bulge bracket NYC firm. Wharton had its own HR rep and would fill 1/3 of the incoming class. Other than that, Ivies, Stern, Michigan and UVa had direct recruiting with strong referrals from Williams/Amherst/MIT/Duke, etc. The Houston office recruited at SMU, UT and Rice. That’s been 20 years so maybe things have changed dramatically.

@tristatecoog Thanks so much! Great info. I appreciate your input. One of my sons has been recruited by a couple of ivies for lacrosse, but they have gotten just too liberal for us. He has always loved SMU, the campus & people!

Here was a guy that I worked with on an IPO when he was at DLJ. Mike was an SMU grad originally from Denver. Went to Kellogg and formed his own firm after bulge bracket IB out of Dallas. There may be many UT examples like this but this is an SMU one.

IB and corporate finance is what I know but there are many other cool careers through great initial opportunities one will be prepared for at SMU. That’s a big reason why I’m sending my DD there this fall.

@tristatecoog Great success story! Thanks again… You really can’t beat Texas living in terms of taxes, weather, people…

Hi! Current SMU President’s Scholar here. If anyone has any questions they would like answered i’d be happy to help. I love SMU and I know there was a bit of confusion surrounding the program and what exactly it covered when I was invited to interview.

Although it is to your advantage to apply EA for scholarship, the Presidents and Hunt program consider regular decision applicants as well.

@Steglitz90 my DD got her FA detail in the mail about a week ago. She was an ED applicant so maybe they get theirs a bit earlier. The FA office seems pretty approachable. Good luck!

@ponyupdallas could you please describe the interview process for the Presidential Scholars Program. When were you invited to attend the interview, and in general, what type of interview questions did they ask? Thanks!

I was invited to interview by mail on February 15th, but I think they recently changed the invitation to be through email. The interview weekend is a two day process that takes place in March. When you arrive at SMU you will receive a tour of campus and there will be a reception for the 60 or so candidates invite the first night. The reception is a time to make connections with other candidates and meet as many current President’s Scholars as possible in order to make yourself stand out. Your interview will take place sometime the next day and consist of a current PS, an alumni PS, faculty, and PS program staff, usually 5 or 6 people total. There is also a group interview with a few other candidates. Once you are invited to interview weekend you are on pretty much an even playing field with the other candidates and it does not matter what your stats are anymore, your high school accomplishments are just what gets you the interview. The interview portion of the weekend is what decides whether you are awarded the scholarship or not. The questions they ask are mainly about what you answer in the questions they send you before you come to interview weekend and how you hope to contribute to SMU. I highly recommend visiting the PS website and looking at the bios of current president’s scholars and what their goals are to see where you fall. Best of luck to you!

I recently was notified that I got into the Hilltop Scholars Program (got accepted EA with Provost and Cox Business Direct, haven’t committed yet as I’m still weighing all of my options)
is there anybody who is/was in HSP or knows a lot about it who can help explain all of the benefits and stuff like that

Previous post about HSP

Congrats on your accomplishments, @joshky. Do you mind sharing where else you are looking?

@joshky - same here, trying to learn more about hilltop, doesn’t seem like huge deal but trying to get info…
