SMU EA/ED Class of 2024 discussion

what about univ honors program versus hilltop scholars? does anyone know the difference? one of my son’s got hilltop & the other univ honors? Has anyone heard on president’s scholarship or hunt yet? We haven’t gotten anything other than writing supplemental essays. Maybe those essays were for univ honors or hilltop?

@Bwildered1
Thanks, right now I’m still waiting on my UT McCombs decision, but I’m not expecting much given that I’m not auto admit and I know many more qualified people who have not gotten into McCombs
my other top choice is TAMU as I got into their engineering honors program and they give very generous National merit scholarships
I’ve also got into UTD CS with a scholarship but I’m probably not going to go unless things fall apart elsewhere
I still have some RD decisions for reach oos schools that are yet to come out (Boston U, USC), and i just got deferred from Northeastern as well; given that I’ve gotten into some pretty solid schools already I won’t really be that bummed out if I don’t get accepted though, but obviously I would still like to get in lol

@Zipdog9 I think hilltop honors is for freshman year only. Hunt interview notification came out mid February last year.

@chmcnm Thank you! I’ll have to get the boys to do a little research on it as well!

I am wondering the same thing. Anyone know?

@drjay71 Both of my sons got provost & bba scholarships… Only one of them has received his FA package…the provost is up to 30k a year & it is in fact 30k in the FA package, and the BBA is 5k & listed as such on the FA sheet. The " up to " language means equals. I think you can count on that amount each year for 4 years or graduation unless your gpa goes below a 3.0 I believe it says…

@Zipdog9 Turns out the “up to $25,000 per year” was $25,000 per year (Yay!). The need based aid is less than stellar, though & the bottom line price comes in over close to $15k over our EFC…

Did everyone who has been accepted receive an email (sent to parents and students) from SMU admissions today asking about their status and if they are:

  1. planning to submit deposit
  2. still considering & need more info, or
  3. no longer considering SMU, made other plans?

Yes…i think they deferred a lot of folks, and trying to get a handle on numbers. Not sure though.

That’s what I was thinking too along with today being the extended RD & EDII application deadline, so they would have a better sense of where they stand prior to reviewing & making decisions on those applications.

We didn’t get that email - weird. Maybe because he already signed up for Destination SMU? Anyone know the difference between Hilltop and University Honors? I am assuming University is more prestigious?

My daughter had already signed up for Destination SMU as well and received the email, so that doesn’t appear to be the difference.

@Steglitz90 … cost of college is outrageous! At least SMU does give a nice bit of predictable merit aid for test scores & grades.

@Davef2024 one of my twins got the uhp, and the other got hilltop… my understanding is that Hilltop is for freshman only while uhp goes all 4 years. The one who got uhp has slightly higher test scores & grades… both programs look interesting!

We didn’t get the email asking about attendance and have not decided yet, but at least one of my twins is very likely to attend, hopefully both!

We didn’t get an email, either. SMU is definitely in the top 3 of my son’s choices, but he has still to hear back from a few places in March.

Thank you @Zipdog9 . The reason I was asking about the different honors programs was my son got Hilltop but also invited to apply for the Presidential scholarship. If he did not get University Honors and it is more prestigious, he might not get invitation to interview. But I might just be overthinking and should just let it happen. LOL

@Davef2024 I know I try to think of things like that too! My kids think I’m crazy, but it’s just the cost that makes me that way!! Both of mine were invited to write the essays… the difference between mine is mainly the one who got the hilltop is more entrepreneurial, leadership- type while the uhp is more academic & cerebral type, but their grades & test scores are virtually identical. So, I think either of the programs could be one for a presidential scholar! Best of luck!

@Zipdog9 wow good insight! My son is totally the entrepreneurial type, so hopefully that is the difference. Hope to see you guys on the Hilltop!

One question about financial aid: If my son is sure he will attend SMU, should he wait to respond until he gets his FA package? Has anyone heard if they are more generous if they are trying to sway you in their direction?

@Davef2024 There is absolutely no reason to commit before receiving and evaluating the financial aid package.
