Snow Dwellers - Is A White Christmas On Your Wish List?

A question/poll for those who live in spots where snow on the ground is a possibility in late December… is a White Christmas on your wish list or do you not need or want it??

Add in IF you will likely have it or not!

As someone who lives in Ohio but honestly does NOT like snow, it always boggles my mind how many “need” a White Christmas. Funny cause that component is not on my checklist for the holiday season at all!! As a seasoned worrier when anyone is traveling I don’t want that worry. It creates a boot mess. It’s another job (snow removal) to tend to at an already busy time.

Monday’s forecast is calling for mid 50’s - I’m all over that in a positive way! How great that we can get together and maybe even go for a walk in not freezing weather! The snow will eventually come! I don’t need or want it now!

Which camp are you in - or which camp do you crave if you’re not in a snowy climate - snow on the ground at Christmas or no??

If there is snow on Christmas…fine. If not, fine. The people who really care about this are the skiers!

I know plenty of people who are NOT skiers but want “even just a dusting” to create that Norman Rockwell scene I guess?! :woman_shrugging:

I love winter, especially when there is snow on the ground. Full disclosure that I am a skier, snow shoer, and lover all all winter weather activities.

But alas, the forecast in my neck of the woods for xmas is 50 and rain - bleh! I’d rather it be 30 and snowing any day!

I live in an area known for cold and snow and we are not having a white Christmas this year. I admit it pretty, but we will have plenty of snow in January/February.

I’m surprised that many people where I live are disappointed in the warmer weather here. One even called the temps (in the '30’s) not “real winter”.

Isn’t a snowbird someone from the north/colder area who resides in the south/warmer area for the winter? When I saw the title, I thought you were asking everyone in Florida for the holidays if they were hoping for snow. :joy:

Me too!

Ok, people seem to be focussing on word choice for the thread title - listen folks, just trying to create some content here!! I chose “snow birds” because while they leave the snow they had to come from a place that normally has it.

You all can chill now, I changed the title.

Northern Michigan.

Snow on the ground at this moment but I expect it to be gone on Christmas Day. Warming up into the 40’s

When you get a lot of snow, your mindset changes. Snow that doesn’t leave is fun! People are out, snowmobiling and skiing. Riding their motorcycles on the lake, ice fishing. It’s not like places that get some snow and then it melts into a gray icy mess. No it’s white and fluffy and wonderful.

Can’t wait until it gets cold and we can do things.

Now March is gray and melting and miserable. That is not fun!

I find that most people who wish for a white Christmas are not the ones shoveling/snowblowing the snow. Now plow drivers, they make good money during storms, so they probably wish for snow.

Lol, I can’t agree more with the first part of your post!!

100% agree with this. I CAN’T Stand cold rain. I much prefer snow any day to a cold rain.
I like snow on Christmas but fine if it’s not!
I worry about my travelers in the rain and the snow. Let’s face it, I’m a mom. I always worry about my travelers.

This is very much like Minnesota. People embrace the cold and snow, look forward to skiing (both kind) snow shoeing, ice fishing, etc. There are also a lot of winter activities/festivals indoors and out.

This is the thing when you get quite a bit of snow.

The store never have a run when a storm is forecast. No panicking. The next day, people are out and about.

It’s very rare not to get out the next day. Maybe early the next morning but usually the plow comes by before noon. School can be canceled but it’s a day event, not a multiple day event.

Private plow drivers rely on the snow removal. It’s how they make money. They have plows on their trucks and get to work. My sister lives in lake effect zone and the plow is there before she leaves for work at 5.

We have a two stage snow blower. All of our neighbors have one or a plow on their riding lawnmower. Getting out and getting the snow removed takes my husband less than a half hour. It’s really not a big deal. Or difficult.

All that snow means you get to play in the snow.

Like I said above, your mindset changes.

We occasionally get snow in December. This is our seventh Christmas in this house. We had snow on Christmas here twice, but probably not enough to qualify as a “white Christmas,” which meteorologists define as at least an inch of snow by some time on Christmas Eve. No snow on the forecast this year. Not a snowflake!

I wish! I’m dreaming of the day I can convince DH to extend our time in Maine to cover the holidays. For me, no snow = no Christmas. “Christmas” in AZ is depressing as heck.

This is Christmas (our old house in the Boston 'burbs):

This is not:
Cactus-Santa Hat

I loved shoveling snow, scraping ice off my car windows, and watching my breath freeze. DH grew up in southern CA. He’s such a wuss.

Not our plow drivers. It’s just my coworkers who work 12 hour shifts instead of 8. And unless it happens over a weekend and they aren’t salaried workers, they might not even get overtime. They definitely don’t wish for snow!!

One year it snowed on Xmas and my coworker had to work - engineering office are scouts so we don’t make anything extra. So he had to work on Xmas with a little kid at home and Xmas is his bday!!! He was not amused.

I used to have to work the 7pm-7am shift as a dispatcher in an office when there weren’t any smoking bans. The office was FULL of smoking people. And two years I was very pregnant and allergic to smoke. I’d lose my voice. It was awful!! Fortunately I was taken off duty several years ago

It depends…after a few nights of working practically 24 hours, they don’t wish for more snow!

I like looking at the snow…on the grass. But I want the roads, my driveway, and any walkways to be dry. No ice or snow.

I think it’s pretty to have snow…to look at. But I’m not a snow sport or winter outdoors person. But sit by a fireplace and watch the pretty flakes come down…fine.
