Snow storm? Really?

Easy home-made ice melt:

1 gallon water
3 drops dish detergent
2 ounces rubbing alcohol

It’s not as effective as the commercial eco-friendly, pet friendly stuff but it’s a pretty good alternative in a pinch.

When we were trying to get out after the 2003 storm (my 40th birthday!) and the car got stuck, I kept thinking about that bag of mulch, buried under snow in the backyard, that would be great to throw under the tires for some traction. If you have some mulch around, keep it near the driveway.

In the end, we used flushable kitty litter and it worked great!

S2 finally let me know that he’ll be at work til about 2 in DC, and that the basketball game has been moved up to 3pm. Hopefully he gets out in enough time to catch the last bus home around 5. If not, he’s prepared to walk 2.5 miles, or maybe he can catch a cab or Uber (if you can trust those drivers to be able to drive in a couple of inches of snow.)

He’s stubborn, so I suppose that’s the best I can ask for from him.

He’d also ask for bacon & cookies if he were home. Maybe it’s a guy thing.

What is it with boys and bacon? My son talked me into making a “bacon weave” over the holidays. Ugh I never saw so much fat in my life. He thought it was the greatest thing and D and I though it was gross.

Disposable snow shovels? I can never understand why there are always news reports showing people out buying snow shovels! We are in a prime snow area, so it’s not like snow is a new concept around here. We have about 5 snow shovels of varying sizes and hefts in the basement. We MIGHT replace one every 5 years or so. Do people just throw them out at the end of the season??

As Homer Simpson says, “Mm, bacon”. Or was it,“Mm, beer?” I’m with the boys on the bacon. Was kinda hoping I’d get stuck here. Nice hotel with plenty of good food, wine, and awesome bacon. The manager said all the employees are just staying at the hotel for the weekend, and that they are well stocked up on good food and alcohol, so nobody would go without. She said that they will be totally full if the area loses power, since they have a generator, and families will come stay there instead. So consider doing that if you lose power and you’re suffering!

So busdriver…does that mean you are NOT stuck in VA?

A couple in my mom’s building in Florida flew on Thursday back to NJ for a wedding on Saturday but the weddings been canceled. What a nightmare for the bride and groom.

NJ SAT testing for this Sat is cancelled at most centers.

@busdriver11 Which hotel are you at? I’m about 10 miles from Dulles? I’m sure all the hotels around here are like that this weekend.

The hotel I was at was the Westin, Dulles airport, but I am now boarding a flight out of DCA. Not a snowflake in sight yet. The Westin said they still have some rooms, but not for long. Since I was only booked for last night, knowing my luck, everyone would be sold out, so it would be either a roach motel or the airport!

But looking good now.

“look out your window to see what happens” Yeah, frustrating. Boston may be spared, though no one’s sure about south and west of the turnpike, the equivalent of DC’s “outside the beltway.”

What I heard about DC is that one reason schools were cancelled today is because they did have the salt trucks ready to go. ? Up here, where people like to complain a lot (we call it the #1 hobby,) they grouse about plows and trucks regardless of whether they’re out and about.

No. DC schools were closed because the storm is supposed to arrive before the end of the school day. That’s a recipe for disaster as the kids ride buses back home in the snow along with all the people heading home from work. Better safe than sorry as far as the kids are concerned.

Weather.gov has a nice interactive map, click on your area and get a blow-up.

Friend in Manassas just texted that it started.

Stafford, VA is getting teeny tiny flakes…

Jeez this is painful. Up for over eight hours just trying to get out of here, loaded on the flight, broken, off loaded, now back on. What next! I know what’s next, seated next to a really obnoxious woman!! Please… Stop… Talking!!

Edit to add, now we’re so delayed, it’s snowing. Delayed for deicing, obnoxious woman eating something really stinky! Shoot me now.

Good luck all, bye.

Centreville VA started snowing.

Lol, busdriver, do you hate being a passenger?

Snowing here now. What was interesting was seeing some kind of animal prints in the snow from the other night…something walked right up to my back sliding door and my garage door. Must have literally been looking into my kitchen. Its print was a circle with 4 claws…I’m guessing raccoon.

Oh, poor busdriver! Tell her she’s seated in the quiet car, like they have on some commuter railways. Hope you got out!
