Snow storm? Really?

Storm is moving faster than predicted. Odds are very high I will be the caregiver stuck all weekend with a client who only catnaps and needs help getting on and off commode every 20 minutes. I’m the overnight aide will call off since no one wants to end up with her.

Not the person I’d choose to be snowed in with.

I just received an email from my internet provider to warn us that it maybe down due to the storm. I think it would be worst than not having electricity - no emails, no internet, no TV or Netflix, and no work (remotely).

Snow started at 1:02 pm at Shady Grove.

DH flies out of Atlanta to Frankfurt tomorrow at 5 pm. Flight still posts as scheduled.

I have a battery operated TV that receives the new broadcast digital signals. I’ve used it twice just in time for the power to come back on  We have flashlights stashed all over the house and Rechargeable LED Power Failure Night Lights can be found at the grocery stores for $5 now

Don’t laugh at me for asking this. How do you get internet service without power?

Do it through cell phone. The cell towers all have backup power.

@Igloo,
One thing you can do is use your phone as a hotspot. I’ve done that a couple of times when our internet was out. It’s unlikely to work at the height of a storm (too much environmental interference for the 3G/4G signal to get through) but if it takes a day or two to get power back linking the two devices will give you a decent signal on your laptop or tablet.

I live along the bay in the high wind advisory areas. I’m fairly confident that the power will go out and since I’m in a less populated area I’ll be the last restored. With the generator we should be fine, and we have several gas fireplaces we can start without power. I have the important things…wine, chocolate and a new book.

“Lol, busdriver, do you hate being a passenger?”

Nah, I am a road warrior too, fly in the back all the time. But usually it’s in first class (thank you Delta), not in coach, in an RJ. I miss out on many of the crappy experiences, but I know the things that really annoy me. The shriek of, “Thank you, Jay-sus,” after the landing was a new twist.

However, any passenger related torture I endured is pretty trivial compared to what some people could suffer through with this storm. The headlines about bracing for a life or death blizzard are really scary. I wish everyone who could, would stay inside, have fun with their loved ones, eat cookies and drink good wine.

It sounds like KKmama will endure a special sort of misery. Can’t that woman get some adult diapers? She must spend her life going to the bathroom! I hope you are getting double pay for that.

Just saw an email from the plumber in MD about keeping snow cleared off of the heat pump and away from household vents. Sigh. I don’t think anyone will be at our place there until after the storm ends and the snow is cleared off the roads. Happykid is in Towson, and Roomie1 and Roomie2 have opted to hunker down with their families for the duration.

We have cold, but not much snow here in the Far North MidWest. Sending good wishes for swift snow removal to all in the storm’s path.

D’s plane from Florida delayed, then canceled, then uncanceled, and now trying to take off in time to catch a weather window. Nerve-wracking.

At one point she was like “If i get a plane to Philly, could you pick me up there?” I’m like, no. We live in North Jersey and the storm will be worse and earlier in Philly, which is close to 2 hours away.

On one hand really hoping they take off and beat the storm. Almost rather she got stuck till it passes, though.

We have been upgraded…again…now in the 3-5 inch snowfall range!

@busdriver11 --so when it was canceled the crew left for the hotel; now that it’s uncanceled they are waiting for them to come back. That seems really odd. Is that a typical thing to happen?

Garland, that’s very unusual. I suspect this is purely trying to get in that window that you mentioned. Otherwise, a cancelled flight generally stays cancelled, crew is gone. Severe weather may make for some unusual choices, though.

Garland, if your DD is in SE FL, let me know. I have a spare bedroom. It is,pouring here, which may be contributing to flight delays and cancellations.

Bookworm–thank you so much! Her H has family there, so I think they are ok. And it looks like they are going to take off now.

Busdriver11–she texted just a minute ago that the plane had cooling and heating problems and that’s why they were going to cancel, but then they changed their minds. This is all making me extremely nervous.

Actually, I’m going to be a basketcase till they land, now. :frowning:

Hugs to garland and to KKmama.

garland, if It’s any consolation, we took a flight in September that was delayed for the same reason. I hope if she takes off , it’ll be soon so you can relax. It is snowing in Cape May County now , but it is light
