Snow storm? Really?

People in our neighboring beach town are scrambling to find places to park their cars to keep them from being destroyed by floodwaters. They usually try to come over the bridge and park at the grocery store lot , but I just heard that it is full. We have two cars here at our house for friends

So on the United page it shows them as in flight, and a graphic of the flight path, right across the storm.

Dang. (and other words I can’t say.)

Re post #181 … I stand corrected. At least a foot with no end in sight.

We normally don’t have any problem with storms or rain, but once when sis had an old Mercedes parked on the street, it happened to flood right at that spot in the road and ruined the engine and car! It was a very freak incident.

Being on a snowy, icy road scares me and is not something I want to ever experience again. In grad school, we were once the last car they allowed thru before closing the highway. It was scary–lots of stuck and abandoned cars and it was tough to tell what was road and what was snowdrift. Fortunately the driver grew up in IL and was more familiar with bad weather driving than I was (or am).

Yippee! My loved one has avoided the storm and safely left DC and arrived at his destination far from the storm! Now, if I can get any photos sent to me, that would be awesome.

Garland, check flightaware …looks like they are past most of the storm  hugs. have done this song and dance with my kiddos a number of times… nerve-wracking to say the least…

Be careful if you have a fire. The accumulated snow can cover the chimney opening and not let the smoke out for several scary minutes. It’s best to start the fire early, even if you have to put it out at bedtime, so that the chimney is warm and snow doesn’t stick too much.

Garland, heating and cooling problems are purely a matter of comfort, not safety, so no worries there. I also wouldn’t worry about them flying over/around the weather, they have weather radar and avoid anything dicey. It’s pretty clear cut. I didn’t catch where she is flying into?

bus, I thought Garland said D was flying into EWR…

Oh, Newark. Well it looks like the snow won’t even start there until 8pm, and then it’s just snow showers, which is no big deal, at least for awhile. Nice long grooved runways.

The tops of the storm on the radar are only 25,000 feet, which is very low. They are probably much higher and can cruise right over it. I’d be worried about driving home, if the roads are untreated, but no worries on the flight.

Right now at Newark, aviation weather is 10 miles visibility, winds light and down the runway. Easy flying. At 9pm, visibility goes down a bit to 6 miles, with light snow. Still easy. At 11pm, the winds pick up a bit, still light snow. Around 5am, watch out, heavy wind and snow. The only problem with Newark, is that there can be delays for most any weather, however, more for takeoff than landing.

The flight from Florida should be non challenging, though I’m sure the crew is griping about being recalled from rest!

Watching all this from a weekend away in Dallas. S2 is home - enjoying himself for now - I’m just worried that he is going to lose power, and about our flight back on Monday.

On my way out to meet D for dinner in Boston. Not a snowflake aflutter here!

It’s official. The night aide not coming so I’m here for the duration. At least worship cancelled for Sunday so I don’t have to worry about missing my real job. Gotta find a better moonlighting job.

This will be a blizzard to remember.

I am at home as it is snowing outside. I was reading some interesting facts about the “Tomb of the Unknown Solder.”

Did you know that there is always a guard on duty 24/7/365 days/year no matter what the weather.

“Some people think that when the Cemetery is closed to the public in the evening that this show stops. First, to the men who are dedicated to this work, it is no show. It is a “charge of honor.” The formality and precision continues uninterrupted all night. During the nighttime, the drill of relief and the measured step of the on-duty sentry remain unchanged from the daylight hours. To these men, these special men, the continuity of this post is the key to the honor and respect shown to these honored dead, symbolic of all unaccounted for American combat dead. The steady rhythmic step in rain, sleet, snow, hail, heat and cold must be uninterrupted. Uninterrupted is the important part of the honor shown.”

KKmama, I’m sorry you have a hard night ahead, but if that were my loved one, I’d be glad you were there with her.

@busdriver, thank you for all your comments and explanations. Very reassuring to understand a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. SIL trying to fly from JFK to PBI, delayed because of the inbound flight from PBI. I gather they are having a lot of weather in Florida, too!

North of NYC, we have also had our snow total “upgraded” and the start time has been moved up.

@KKmama: Just relax. Hopefully your client will not be too much trouble. I guess the silver lining is that you’ll earn extra money. I hope you get a good night’s sleep.

@kkmama, hopefully it will be an easy night and you and the client will both get some sleep and you will have a bit more in your bank account.

Maybe counseling would be an easier moonlighting job than providing assisted living? I’m sure as a pastor you’re trained in counseling.

Momof3sons, if it helps, the rules are very specific as far as what kind of weather one can take off or land in. If it’s bad enough at your destination, you may not even be allowed to depart. You will have to divert to your alternate if it is not safe and legal to land. There are restrictions based upon aircraft, crew, and runway specific. If you are flying on one of the majors, both pilots usually have several thousands of hours of flight time. Combine that with the push over the years to be safe, and AirTraffic Control being more helpful in providing assistance, flying is extremely safe. I think people often think that the crews will will fly into bad weather if it’s there, and they will not intentionally. They can get in all sorts of trouble for that, even if they weren’t concerned with safety.

I don’t know about weather in Florida, it looks pretty decent. Good luck to your SIL!
