Snow storm? Really?

We are in MD and my son needs to drive to NY by Monday. I’m hoping to send him off tomorrow, but he’s now got both an eye and an ear infection. I’m hoping drugs work quickly and he feels well enough to drive tomorrow.

@1214mom - there are many walk in medical clinics in NYC if he should need to see a doctor while he is in NYC. Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks @oldfort. He’s going to Albany, but he can be seen there too. What I’m really worried about is him driving so far without feeling well. Hopefully the doc will say it’s fine. I think bc it’s his eye my son will pay attn., but he’s one who doesn’t always listen to what he’s supposed to do/complete treatment.

I am in NoVA and work for a business that does not ( cannot) close for a mere 8 or 10 inches of snow. The last time we shut down was in 2010 with 2 feet. I am fortunate in that I can work from home and my boss is very flexible with that.
What annoys me are the people on my FB feed who will not have to work on Friday (or maybe next week) who are gloating about this. I really feel bad for the police officers/firefighters/EMT’s/health care workers etc. who have no choice.

I think that the price of hotel rooms in fort lauderdale and palm beach just went up!

It seems like we are in the line for a messy mix of snow , sleet and rain. I am more concerned for what this is going to do to our area in terms of wind and potential for heavy flooding. We have a shop that is on a street that floods , however the last nor’easter we had didn’t bring water inside. During Sandy, we were located directly across the street and we had 4 feet of water inside….we also have two apartments upstairs from the shop …one tenant works for us . We know she plans to stay off island . The other tenants are relatively new and pains in the a@@…power will probably go out which means no heat.

I’m a huge weather geek. I love storms of any type-- last week I was fascinated by the incredibly unusual event of a January hurricane in the mid-Atlantic.

So, needless to say, I’m watching Jonas.

Nope, not running out to buy bread and milk. (Well, honestly, I did pick up milk yesterday. We ran out and I had none for my tea.) And not predicting an apocalypse. I live on Long Island, and know full well that we could survive for a few weeks with the food currently in the house. (And we have a gas stove, and still have some propane for the BBQ.) If anything, Sandy taught us that we’re a lot more resilient than we probably think. A foot, or more, of snow will simply mean that Friday night’s basketball game at school may get cancelled, and that my kids’ social calendars may take a hit. It won’t mean any snow days-- a Friday night storm is known as “wasted snow” in faculty rooms across the country. A foot or 18 inches of snow will keep most people in the house on Saturday-- by Sunday, the malls will be crowded as usual.

But I will call mom tomorrow and make sure she has milk and tea. For Christmas I got her Omaha Steaks, so I know she has food in the house. Still, I always make a point to check in on her before a storm. My siblings, particularly the one who lives closest to mom, will all do the same.

I am making a point to get my Seniors the info they need for an upcoming project. That way, if their weekend plans are cancelled and they find themselves with time to kill, they can get started if they want.

Beyond that, I’ll plan to defrost a chicken I can roast so the house smells cozy. And to pull the shovels and ice melt into the house from the garage.

We have wine and chips in the house, so we’re good to go.

S2 is in DC, so I warned him to prepare in advance of the snow. DC last had this much snow around 6 years ago when he was in college there. They didn’t have classes for almost a full week.

They’re still not sure how much we’ll get in CT, but it shouldn’t be as much as DC gets. This will be our first big snowfall so far this season. To date, we’ve had less than 2" total, if that much.

Aren’t we supposed to keep the shovel outside to keep it cold so that snow doesn’t stick to it?

“Aren’t we supposed to keep the shovel outside to keep it cold so that snow doesn’t stick to it?”

Spray it with PAM or WD40. Not that I don’t have teen aged minions to do the shoveling.

Ugh. If we get a dusting our schools are closed because some parts of our county have rural roads. Next week is exam week. IIRC some years snow has canceled exams altogether. Students with an “A” in a class can skip the exam so S16 only has one exam to take. I take it he’s managed to ace six of seven AP’s.

Forecast for Philadelphia suburbs still in flux but 6 -12 inches likely. My concern is that S is supposed to take the SAT on Saturday morning!

Geez, we moved to Maine for the snow, and it’s going to miss us again. :frowning:

Forget the TP and bread. Make sure you have eggs, flour and sugar (choc chips too). DS is supposed to go to MSMU for a scholarship test/interview on Sunday. I see that getting cancelled.

Yes, what is it with everyone’s need to make French Toast for a snowstorm? Bread, milk, eggs. We are north of NYC and watching intently as the European model forecast is now showing a stronger possibility of the heaviest snow going to the south. I do hope that Boston is spared. I think that DS2 has truly had it with the snow after last year.
On the other hand, DS3 is in charge of the bread section for a local well-known grocery store and has to keep tweaking his order until the last minute based on the forecast!

@LuckyCharms913 we’re in the same boat. D is scheduled to take the SAT in NJ and it’s looking iffy.

Snow? What’s that?

Just kidding… Good luck to all of you! Hope it’s not too bad for you.

The NWS has issued a blizzard watch for the Baltimore DC area
http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=MDZ506&warncounty=MDC027&firewxzone=MDZ506&local_place1=3%20Miles%20NE%20Clarksville%20MD&product1=Blizzard+Watch&lat=39.2337&lon=-76.9103#.Vp-wivA8KrV

We have plenty of TP and milk. I did stop this morning and buy flashlight batteries. We’re in West Virginia and worst of the snow and power outages have skipped is the last few years, so I’ve got a feeling we’re due. Also, we have a gas range that can be lit by hand in an emergency. They just announced early dismissal for our county schools. I work in state government and will have to be at work unless Gov. Tomblin shuts us down, which is highly unlikely.

Thanks for the blizzard watch link, FlyMeToTheMoon. Looks like it’s supposedly snowing in DC right now, according to my weather app. I am flying into there Thursday night, and out Friday morning (on a little RJ, so that could cancel). Then back again Sunday night and out Monday. Sounds like the worst of it for that area will be Friday afternoon-Saturday night. I suspect soon the airlines will start allowing free rescheduling for many airports.

It is not snowing in DC now.
