Here on the South Shore of Long Island, our village sent out an email last night that at 9 PM we had 24 inches on the ground but it snowed for a few more hours although not as intensely so somewhere in the 24-30 inch range. The most for any single storm at a time, a huge amount of snow. The most that I can remember was when I was newly married in 1978 and living in Brooklyn Heights. We had back to back 20 plus inch storms. No snowplows came down those streets as too narrow. When DH first parked his car it was left parked for weeks. When the snow melted it turned out he had parked at a hydrant the entire time.
As of this morning no snowplows came down younger d’s street in Greenpoint, with parking on both sides it is even challenging to sometimes just drive down this street in a car. Oh and as of this morning, landlord had not sent anyone over to shovel the steps of the building or sidewalk either.
lje, glad it wasn’t worse, but ugh, still a pain and stress to deal with.
Am glad my loved one is in London and won’t return to DC until after all the snow is gone.
^ S is in London and is sad to be missing this!
Alternate side of the street parking (for street sweeping) is cancelled in NYC for the whole week. So unless anyone needs to drive to work/school/whatever, the cars can just sit a while. In Brooklyn where I live, I was lucky enough to get a spot on the left side of the street (one-way as are most NYC streets), and the wind was kind not to have blown a mountain of snow on my car. The cars on the right side are plowed in and many of them have a mountain of wind-blown snow on top. I took a broom downstairs to try to sweep off the snow and it’s a lot heavier than it looks! But I don’t have to drive this week except to get my car inspected before Feb. 1.
I took a walk. Most of my neighbors have shoveled at least a narrow path. My landlord hired someone to do a really good job on the exterior steps and the sidewalk. Navigating the corners was difficult and many people are just walking in the street.
As for that video, it was thrilling but really terrifying too. A relatively easy way to get killed, I’d say. and of course daredevils on Youtube/Facebook don’t wear helmets. From what I could see, it looked like they went from around Madison Square Park at 23rd St. to the top of Times Square, around 48th St.
Old fort, hoping you are ok.
She hasn’t checked in this weekend.
^ D lives in Brooklyn and reports that the streets have been plowed, the sidewalks are shoveled and she plans to take her bus into Manhattan for work tomorrow AM. They had our third car up there for a few months, but left it here at Thanksgiving and are glad they did!
Boss just called. I am here until 7 tomorrow morning. Seriously considering resigning.
Meanwhile someone from my town died when snowplow plowed his car under. Someone trying to dig out his own car discovered him. He had left his car running to get warm and died from CO poisoning.
Skitching? We called it skeeching in Wisconsin.
Oh my gosh kk…boss needs to come relieve you.
KK, you should get triple pay. How awful that man died in his car.
Someone also died while being pulled behind an ATV in a sled. They were hit by someone who ran a red light.
@bookworm - thanks for asking. We got over 2 ft of snow in Manhattan. I haven’t left my apartment yet. The reason I haven’t checked in is because I watched Carol, Brooklyn, and The Room online today. They were all very good.
Trying to fly into Reagan National tomorrow. Flight not canceled so far. Metro is only running underground stations, so even if we do get to National, no idea how we get home from there. Steve Martin’s “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” comes to mind.
The NY Times posted a story about the snowboarding-through-NYC video. It includes a link to another Youtube video about how they did it.

@KKmama, very sorry to hear you need to be there until 7:00 AM tomorrow. Are you able to play cards with your client? Tell stories about the olden days? I hope she is lucid, at least, so you have some company.
How awful to hear about that man dying. Blizzards are almost a piece of cake if you just stay home, but they can be dangerous if you try to do something else.
Prayers for you KK Mama.
So horrific for the man who died.
The Jersey Shore got hit hard, it is amazing how storms seem to hit at the time of the flood high (full moon), plus with the high winds, it was a recipe for flooding. Initially they said the flooding there wasn’t that bad, but apparently areas got hit this morning with the high tide.
Where I live in northern NJ, we had about 22 inches. fortunately it was powder snow, so it wasn’t hard clearing, plus I made sure to clear the discharge pipe for my sump pump (in case this all melts rapidly), and some other things that needed clearing. I hope this is the end of the real winter weather, though I suspect we will get more of this, just hopefully not like recent winters or 95-96.
27+ inches now.
