Snow storm? Really?

We officially got 31" of snow on Saturday and beat all previous records. Yesterday was nice and sunny and the plows came through our neighborhood so everything is cleared up. Thank goodness for our garage. We have two vehicles in there but the ones on our driveway are covered up to the windows. My boss texted all of us last night to see if anyone could not get in. I think there was only one person that it was going to be a challenge for, but still doable. Our schools are closed because the district does not have a large enough truck to take the snow away so they have to get a contractor for that. They can plow it, but there’s so darn much of it that piling won’t work. They are planning to open tomorrow. This is our first snow day of the year though, so shouldn’t impact the schedule yet.

After watching a couple of cars having trouble making it around the corner of our street, I called my 10 o’clock meeting and rescheduled for this afternoon. I really hope we get a plow or at least a salt truck before then. We got one pass with a plow about half way through the storm. Our sidewalks are clear thanks to the neighbors and their snowblowers.

S2 is fortunate. His DC employer follows federal guidelines - if federal employees don’t have to report, neither do they. On Friday, they worked a half day, like federal employees. Last I heard from him, he wasn’t planning to go in today even if federal employees did (they don’t). He can work from home, if necessary.

He lives in a part of DC only serviced by buses, which will only be running for 5 hours today anyway. Not sure how easily he can even walk to the bus stop since his street hasn’t been cleared yet.

I’m in NYC - our building’s walkways and sidewalks were cleared beautifully, but when I attempted to walk to church yesterday it was a different story. Lots of sidewalks were not yet cleared, and some of the intersections were a challenge to cross! Fortunately we don’t have to dig out a car. I work from home when I’m not traveling, and am not scheduled to travel until next week.

We live on a cut-through street, near a busier road that brings people downtown. That one gets attention. It’s not unusual for us to go days before a snowplow works our street. And if the snow was heavy, the mounding at the end of the drive can be huge. I absolutely get that, no matter how clear main roads are, some residential streets will be a bigger challenge.

Daughter lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan; said that getting to work today was no problem. “Underground infrastructure helps a lot,” she said. Ah, these urbanites

Streets on my block are cleared, but streets just a couple of blocks away are still quite iffy.

Not too surprised schools in my area are closed today as a result…

I just posted this on another thread, but for those who were stranded while trying to fly by the storm (or any serious delay), many credit cards offer travel reimbursement costs that are quite significant. Worth looking into, if you have paid extra money for getting stuck out:

FREE AT LAST!!!

And good thing I am a professional because the church isn’t plowed yet and I have a funeral tomorrow morning. Who needs a stinking prayer book? Not me.

^ Oh no, KKmama. From the caregiver situation to a funeral? We need to pray for you.

DD college opened last Tuesday. Thursday they opened at 10:30am and Friday, and Monday they were closed. Now she tells me they are closed tomorrow. (Tuesday) as well. I don’t know how they are going to make up the classes.

They probably won’t. This is not a public K-12 school where you have to have a certain number of class days.

I hear you raclut ! We are dealing with the same thing…ours was supposed to start classes today , but they delayed move-in to this Wednesday

^Right. Colleges I taught at lost a week because of Sandy. We found ways to get the work done.

Tomorrow I am going to say a prayer and attempt to drive to the nearest grocery store.

Making up classes in undergrad missed due to snow or other weather issues is arguably much easier to do if the missed days are at the beginning of the term rather than at the middle or the end.

Cobrat…are you saying you know of undergrad schools that make up snow days? Do tell??

Just things YOU know of first hand…no cousin or friend of friend stories.

I’m and atheist and even I’m praying for @KKmama!

@thumper1 -trust me, not sticking up for anyone else here ;), but I do remember that when Swarthmore was closed for a day because of treacherous snow conditions, DS told me that his 3 hour seminar, which met once a week, was rescheduled for a time when all the students were available. That sort of thing, otherwise they would have missed the equivalent of a week’s worth of classes.

Some Profs would make it up by combine it with the material to be covered that day, other Profs would put the onus on students to cover that material chapter themselves with the option to clarify points during expanded office hours/trips to Prof’s house, some others will hold makeup session during a scheduled time when all students can show up or individually during expanded office hours, and a few Profs won’t make up the class formally or in expanded office hours…but still hold students responsible for it*.

  • Probably worked much better in LACs like the one I attended or LAC-like universities. IME..was a good preparation for the independent study courses I took later in my undergrad career.

** Works better for some classes/students than for others. Not the most optimal option IMO.
